Palmer Report: Someone is rope-a-doping Donald Trump with the Paul Manafort wiretap story

We’ve seen it before in this investigation. Someone leaked the details of Donald Trump Jr’s Russia meeting one day at a time, in progressively more damning fashion, so that he would foolishly issue partial denials each day that would subsequently be exposed as lies the following day. It tripped him up far worse than if the entire story had simply been leaked at once. Now we’re seeing someone rope-a-dope his father Donald Trump in similar fashion.

On Monday evening, it was revealed that Paul Manafort had been under secret FISA wiretap surveillance both during and after the election. Notably, no details were included as to what had been caught on that wiretap. By Tuesday, more details were leaked including the fact that Manafort had been caught communicating about the Trump campaign with the Russians. By Wednesday, those details became darker, as it was revealed that Manafort had offered to give a Kremlin oligarch regular briefings about the campaign. There’s a reason it’s playing out this way.

Even though these leaks are being given to different major news outlets, their nature strongly suggests that they’re all coming from the same place. That source could have leaked all of this at once. But by stretching it out this way, it gives Donald Trump the opportunity to foolishly step in it by issuing some kind of partial denial. Thus far he hasn’t done so, but his nature is to lash out. So if not today, then tomorrow or the next day, Trump will angrily tweet that Manafort did this all on his own.

That’s when this same source will leak the part that begins to incriminate Donald Trump himself. That’ll come in the form of intercepted phone calls in which Manafort briefed Trump about his plan to collude with Russia, or something along those lines. We know that part happened. Manafort wouldn’t have made such a major decision without running it past Trump. The source whoever is leaking this is just waiting for Trump to step in it before dropping the hammer.

Donald Trump | The Guardian: Mueller’s Russia team reportedly seeks White House records on Trump actions

Investigation appears to enter new phase amid reports of request for documents related to Trumps most controversial actions since taking office

Special counsel Robert Mueller has asked the White House to provide documents related to Donald Trumps most controversial actions since taking office in January, according to two reports on Wednesday.

The inquiry from Muellers team, who is leading the investigation into whether Trump associates coordinated with Russia to influence the 2016 presidential election, suggests that the investigation is moving into a new phase inching closer to the president.

 • “We don’t know what these Facebook ads looked like, we don’t know who they were targeting, and we don’t know how many millions of Americans may have been exposed to them.”

(From: Putin’s Pro-Trump Operation May Have Been Far Bigger Than We Yet Know – Did the Kremlin help make Trump the “first Facebook president”? – by BILL BUZENBERG – SEP 20, 2017)

And we have to know the answers to these and many other questions.

If it is convincingly demonstrated that the extent of this problem is significant enough to affect the outcome of the elections (and that’s how it looks in key, “swing” states now), and the hostile foreign power was behind it, then the legitimacy of elections should and will be questioned and legally challenged, which may lead to their annulment and the new substitute elections.

If “Russia used Facebook to organize racist rallies to help Trump”, why can’t we venture a mental step further and assume that the increase in the incidents of mass shootings, aggression against the police, incidents with the racial overtones, transportation accidents, all of which demonstrate the clear statistical “pre-election bumps” (hikes, increases), in 2008, and in 2012, and in 2016, were inspired, and/or conducted by the same actors, and with the same goal: to “elect” their candidate, which in 2016 apparently was Trump. Did we look into it?

The answer, (that all these listed phenomena are the hypothetical parts of the operational whole) is clear to me, on the basis of the daily monitoring of the press reports on these subject in 2015 and 2016. Compile and analyze the statistics, and I think, you might get the same or the very similar impression. See also posts on this subject in my blogs. It is interesting to note, that this opinion, regarding the presence of the signs of the foreign interference in the elections prior to 2016, (although not necessarily with the same range of agreed upon details and analysis, and independently arrived at), coincides completely with the one of Mike Pompeo who surely is very well informed on this subject. CIA Director Mike Pompeo: ‘Of course’ Russia interfered in the 2016 election, ‘and the one before that… I am confident that the Russians meddled in this election, as is the entire intelligence community,” Pompeo said, appearing agitated at the skepticism towards his previous answer. “I hope I didn’t stop at 2008 [for when he says Russian began interfering in U.S. elections]. You can go back to the 70s. My point was simply this: This threat is real. The U.S. government, including the Central Intelligence Agency, has to figure out a way to fight back against it and defeat it. And we’re intent upon doing that.”

There must be a much broader group of people who share more or less the same impressions and the same opinion: the foreign interference in the US elections is a long-standing phenomenon, and especially malignant from 1950-s, on a post-WW2 wave.

What we need now, is not just the impressions and opinions, but more or less definitive studies, including the high-quality statistical ones, on this very important and forward-looking subject, and also, of course, the strategic thinking and the strategic planning.

These issues, described above, might not be under the direct purview of Mr. Mueller’s Investigation. Clearly, they are enormously important, and we also have to consider our common, human, and understandable reluctance to look into this moral and the political abyss.

However, we have to do this: to investigate these hypothetical connections with the utmost thoroughness and depth, the wellbeing of this nation depends on it. I think, in my, as always, very humble and the non-specialist opinion, that the DOJ and the FBI have to either establish a separate investigation into these matters or to broaden the scope and the mandate of Mr. Mueller’s investigation.

