Donald Trump unwittingly tips off that the New York Times is about to drop a major Trump-Russia bombshell

Oops, he did it again. Whenever a major news outlet calls the White House for comment on a major Trump-Russia bombshell story that’s about to be published, Donald Trump has a consistently bad habit of telegraphing that those stories are on their way. Whether he believes he’s framing the narrative in advance, or whether he’s merely lashing out in preemptive anger, he gives it away nearly every time. Now Trump has tipped off that the New York Times has something major up its sleeve.

On an otherwise strangely quiet Sunday morning for him, here’s what Trump tweeted: “The Failing NY Times, in a story by Peter Baker, should have mentioned the rapid terminations by me of TPP & The Paris Accord & the fast approvals of The Keystone XL & Dakota Access pipelines. Also, look at the recent EPA cancelations & our great new Supreme Court Justice!” Although the New York Times story in question is a negative one about Trump, it’s far from the most negative thing that any major news outlet has said about him this weekend.

The story shouldn’t even be on Trump’s radar. Yet he’s clearly angry at the New York Times for a different reason, and so he hunted down an excuse to lash out at the newspaper preemptively. This means he’s gotten the phone call from the Times, asking him for comment on a story that’s truly ticked him off or frightened him. So what is this bombshell?

That’s the tricky part here. Donald Trump didn’t go so far as to give away specifically what the story is, only that it’s coming. In these instances it’s always about the Trump-Russia scandal. The New York Times has a habit of dropping its bombshells on Sunday nights, so it might be worth paying attention this evening. It’s clear that Trump thinks it’s imminent.

At the Intersection of Russia Probe and Social Media: Donald Trump’s Digital Chief

Congressional investigators are homing in on the connections between the 2016 presidential election and social-media giants Facebook and Twitter , a nexus that put Brad Parscale in charge of millions.

Brad Parscale was the Trump campaign’s digital director and his San Antonio company was its highest-paid vendor. Giles-Parscale drew nearly $88 million for about 18 months of work, according to Federal Election Commission disclosures, on top of an additional $4 million since Election Day, which included millions paid to Facebook and other social-media companies. As digital director, Mr. Parscale was responsible for creating and placing ads on social-media platforms such as Facebook, developing the campaign’s website and driving online fundraising efforts.

In July, Mr. Parscale agreed to an interview with the House Intelligence Committee, but later that month the panel postponed it. The committee hasn’t yet set a new date, and, according to a person familiar with the matter, Mr. Parscale hasn’t been contacted by the Senate Intelligence Committee or special counsel Robert Mueller, who, in addition to the congressional panels, is conducting a criminal probe into whether the Trump campaign and its associates colluded with Moscow.

Mr. Trump has denied any collusion by him or any associates, and Russia has said it didn’t meddle in the election.

Mr. Parscale denies any collusion with Moscow. “I am unaware of any Russian involvement in the digital and data operations of the 2016 Trump presidential campaign,” he said in a July statement.

Mr. Parscale’s work was prolific. The campaign tested 40,000 to 60,000 Facebook ads every day, according to a person familiar with the spending. A senior GOP campaign aide said the team would start each day with 70 ads in each target state, such as Florida, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and buy new ads every five minutes, based on what was successful on a range of metrics. Peak days reached nearly 200,000 unique ad combinations, the person said.

The extent of the Trump digital operation’s activity was largely unreported because there are no federal disclosure requirements for online ads. Unlike when they air television and radio ads, campaigns running online ads aren’t required to disclose how much they paid for the ads, whom they paid and where the ads would run.

Now, lawmakers and Mr. Mueller want to know what role activity on Facebook and Twitter played in the election interference, and whether any Russian social-media activity was connected to the Trump campaign. Facebook has estimated that 10 million people saw ads on its website that were paid for by Russia. Mr. Mueller received copies of Russia-backed Facebook ads last month.

“This was a data crime that occurred, carried out at least by Russia, possibly with cooperation with Trump campaign officials, so any Trump campaign official that worked on data, I think, would be relevant to talk to,” said Rep. Eric Swalwell (D., Calif.), a member of the House Intelligence Committee.

Spokesmen for Facebook and Twitter have said they are looking to bolster transparency and toughen safeguards against improper use of their platforms.

Facebook is set to participate in public hearings on Nov. 1 held by the House and Senate Intelligence committees. Twitter and Google will take part in the Senate hearing.

The House panel also has contacted Cambridge Analytica, a data analytics company paid $5 million by the Trump campaign last year that worked together with Mr. Parscale’s firm, for information related to the Russia probe, a Cambridge Analytica spokesman said.

The House panel referred questions to the company, whose spokesman said it would fully cooperate with the probe but added that Cambridge Analytica itself isn’t under investigation. “There is no suggestion of any wrongdoing by the company,” he said.

The White House referred questions to Mr. Trump’s re-election campaign, which declined to comment.

While broadcast stations are required to disclose to the Federal Communications Commission how much they earn from political campaigns and groups and where those dollars are directed, social-media companies don’t have to disclose what share of their advertising revenue comes from political ads.

Facebook has turned over the Russia-backed ads to congressional investigators and the House Intelligence Committee has said it will make them public soon. Facebook said in a statement earlier this month that it is “building new tools” that would allow users to see ads run by a specific individual or group, even if those ads aren’t targeted to that particular user.

Steven Passwaiter, vice president at Kantar Media/CMAG, which tracks political advertising, said his firm is planning to track digital ads for the first time this year, but won’t be able to include ads on social-media platforms such as Facebook, the primary platform used by the Trump campaign.

“Facebook is a walled garden,” said Mr. Passwaiter. “You really don’t get the ability to look in.”

Candidates have traditionally spent the bulk of their advertising money on television, which is considered more effective in reaching mass audiences. Through late October 2016, Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton spent about $140 million on TV ads to Mr. Trump’s $60 million.

The Trump campaign devoted nearly half of its advertising spending to digital ads, according to the person familiar with the spending, much of it for Facebook ads, which helped the campaign and the Republican National Committee build a network of small donors that raised about $250 million in small-dollar donations.

By Election Day, the Trump campaign had spent about $70 million in advertising on Facebook, according to the person familiar with the spending.

“Facebook was the most significant way for the GOP to prospect to find donors,” Mr. Parscale said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal this week. “It’s a tool which allows you to find people who are supporters easier so you can get them into your campaign.”

Overseeing his efforts was Jared Kushner, the president’s son-in-law who now serves as a senior White House adviser. Mr. Kushner was interviewed by the Senate Intelligence Committee in July. Mr. Kushner has denied colluding with Russia.

A person familiar with the effort said Mr. Kushner wasn’t involved in the day-to-day work of running digital advertising. Instead, Mr. Parscale would keep him apprised of the budget and of which voters the campaign was planning to target, the person said.

Much of the money paid to Mr. Parscale was dispersed to social-media platforms to pay for the advertising, as well as to at least one other vendor: Sprinklr, a social-media management service that allows companies to scale up their online presence.

Every vendor that worked with Mr. Parscale on the campaign signed a nondisclosure agreement, according to the person familiar with the spending, and didn’t respond to requests for comment.

The Trump ads Mr. Parscale purchased on Facebook were largely focused on fundraising, showing users images of Mr. Trump or his family while asking them to donate, said the person. Images and videos of Mr. Trump’s daughter, Ivanka Trump, were targeted to mothers. Some contained cartoons attacking Hillary Clinton as corrupt. The campaign also used Facebook to draw large crowds to Mr. Trump’s campaign rallies, the person said.

Images and videos were tested in battleground locations, comparing results by gender and in rural areas and urban areas using a range of metrics. If small ad buys on certain targets performed well, the campaign purchased more, the person said.