This article below, which just came to light, about the very unusual FBI’s severe underreporting of their informants’ “Otherwise Illegal Activity” in the election year of 2016, might or might not have something to do with this. I think, that most likely it does.

The whole issue of the FBI recordkeeping, statistical and other reports, and other aspects of the paperwork comes into focus: they simply do not always and necessarily keep the records: it is so much easier and so convenient for them: no accountability, no outsider will be able to learn about their crimes.

This has to end.

Investigate the Investigators! Save America! Reform the FBI!

Presently I see two aspects in the specifics of Trump’s campaign use of social media:

1) use of business principles of marketing, “political marketing”, or marketing of “Trump for President” as business product, and

2) possible use of the “psychotronic weapons” techniques (in targeted advertising for voters), which might be rooted in the concepts and practices of the Soviet, and later Russian Military Intelligence.

Both aspects deserve further attention and elaboration.

The old adage may apply to the elections process: “People choose to hear what they want to hear.” Voters make their decisions on the basis of identification with the parties, cause or leaders.

For example, the so-called “Voters of moderate expectations” are not emotional but rational choosers. They “shop” for their parties and candidates: “They do their homework, put things to the reasonableness test, and decide who will get their votes.”

“Trump supporters are of two principal types: right wing populists and Republican diehards. The right wing populist types can be characterized as “low information voters.” In other words, it is their (political) ignorance that is been exploited.

Trump channeled their anger and gave it his voice. He was thinking thoughts and saying things that they wanted to say in the way that they wanted them said. In other words, they are a flock of sheep, who are not able to but want to be the rebels -wolves, they identify with the aggressive leader as their ideal, embodying the traits that they lack. It reminds the histories of the fanatical adoration of “Fuhrer” or Stalin’s “personality cult”. “Voters who still score high on authority/loyalty/sanctity and low on care… are significantly more likely to vote for Donald Trump. These are the true authoritarians…”

To summarize and put these statistics in a simple form: Trump supporters are more of the racists.
“The supporters labeled “Republican diehards” fall into the High Anxiety category. When asked how they can do a complete turnabout and support Donald Trump rather than their earlier and much more preferred choices, their usual retort is, “Anyone but Hillary.” This is because they viewed her as a part and extension of the Obama administration, which they blamed for all their (personal and other) problems and troubles, fairly and justifiably, or, much more likely – not. This is the psychosocial mechanism of “scapegoating”.

Apparently, “political psychographics” were adopted from the economic ones – from the market research. This circumstance might be an illustration of how Trump views his voters and his electorate: simply as the political market which has to be penetrated and conquered. This is a business approach to politics: the voters are simply the consumers who have to be persuaded and manipulated into buying this product, which is “Trump for President”.

Trump wanted to sell this product the same way he sells his real estate and his own TV personality. He wanted to learn about the ways to market this product the same way any other market is researched and studied. He views himself as a business product. The flip side of this coin is that he views other people in his personal and political life as the products too: they can be bought and manipulated. His is a cold and lonely world, indeed.

Trumpism is the apex of the business mentality and business power in America. He views America as his next business venture and intends to manage it accordingly: as the USA, Inc.
The soul is gone. The truth is gone. The humanity is gone. The essence of our nature is gone. The economic “consumer society” will accomplish its historical “merger and acquisition”, conquer everything and everyone else and will be transformed into the totalitarian political “consumer society”.

With all this, I do not intend to demonize Trump personally at all. He does have a considerable personal charm and even has what looks like sincerity, and even comes across as a rebellious and vulnerable child. In his seventies – analyze ZIS! But aren’t we all, and at any age? Our “inner child” never disappears and never grows up, it is our ontogenetic core.

Is Trump just a product of his (ruthless? soulless? mechanistic? primitively arithmetically calculating? and still ultimately enigmatic? and psychologically and sociologically misunderstood? and understudied?), the so-called “business world”, which can be viewed as the childishly predatory by its very nature?

The Information War “declared” against the U.S. in 2016, would be impossible without its “cyber” aspect. Based on the events of the past year, for all practical intents and purposes, it should be assumed, that all world, and first of all, the U.S. digital records are properly and completely penetrated and appropriated (accessed and stolen, to put it simply) by the hostile actors. Some of this data is combined with the data from the human sources into an integrated database. This might be a decisive factor in voters and elections manipulations: influence on candidate preferences and individual tailoring of the advertising on the social media. All, without exceptions, social media outlets, not just Facebook, should be examined for these operations.

Most likely, all these aspects and facets, and the others, still hidden, are the parts of the single, concerted and well-coordinated effort and intelligence operation.

M.N.: Presently I see two aspects in the specifics of Trump’s campaign use of social media:

1) use of business principles of marketing, “political marketing”, as outlined in the draft below of 10.31.16, and

2) possible use of the “psychotronic weapons” techniques (in targeted advertising), which might be rooted in the concepts and practices of the Soviet, and later Russian Military Intelligence.

Both aspects deserve further attention and elaboration.

Also, and maybe, more importantly, we have to keep in mind, based on the events of the past year, that for all practical intents and purposes, it should be assumed, that all world, and first of all, the U.S. digital records are properly and completely penetrated and appropriated by the hostile actors. Some of this data is combined with the data from the human sources into an integrated database. “Trump for President” as a business product and the new “Psychographic Weapon”

Big Brother Trump – GS

Psychographics vs Demographics in analysis of voting behavior – GS

“Trump for President” as business product – GS

Politics – WP – 10.27.16: Trump’s plan for a comeback includes building a ‘psychographic’ profile of every voter

“…a company being paid millions of dollars [! – M.N.] by Donald Trump’s presidential campaign says it has developed a political weapon powerful enough to help the Republican nominee overcome his troubles and win the White House.

The key is a psychological model for identifying voters that can “determine the personality of every single adult in the United States of America,” said Alexander Nix, chief executive of Cambridge Analytica

The psychological tests are combined with the collection of data, such as a person’s taste in movies, music, books and restaurants and the “likes” or “hearts” on social-media sites. All of that information is added to a spreadsheet that contains the name of every voter. Thus, the company’s files reveal a person’s gender, race, location, car type, club memberships, and reading and viewing habits, along with potentially thousands of other pieces of information. Such data is compiled by many companies and used by most campaigns. In its marketing materials, Cambridge Analytica says that “we collect up to 5,000 data points on over 220 million Americans,” enabling it to target groups “and predict the behavior of like-minded people.” The company says it has not only the usual stable of data experts but also psychologists who analyze the data and assemble pools of like-minded people.

Nix dismissed critics who questioned the company’s claims of predicting voter behavior. It is “intuitive” that the more such data is collected, the better his company can be in predicting how people will vote, Nix said.
“If I was to tell you that an individual had voted for a particular party over the last 40 years the same way, you would conclude that is a fairly good indicator,” Nix said. “Now imagine if we could overlay thousands of data points that are predictable about behavior. Of course it works. A much better observation is, how well does it work?””

Understanding psychographics trumps demographics.

…Voters can be classified into three broad psychographic categories: High anxiety, low information and moderate expectations.

Low information voters are of two types. On the one hand, they are many of the high anxiety voters who only consume intake from a single source — think Fox or MSNBC depending on one’s political predisposition.

M.N.: The old and not very well tested adage: “People choose to hear what they want to hear.”

On the other hand, they are more disinterested voters who use a party label, a candidate’s race, religion or some other characteristic, or a wedge issue(s) to make their voting decision.

M.N.: Voters make their decisions on the basis of identification with the parties, cause or leaders.

Voters of moderate expectations… [M.N.: are not the emotional, like the above group, but rational choosers. They “shop” for their parties and candidates]:
They do their homework, put things to the reasonableness test, and decide who will get their votes.

Trump supporters are of two principal types: right wing populists and Republican diehards.
The right wing populist types can be characterized as low information voters.

M.N.: In other words, it is their (political) ignorance that is been exploited.

Trump’s appeal for them has been driven largely by his “outsider” status, railing at the Republican political elite and party leadership that has not treated its “working class” members properly; and, speaking out loudly on wedge or hot button issues of importance to them such as illegal immigration or terrorism.
Trump channeled their anger and gave it his voice. He was thinking thoughts and saying things that they wanted to say in the way that they wanted them said.

M.N.: In other words, they are a flock of sheep, who are not able to, but want to be the rebels -wolves, they identify with the aggressive leader as their ideal, embodying the traits that they lack. It reminds the histories of the fanatical adoration of “fuhrer” or Stalin’s “personality cult”.

Voters who still score high on authority/loyalty/sanctity and low on care… are significantly more likely to vote for Donald Trump. These are the true authoritarians…”

 • The 2015 American Values Survey done by the Public Religion Research Institute showed that “Roughly three quarters (74 percent) of Trump supporters — compared to 57 percent of supporters of all other Republican candidates agree that today, discrimination against whites has become as big a problem as discrimination against blacks and other minorities.”
 • Michael Tesler, an associate professor of political science at the University of California in Irvine, after analyzing data from different sources, concludes, “Republicans who scored highest on racial resentment were about 30 percentage points more likely to support Trump than their more moderate counterparts.”
 • According to a Reuters/Ipsos opinion poll of 16,000 Americans conducted between March and June 2016, “Supporters of U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump are more likely to describe African Americans as ‘criminal,’ ‘unintelligent,’ ‘lazy,’ and ‘violent’ than voters who backed some Republican rivals in the primaries or who support Democratic contender Hillary Clinton…”
M.N.: To summarize and put these statistics in a simple form: Trump supporters are more of the racists.
These supporters whom we have labeled Republican diehards fall into the High Anxiety category. When asked how they can do a complete turnabout and support Donald Trump rather than their earlier and much more preferred choices, their usual retort is, “Anyone but Hillary.”

M.N.: Because they view her as a part and extension of the Obama administration, which they blame for all their (personal and other) problems and troubles, fairly and justifiably, or, much more likely – not. This is the psychosocial mechanism of “scapegoating”.

M.N.: Apparently, political psychographics were adopted from the economic ones – from the market research. This circumstance might be an illustration of how Trump views his voters and his electorate: simply as the political market which has to be penetrated and conquered. This is a business approach to politics: the voters are simply the consumers who have to be persuaded and manipulated into buying his product, which is “Trump for President”.

He is just a product of his (ruthless? soulless? mechanistic? primitively arithmetically calculating? and ?still ultimately enigmatic and psychologically and sociologically understudied), the so called “business world”, which can be viewed as the childishly predatory by its very nature.