The Facebook ads typically bring in fairly small donations and Mr. Parscale’s low rate of financial return on them drew him criticism from both Democrats and Republicans, who questioned the effectiveness of his ads. In response, Mr. Parscale pointed to the high number of small-dollar donors the campaign was attracting.

“Fundraising small dollars literally followed two days ahead of poll data,” Mr. Parscale said of donations raked in through Facebook ads, speaking at a panel hosted by Google in December. “People would vote with their wallets.”

Mr. Trump’s campaign ultimately drew about 65% of its funds from donations of $200 or less. Mrs. Clinton’s share of small-dollar donations: 26%. Mr. Trump’s fundraising was, however, far outpaced by Mrs. Clinton’s. Over the course of the 2016 election cycle, Mr. Trump raised $350 million, to Mrs. Clinton’s $585 million.

Palmer Report: Roger Stone shockingly caves in Donald Trump’s Russia scandal

Of all the various players accused of wrongdoing in Donald Trump’s Russia scandal, the gleefully defiant Roger Stone was the last one whom anyone expected to cave. So when he was faced with a deadline on Friday which would have resulted in subpoena action, most observers – including me – expected him to thumb his nose at it and milk the situation for attention. Instead, in what can only be described as a panic move, Stone has shockingly caved.

The House Intelligence Committee had demanded that Roger Stone turn over the name of his backchannel contact with WikiLeaks, the cyberterrorist group which is believed to have coordinated with Russian government hackers for Donald Trump’s benefit during the election. Throughout the course of the Trump-Russia scandal, Stone had been trying his best to play the rebel. He’s routinely cursed out and threatened the members of Congress investigating the scandal. But this time around, he opted to go ahead and turn over the name of his contact after all.

Stone’s attorney is confirming that the name of the WikiLeaks contact has in fact been turned over to the House Intel Committee (link), while Stone isn’t saying much of anything on Twitter. For all his bluster, for all his desire to gain attention and sell more of his deranged conspiracy books, Stone seems to have decided at the last minute that he doesn’t want to get tossed in jail for contempt of Congress after all.

This is noteworthy because it suggests that Roger Stone, for all his bluster, is not willing to go down with the ship. What happens when Special Counsel Robert Mueller threatens to bring criminal conspiracy charges against him for his communications with Russian hackers during the election? Will Stone cut a deal? If he’s caving on this aspect of the scandal in order to avoid potential arrest, perhaps he’ll end up flipping altogether.

Rex Tillerson goes on CNN and makes Morongate even worse for Donald Trump

Friday afternoon has come and gone, and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson still has his job. This means that, as we suspected, Donald Trump knows he’s now in too weak of a position to get away with firing Tillerson, even though he clearly hates the guy. Tillerson appeared on CNN State of the Union this morning, and while his original intention wasn’t clear, he ended up making the “Morongate” controversy even worse.Republican Senator Bob Corker asserted this week that Trump had “castrated” Tillerson by posting tweets that sabotaged potential negotiations with North Korea. This prompted Tillerson to declare on CNN today that his genitals are still “intact,” in yet another sign of just how far into the gutter the nation is being dragged by Trump the Trash King and his minions. Then came the inevitable question from host Jake Tapper: did Tillerson actually call Trump a moron?

Tillerson once again refused to answer the question. Based on his ongoing non-denials, it’s now 100% clear that Tillerson did in fact call Trump a moron, or as some news outlets have reported it, a “f*cking moron.” What’s far from clear is why Tillerson isn’t willing to simply pretend otherwise. Perhaps he’s unwilling to lie about it on principle alone, or perhaps he’s worried that the witnesses to the incident would be able to prove he’s lying. Either way, Tillerson just made things even worse for Trump. The thing is, he had to have known his appearance was going to make things worse.