What do I see as Donald’s real and relevant problems? I call him “Donald” because I feel I can relate to him, despite the unbridgeable chasm of irreconcilable disagreements and “gut feeling” non-acceptance, strong rejection of his style, personality and the very idea of him as a potential President.

It is interesting to observe how Hillary relates to him: like a strong, maybe even stern but understanding mother to a petulant misbehaving child, like a school principal to a very problematic pupil, whom she sees through quite nicely, interacts with him somewhat ironically but not condescendingly, directly and frankly, but not hurtfully or sadistically, in one word, maturely, almost “tough-lovingly” and humanely.

I’ll say it very humbly, what I see as his main problems, from which many other, the secondary ones, stem out: his superficiality, his lack of intellect and intellectualism, lack of depth (although, he undoubtedly is a very intelligent and experienced man), lack of humanity, lack of political maturity, etc., etc. – the list might take three pages, and there is no need to mention all of this: the whole picture seems to be clear. The Democrats, in comparison, seem to have these and other relevant qualities almost in abundance.

Both D. Brooks and E.J. Dionne, in the interview with the NPR on 10.28.16, said that the reopening of the FBI emails investigation is not going to hurt Mrs. Clinton. I think that many observers would agree with him: reviving the old non-issue will not make it less of a non-issue. If anything, it might contribute to the voters’ feelings of puzzlement, disbelief, anger and protest and might mobilize them further. Hopefully. Will a shocking, jaw dropping “bombshell“, implying the primitive, irrational, archaic, witch-hunting “guilt by association” prove to be an empty shell? “Thousands of classified emails” sent by Abedin to Weiner? What? For what?
Another Russian set-up? Another same old, same old of the FBI’s same old Clintons-haters? In this situation, the only appropriate way to deal with it is to do what Hillary requested: “Put it on a table!”

Speaking of the racial and economic issues, which fuel the Trumpistas’ resentments and rage: are they the signs of some historically inevitable (in a long run, despite the hypothetically possible but temporary deviations from this course) process of Transformation of America, not in a narrow Obama Presidency related definition (it is seen as the one which champions, promotes and hastens these changes), but in a much broader one? Do we really understand this process sufficiently? Do we understand how to deal with it efficiently? Where will it lead? The effects of changing demography are the very powerful determining factors, which will affect the social structure and order, the economics, and the all important culture, in a broad sense, as well as the country’s standing in the world and its foreign relations.
Maybe I did not search well enough, but so far I was not able to find any coherent and deep analysis of these issues and any credible and convincing predictions and prognostications. It looks that we are avoiding thinking about it, researching and studying these issues, and discussing them in academia and the media because these issues might feel very uncomfortable and “divisive”. There are no reasons to keep avoiding thinking and talking about them, no reasons to hide our heads in the sand. “Political correctness” is a tool of conformity, which might be good as a “cohesion”, but is not so good as an instrument of understanding and change.
Healthy, inevitable, wise, fair, in the true American spirit, racial, economic, political, cultural Integration is the only solution, it became the ideological banner of the political class. The question is, are any adjustments and corrections needed in this course, not taking this process back, but enhancing and rationalizing it, making it more efficient, fair, viable and secure for the society as a whole, which will make it stronger domestically and abroad.

That leaves voters of Moderate Expectations. Could there be likely Trump supporters among them? No doubt there will be a few but very few. Or, as the Donald might put it very, very, very few.
That’s because, given the operational definition of the folks in this category, they fall outside the zone of influence for Trump’s hyperbole and histrionics. They tend to be independent in orientation rather than tied to a party.

M.N.: The “rationalists”, as should be expected, reject Trump: he does not appeal to logic and rational choice, he is not on their “best picks” rating list.
The “undecided” or “floating voters” portion is about 5-13%, and “their minds and psychographic profile does not match that of the Trump supporter.”

Putin’s Pro-Trump Operation May Have Been Far Bigger Than We Yet Know
Did the Kremlin help make Trump the “first Facebook president”?
BILL BUZENBERGSEP. 20, 2017 6:00 AM

M.N.: And we have to know the answers to these and many other questions.

Putin’s Pro-Trump Operation May Have Been Far Bigger Than We Yet Know – Mother Jones

There must be a much broader group of people who share more or less the same impressions and the same opinion: the foreign interference in the US elections is a long standing phenomenon, and especially malignant from 1950-s, on a post-WW2 wave.

What we need now, is not just the impressions and opinions, but more or less definitive studies, including the high-quality statistical ones, on this very important and forward looking subject, and also, of course, the strategic thinking and the strategic planning.

Michael Novakhov

9.20.17 – M.N.:

Anatomy of a Russian attack: From robocalls to hoaxes, a look at tactics used

About this series: The U.S. intelligence community has concluded an attempt to interfere in the 2016 presidential election was ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin. A WTOP investigation that began in November 2016 examined how the attack happened, when it started, who was involved and what’s next. Dozens of interviews with current and former U.S. intelligence officials, members of Congress, cyber security and intelligence experts, foreign government officials, Russian nationals and American victims were conducted. Here is what WTOP learned.

WASHINGTON — In the early hours of Feb. 13, 2017, just after returning home from a trip to Africa earlier in the month, David Pollock woke up to the incessant ringing of his mobile phone.

He answered it. On the other end was someone speaking in Russian, who abruptly hung up.

“It started probably about 7 a.m. and continued many hours after that. I was getting robocalls from Russia in Russian,” he said.

Some of the relentless callers “left messages. Sometimes, they hung up, and sometimes, there was just noise after I answered,” said Pollock, the Kaufman fellow at The Washington Institute. He said that for nearly an entire working day, “the calls were coming in so fast; I couldn’t block them or delete them until many hours went by.”

Pollock believes he was targeted after publicly confronting a Russian academic, who denigrated the U.S. military and the U.S. government during a plenary session at a security conference in Morocco a few days before.

But as annoying as it was, what happened to Pollock was tame compared to the scene that unfolded in St. Mary Parish, Louisiana, on the morning of Sept. 11, 2014.

‘A certain mission’

“We started getting phone calls in regards to a message titled ‘toxic fumes, hazard warning,’” said Duval Arthur, director of the office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness.

He told WTOP that citizens received a text message alert about 8 a.m. about an explosion at a manufacturing plant. The alert read “‘take shelter, check local media,’” according to Arthur; the dispatch was sent from Columbia Chemical Company and listed its website as columbiachemical.com.

Within two hours, social media users from the Gulf of Mexico to the Great Lakes were inundated with posts about the incident.

Twitter and other social media platforms were jammed with images of the explosion and a screenshot of a CNN homepage. Even a YouTube video had been posted showing someone watching a TV broadcast in which ISIS had allegedly claimed responsibility for an attack on the plant.

But not a word of it was true. It was all an elaborately staged hoax.

The organization mentioned in the alert, Columbia Chemical Company, does not exist.

There is a company in the area called Columbian Chemical, owned by Birla.

Arthur told WTOP he called the company, and they said the following in a news release:

“We have been informed by the community that a text message has been received by several individuals indicating a release of toxic gas from the Birla Carbon’s Columbian Chemicals Plant near Centerville, Louisiana. The content as stated by the text message is not true. There has been no release of such toxic gas, explosion or any other incident in our facility. We are not aware of the origin of this text message.”

When WTOP asked who was responsible, Arthur said, “I was told it was the Russians, but I have no information on that — none whatsoever.”

WTOP contacted the Louisiana division of the FBI and asked about the investigation. A spokesman declined to comment on the disposition and nature of the inquiry.

Arthur is uncertain about who was behind the incident, but current and former U.S. intelligence sources are clear that it and other incidents like it are the work of a Russian government-funded network.

Both Pollock and St. Mary Parish, Louisiana, were likely victims of a troll house operation.

“These folks have a certain mission. They go 24 hours a day in 12-hour shifts. In those shifts, they are given a certain number of posts that they have to fulfill,” said former Congressman Michael J. Rogers, R-Mich.

Rogers, who chaired the House Intelligence Committee from 2011-2015, told WTOP hundreds of workers at the troll houses are assigned to target websites, social media accounts and online platforms, “which have some impact on people’s opinion on either a person or some idea or a political candidate,” that is important to the Russian government.

He said each troll, “based on the information I saw, is assigned about 135 online posts (or targets).”

In each post, according to Rogers, the troll is required to include a minimum number of characters — “something like 200,” said Rogers.

Whether it’s robocalling people perceived as hostile to the Russian government or launching intricately scripted hoaxes, it’s all believed to be a part of the Russian military’s new information warfare division — designed specifically to fight the U.S. and the West.

“They took all of their cyber-actors and combined them in this information warfare center. They talked openly about propaganda being a part of what they do. They said they were going to be smart and effective in everything they do to protect the Russian federation,” Rogers said.

Russia’s influence operations

Moscow’s new hybrid warfare machine was on full display last year.

“What we have seen in the 2016 election was an unprecedented attempt by Russia to manipulate our most basic democratic process: our electoral process and the jewel of the crown, the presidential process,” Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., vice chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said in an exclusive interview with WTOP.

The operation was based on an old idea.

“Russia, a long time back in time inside the Soviet Union, was an agent of misinformation. When it was a communist dictatorship, it used propaganda to contain its own people,” Warner said.

Many of the tactics that Russia deployed in 2016 against the U.S., he said, “They’ve been using for the last decade in places like Poland, Hungary, Romania and, of course, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.”

A U.S. intelligence official told WTOP, “Russia relies on tools it uses in its influence campaigns, such as media messaging and funding of parties, to muddy the waters about Russian activities and bolster its preferred candidates.”

Russia “probably is also increasingly using cyber-enabled disclosures to undermine the credibility of Western institutions,” said the official, looking at how Moscow skillfully hacked the Democratic National Committee and John Podesta, former chairman of Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign.

After both entities were hacked, sources told WTOP, the information was then funneled to organizations such as WikiLeaks and DCleaks.

Warner said, “Russia started by hacking into private individual accounts of both political parties, but decided to only release information that was harmful to the Democratic candidate — Clinton.”

Somewhere mid-spring to summer of 2016, according to Warner, “Moscow changed from saying they just wanted to sow chaos to deciding they’d rather see Trump over Clinton.”

There were two phases of the operation, he said.

The first was the selective hacking of information and then letting that information be released at critical times. The second part, which Warner said “was even more sophisticated, was using modern technology and the internet, and they would pay people to create fake social media accounts and create botnets.”

He said they would use those accounts and bots to flood the internet with fake news. And, according to Warner, they were so skilled at it that they could even target specific areas.