Rex TIllerson has no business being Secretary of State, a job for which he has no qualifications or experience but he’s no moron himself. He had to have known that if he appeared on television today, he would be asked yet again whether he called Donald Trump a moron. He once again had no intention of denying it. It’s almost as if Tillerson knows Trump doesn’t have the stones to fire him, and he’s rubbing it in.

Roger Stone shockingly caves in Donald Trumps Russia scandal

Of all the various players accused of wrongdoing in Donald Trump’s Russia scandal, the gleefully defiant Roger Stone was the last one whom anyone expected to cave. So when he was faced with a deadline on Friday which would have resulted in subpoena action, most observers including me expected him to thumb his nose at it and milk the situation for attention.

The post Rex Tillerson goes on CNN and makes “Morongate” even worse for Donald Trump appeared first on Palmer Report.

Donald Trumps own people are now finishing him off

Ever since Donald Trump limped into office after having conspired with a foreign enemy to rig the election in his favor, it’s been clear he would eventually face the music for what he’d done and the question has been who would end up finishing him off. Theories have abounded as to who might end up driving that dagger. But now the answer is rapidly becoming clear and it’s something of a shocker: Trump is being taken down, purposely, by his own people.Three examples this week have spelled this out in abundant fashion. First, his own staffers leaked to the media that they think he’s slipping mentally, that they’re trying to prevent him from doing interviews so he won’t embarrass himself, and that they’ve warned him the 25th Amendment might be invoked against him. It’s clear that Trump’s staffers now fear how badly he’s mentally decomposing, and they’re sounding the alarm in the hope that the public will demand his ouster. But then came two additional surprising developments.

On Friday, Trump’s former White House Chief of Staff held a day-long meeting with Special Counsel Robert Mueller which suggested that Priebus may have flipped on Trump. It’s not that anyone expected Priebus, who was never loyal to Trump, to be willing to risk going to prison for conspiracy obstruction just to protect him. What’s surprising is that Priebus seems to be volunteering to flip on Trump far earlier than would have been necessary. It’s as if Priebus looked at Trump’s deteriorating condition and decided it was time to help get rid of him. Then came the true stunner.

Roger Stone, who may be the closest thing Donald Trump has to a friend, decided on Friday to give the name of his WikiLeaks contact to the House Intelligence Committee. This alone won’t incriminate Trump, but it will help to further the investigation into Trump’s wrongdoing. More importantly, Stone wasn’t willing to rely on Trump pardoning him for contempt of Congress charges. When you’re Trump and you’ve even lost Roger Stone, the clock is ticking rather loudly.

The latest sign that Donald Trump has become toxically radioactive to his own side

There’s a point where a president becomes so unpopular that the members of his own party begin to question how closely they want to be associated with him. Then there’s the point where they want no association at all, which is where Donald Trump is now. In the latest sign that Trump has become toxically unpopular to the point of being radioactive, Republican candidate Ed Gillespie is now tacitly rejecting Trump’s attempted endorsement.

Trump keeps tweeting support for Ed Gillespie, who is running for Governor of Virginia. With just three weeks remaining until election day, Gillespie is down by somewhere between five and fifteen points, depending on which of a handful of polling outlets you want to use as a guidepost. He needs all the help he can get. Yet Gillespie has gone out of his way to ignore Trump’s endorsement. In other words, even though Gillespie is likely to lose, he fears that embracing Trump (or even speaking his name) would only further weaken his chances of winning.

If things get even worse for Gillespie as election day nears, it’s possible he might reverse course and try embracing Trump as a last ditch move. But for now Gillespie is standing his ground, declining to campaign with Trump, pretending the endorsement never happened, and acting like Trump doesn’t exist. This suggests that Gillespie has calculated he would lose more voters by embracing Trump than he would gain. It’s a harbinger for what’s to come.