“Data scientists have shown that in certain areas, for example in Wisconsin, Michigan or Pennsylvania, during the last 10 days of the campaign, Twitter or Facebook users wouldn’t find stories about Clinton vs. Trump,” Warner said.

Instead, he said, they would encounter fake stories “about Hillary Clinton being sick or stealing money from the State Department.”

The reason, he said, was because the overwhelming number of bots and fake social media accounts — a part of Russia’s information warfare operation — could determine what the top trending stories would be on social media platforms.

Editor’s noteWTOP’s next article looks at the evolution of Russian influence operations in the U.S.

It’s been nearly a year since the US intelligence community publicly announced its determination that the Russian government took covert actions to sway the 2016 US election. We now know that Russia did so in part by buying Facebook ads and weaponizing bots, trolls, and other social media tools created by US tech giants. But there is still much that eludes the public about these attacks, as New York Times media columnist Jim Rutenberg pointed out on Monday:

We don’t know what these Facebook ads looked like, we don’t know who they were targeting, and we don’t know how many millions of Americans may have been exposed to them.

As the Washington Post reported, congressional investigators “have grown increasingly concerned that Facebook is withholding key information that could illuminate the shape and extent of a Russian propaganda campaign.”

We do know an elaborate plan for influencing the election reportedly was drawn up in 2016 by the Russian Institute for Strategic Studies, a think tank controlled by the Kremlin, according to reporting by Reuters. One document “recommended the Kremlin launch a propaganda campaign on social media and Russian state-backed global news outlets to encourage U.S. voters to elect a president who would take a softer line toward Russia than the administration of then-President Barack Obama,” according to seven US officials cited.

Another document that came from that Russian think tank last October, according to Reuters, “warned that Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton was likely to win the election. For that reason, it argued, it was better for Russia to end its pro-Trump propaganda and instead intensify its messaging about voter fraud to undermine the U.S. electoral system’s legitimacy and damage Clinton’s reputation in an effort to undermine her presidency.”

There are at least four ways the Russians followed that blueprint for a broad attack that only now is beginning to come into greater focus for the American public.

As reported earlier this month in The New York Times, Facebook has disclosed that “a shadowy Russian company linked to the Kremlin” bought some 3,000 ads, using 470 fake accounts, at a cost of more than $100,000. Facebook said it has shut down the fake accounts and acknowledged that these were “divisive ads on hot-button [social] issues” such as race, gay rights, gun control and immigration, according to a post on Facebook by Alex Stamos, the company’s chief security officer. The ads ran from June 2015 until May 2017 and echoed themes favorable to presidential candidate Donald Trump.

Throughout the election season, false and misleading articles were posted on Russian media sites and amplified through social media in an effort that former FBI agent Clint Watts has described as an updated form of the classic Soviet “active measures” technique to plant false information and undermine democracy. As Mother Jones has previously reported, Trump and his associates at times during the campaign picked up these false news stories and quoted them.

As Watts described to congressional investigators, the Kremlin used armies of Twitter bots to spread fake news using sock-puppet accounts that appeared to be individuals such as swing-voter Republicans in the heartland. The idea, Watts said, was for Americans to “see somebody and they look exactly like you, even down to the pictures.”

“Russia’s increasingly sophisticated propaganda machinery,” as The Washington Post reported, “including thousands of botnets, teams of paid human ‘trolls,’ and networks of websites and social-media accounts — echoed and amplified right-wing sites across the Internet as they portrayed Clinton as a criminal hiding potentially fatal health problems and preparing to hand control of the nation to a shadowy cabal of global financiers. The effort also sought to heighten the appearance of international tensions and promote fear of looming hostilities with nuclear-armed Russia.”

Senate intelligence committee leaders have received reports, according to the Huffington Post, that Russia hired at least 1,000 trolls to spread fake news stories to hurt Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton during the presidential election. According to Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.), these efforts apparently focused on “swing states in an attempt to influence votes there—Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania—where people were reading during the waning days of the election that ‘Clinton is sick,’ or ‘Clinton is taking money from whoever for some source’…fake news.’”

The margin of victory for Trump in all three states combined was fewer than 80,000 votes.

Watts and other national security experts created the Hamilton 68 dashboard this summer to track Russia-linked influence networks that continue to operate on Twitter.

The Daily Beast has reported “that Russian operatives hiding behind false identities used Facebook’s event-management tool to remotely organize and promote political protests in the U.S., including an August 2016 anti-immigrant, anti-Muslim rally in Idaho.” A Facebook spokesperson confirmed to The Daily Beast recently that several events were shut down and had been promoted with paid ads.

The Daily Beast added that these “Facebook events—one of which echoed Islamophobic conspiracy theories pushed by pro-Trump media outlets—are the first indication that the Kremlin’s attempts to shape America’s political discourse moved beyond fake news and led unwitting Americans into specific real-life action.”

While Facebook hasn’t publicized many specifics about the Russian political ad efforts, The Wall Street Journal reports that special counsel Robert Mueller has copies of the ads, information about the accounts that purchased them, as well as about the targeting criteria they used.

Meanwhile, the Trump campaign was known for its extensive use of Facebook in 2016—both for its use of the social network’s marketing tools and for its partnership with Cambridge Analytica, a firm controlled by major Trump donor Robert Mercer that specializes in “psychological” data mining from Facebook.

It remains unclear whether the Trump campaign efforts had any connection with the Russian efforts. But in reviewing how social media figured into the 2016 campaign in general, a recent piece in the New York Review of Books argued persuasively that, “Donald Trump is our first Facebook president.”

Confirmed: Paul Manafort caught on wiretap colluding with Russia on Donald Trump’s behalf during election

Monday was an almost incalculably bad day for Paul Manafort, who was confirmed to have been under secret wiretap before and after the election, and is about to be indicted. But Tuesday has turned out to be an arguably even worse day for Manafort, based on what’s subsequently been revealed about that wiretap. It’s also just about the worst news possible for Donald Trump.

The latest revelation comes by way of CBS News, which is now confirming that Paul Manafort discussed the Donald Trump campaign with the Russians during the election (link). It’s still not being reported what Manafort and Russia specifically said to each other. But this amounts to collusion one way or the other. As has been pointed out by various legal experts, “collusion” is not a legal term; it simply means two parties are working together for nefarious purposes. But Special Counsel Robert Mueller already has the tapes of the Manafort-Russia conversations, so he knows precisely what was said. He also presumably knows what Manafort subsequently said to Trump about those conversations.

That’s where the problem comes in for Donald Trump. His own campaign chairman has now been caught colluding with the Russians about the election, on behalf of the campaign, during the election. On some level the burden will now fall on Trump to demonstrate that he somehow didn’t know his own campaign chair was taking these actions. If it turns out Trump did know, he’s on the hook legally for whatever it is that Manafort and Russia were specifically plotting.

There is also the matter of the court of public opinion. If Donald Trump can’t convince the general public that he didn’t know Paul Manafort was colluding with the Russians on behalf of the campaign, he’ll be presumed guilty by the American people. In the end, the damage to his approval rating may determine the swiftness of his ouster.

The post Confirmed: Paul Manafort caught on wiretap colluding with Russia on Donald Trump’s behalf during election appeared first on Palmer Report.

Donald Trump | The Guardian: Is Trump about to repeat George W Bush’s worst mistake? | Michael Fuchs

In 2002, Bush used his UN speech to argue for action against Iraq. Lets hope Trumps first UN speech isnt the opening salvo in a preventable war with Iran

In 2003, the United States initiated perhaps the greatest strategic disaster in US history by diverting attention from a necessary war in Afghanistan to an unnecessary war in Iraq. The Iraq war resulted in hundreds of thousands dead and wounded, untold economic catastrophe, states in the Middle East in complete ruin, and the rise of Isis all while the effort to go after terrorists in Afghanistan languished.

President Donald Trumps first speech before the United Nations General Assembly this week made clear that Trump wants to take America down a similar path by diverting much-needed attention from North Korea to starting an unnecessary conflict with Iran.

Confirmed: Paul Manafort caught on wiretap colluding with Russia on Donald Trumps behalf during election

Trump attorney Michael Cohen has officially pissed off the Senate, and now theyre coming for him

As Donald Trump’s Russia scandal has gradually enveloped his staff, his associates, and even his family, one of the key questions has been who will flip on him in exchange for leniency, who will purposely decide to spitefully go down in flames, and who will dumbly get tripped up and be left with no choice but to flip. Based on what we just witnessed, it appears longtime Trump attorney Michael Cohen is now facing Choice B or Choice C.

Cohen agreed to voluntarily testify about his role in the Trump-Russia scandal for the Senate Intelligence Committee, with the stipulation that it be in private. The Senate agreed, because it was easier than dragging him through the subpoena process, but on the condition that Cohen not speak publicly about his testimony. The trouble: just before Cohen’s scheduled testimony on Tuesday morning, after he was already in the building, he released a last minute statement to the media. In return, the Senate dropped the hammer on him.

The Senate Intel Committee decided to immediately send Cohen home without testifying, and announced that it will now only allow him to testify in public (link). It also announced that it’s subpoenaing him to force him to come back and testify in public (link). This isn’t merely an attempt at punishing Cohen by making him dodge questions on live national television. It’s all about who else will be watching that testimony.

Some Trump-Russia figures have only agreed to testify before Congress privately, because they don’t want Special Counsel Robert Mueller having access to it. He’ll subpoena them to come in and answer his own questions when he’s ready to. But in the mean time, because Michael Cohen just screwed up and gave the Senate an opening to force him to testify publicly, it means Mueller will be watching that day. If Cohen screws up and gives anything away, it’ll put Mueller that much further ahead in the game.

The post Trump attorney Michael Cohen has officially pissed off the Senate, and now they’re coming for him appeared first on Palmer Report.

Reports of feuding between Robert Mueller and Congress are greatly exaggerated

At least once a week, a major media outlet pushes the same old narrative: Special Counsel Robert Mueller and the various congressional committees are feuding about their respective roles in investigating the Trump-Russia scandal, they’re getting in each other’s way, and some big bad scary unspecified thing could be the result. But no matter how many times this narrative gets recycled, there’s still no evidence to back it up. So why do we keep hearing this?

If it were true that Mueller and Congress were stepping on each other’s feet, it would be an important story. And if you look at the available evidence in the wrong context, you might come away with the impression that they’re feuding. As Congress has asked the various Trump-Russia figures to testify, some of them have agreed under the stipulation that their testimony be in private, because they don’t want Mueller to see it. That sounds like a bad thing, until you look at what’s really going on, and you see a different story.

Mueller will bring these folks to come in and answer his questions when he’s ready for them. He’ll have a judge sign off on a subpoena compelling that testimony, meaning they won’t get a choice. So Mueller will have his way with these witnesses and suspects. In the meantime, there’s no harm to Congress bringing them in for testimony that Mueller won’t have access to. It’s better for that to happen, then for them to clam up and not testify before Congress at all. In addition, there are some tangential benefits in this process for Mueller.

We’ve already seen Mueller have the FBI raid Paul Manafort’s house just hours after his congressional testimony. Mueller must have found some way to get word of what Manafort said, because it was enough to inform him to make an immediate move. Then there’s the case of Michael Cohen, who violated his testimony agreement with Senate by blabbing to the media. As a result the Senate is now moving to compel him to testify publicly, meaning Mueller will get to watch it from home.

So why do so many news outlets keep pushing the narrative that Robert Mueller and Congress are feuding or sabotaging each other? The cynical answer would be that it makes for a juicy story and a great ratings opportunity. In all fairness, it would be an important story if it were true. There just isn’t any evidence that it’s true.

The post Reports of feuding between Robert Mueller and Congress are greatly exaggerated appeared first on Palmer Report.

The real reason Rod Rosenstein is refusing to recuse himself in the Trump-Russia investigation

Last night the news broke that Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein has been interviewed as a witness in Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s obstruction investigation into Donald Trump. That led to immediate questions about why Rosenstein is still refusing to recuse himself from the investigation. Under almost any other circumstances, he certainly would step aside. But these aren’t normal circumstances.

Rosenstein only came to oversee the Trump-Russia investigation after his boss, Attorney General Jeff Sessions, got caught lying about his own role in the scandal and had to recuse himself. Trump then went on to fire FBI Director James Comey in an attempt at sabotaging the investigation. Rosenstein was a witness to that firing, creating a potential conflict. But there are two reasons why Rosenstein isn’t recusing himself. One is technical, and the other is pragmatic.

The minute Rod Rosenstein appointed Robert Mueller as Special Counsel, authority over the investigation was transferred from Rosenstein to Mueller. At this point Rosenstein only has the power to fire or not fire Mueller and nothing more. The only valid reason to fire Mueller would be some sort of criminal conduct on his part, such as conducting the investigation in an illegal manner, or going out and robbing banks in his spare time. Because none of that’s happening, there’s no question about whether Mueller needs to be fired. Therefore, there’s no actual conflict of interest when it comes to Rosenstein having firing authority over Mueller. But there’s a much more important reason why Mueller wouldn’t want Rosenstein to recuse himself.

If Rod Rosenstein were to recuse himself from the Trump-Russia investigation, someone named Rachel Brand would inherit the authority to fire or not fire Robert Mueller. Little is known about what she would do in that situation, but she was hand picked by Trump, so there’s reason to fear the worst. So no matter how convoluted this might become, as long as Rosenstein refuses to recuse himself, Mueller remains on the job and that’s the part that matters.

The post The real reason Rod Rosenstein is refusing to recuse himself in the Trump-Russia investigation appeared first on Palmer Report.

Trump attorney Michael Cohen has officially pissed off the Senate, and now they’re coming for him

In all fairness, it would be an important story – if it were true. There just isn’t any evidence that it’s true.

So no matter how convoluted this might become, as long as Rosenstein refuses to recuse himself, Mueller remains on the job – and that’s the part that matters.

Donald Trump’s bodyguard Keith Schiller resigns just as Donald Trump Jr gives up Secret Service protection

Three weeks ago, Donald Trump’s longtime bodyguard Keith Schiller began informing people that he was planning to leave his White House job (link). As of Tuesday night, he has in fact officially left the job (link). This comes at nearly the exact time as Donald Trump Jr has given up his own Secret Service protection. So what’s really going on here? It appears all three men are trying to hide something.

We’ll see whether or not Schiller does indeed become Donald Trump Jr’s personal bodyguard, as so many are now presuming. But the mere fact that Schiller has left the White House, and the timing of his departure in particular, are a big deal. Donald Trump sent Schiller to hand deliver a firing letter to FBI Director James Comey. It was a bizarre and suspicious move, considering that Schiller was the wrong person for such a task, and Trump knew Comey was on the west coast at the time anyway; he deliberately sent Schiller to an empty office.

That makes Schiller, at the least, a witness in Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Donald Trump’s attempt at obstructing justice when he fired Comey. Schiller revealed his departure from the White House at nearly the same time Mueller began zeroing in on that firing. Quitting his job doesn’t get him off the hook – but it does prevent him from being a witness or participant in any further attempts by Trump at obstructing justice.

Meanwhile, it’s clear that Donald Trump Jr is ditching his Secret Service protection because he knows the agents will have to testify about any illegal activity (including conspiracy to obstruct of justice) that they see him engaging in. Again, this doesn’t erase whatever the agents have already witnessed. But as we’ve seen, these aren’t the brightest people. For instance Trump Jr blocked Palmer Report on Twitter after we published a negative news article about him this summer, and he seemed to think doing so made our article go away.

Based on the timing, it’s fair to assume that Keith Schiller is leaving the White House due to the investigation into the Comey firing, and it’s fair to assume that Donald Trump Jr is ditching his Secret Service protection due to the investigation into his Russia meeting and its coverup. Whether Schiller ends up guarding Trump Jr going forward or not, these men are all merely trying to avoid the inevitable.