The 2018 midterm elections are still down the road, and a lot can happen in the meantime. But if Donald Trump is still this unpopular (or even more unpopular) next year, Republican candidates in all but the reddest of states and districts will feel compelled to treat Trump as if he doesn’t exist, in an effort at insulating themselves from the growing anti-Trump backlash among the American mainstream. That is, of course, if Trump is even still in office by that time.

Donald Trump’s defense strategy in the Trump-Russia scandal just completely imploded

For months we’ve known what Donald Trump’s endgame strategy would be once the investigation into his Russia scandal reached his own top advisers. His strategy has been clear, both because it’s been easy to figure out, and because he’s openly bragged about it. But now that Special Counsel Robert Mueller and Congressional investigators have indeed broached Trump’s inner circle, that singular strategy has suddenly imploded in a period of just twenty-four hours.

Trump’s strategy has always been straightforward enough: he was simply going to promise pardons to everyone who was being pressured to flip on him. Trump publicly floated the idea of pardons a few months back, in what was rather clearly a signal to his own people. Some have even theorized that Trump made a point of preemptively pardoning his political ally Joe Arpaio on contempt charges, just to prove to his Trump-Russia co-conspirators that he would take care of them as well. But then this Friday happened, and that strategy began imploding on two fronts.

This week Robert Mueller decided to skip over a number of people in the Trump senior staff hierarchy and jump straight to former White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus. The only reason for Mueller to be talking to Priebus this early is if Priebus has indicated he’s interested in flipping. According to numerous reports, the two spent the entire day together on Friday, which suggests he did indeed flip. So much for the notion of Priebus remaining quiet and being willing to face potential conspiracy obstruction charges, and then banking on Trump pardoning him.

Of course Reince Priebus never really liked or trusted Trump to begin with. But then one of Donald Trump’s true allies also hit the panic button. Roger Stone, Trump’s friend of forty years and personal adviser, gave up the name of his WikiLeaks contact to the House Intel Committee on Friday (link). Stone could have been arrested for contempt of Congress, and he apparently wasn’t willing to count on a Trump pardon. Do Priebus and Stone no longer trust Trump to protect them, or do they fear his pardons wouldn’t hold up in court? In any case, Trump’s pardon strategy is now imploding.

I DO NOT LIKE YOU, FACEBOOK!

You are cheap, pretentious, primitive, and mediocre, just like the majority of your customers. Like “faces”, like “books”, like “posts”, like the uniform mentality of your everywhere-nowhere “friends”. Somewhere between the kindergarten and the institution for the mentally challenged.

Not only its current CEO, but the Facebook itself is an insult to the potentials of the human intelligence, interactions, and communications. And all this for the little shiny penny, rolling into the billions of dollars. And sometimes, the nefarious penny, too.

Several years ago, Google, Facebook, and many other services and sites restricted their use of RSS interoperability and turned themselves into the separate Internet fiefdoms to protect their “proprietary” devices and outlets, and therefore, profits. This contradicts the whole big idea. The broad RSS interoperability should be legislatively mandated across all platforms.

Newt Gingrich: ‘Death to America’ — Why Trump’s Iran policy is right

When the Iranian parliament chanted “death to America” while unanimously voting “to increase spending on its ballistic missile program and the foreign operations of its paramilitary Revolutionary Guard,” sophisticated diplomats may have pondered the symbolic meaning of “death to America.”

After all, our wisest and most sophisticated analysts have reassured us, it couldn’t literally mean “death to America.” The New York Times has been on a campaign to convince Americans the phrase has lost its original meaning.

Jeff Sessions is about to testify publicly before a very angry Senate committee

Even as Donald Trump’s entire administration seems to be in flames this week and he seems to want to burn down the nation accordingly, his Attorney General Jeff Sessions is about to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee. Based on the generic description of the hearing, it sounds like it’s supposed to be a run of the mill public hearing. But that just changed, because several members of the committee just threw gasoline on his upcoming appearance.

The hearing in question is listed simply as “Oversight of the U.S. Department of Justice” on the Senate Judiciary Committee website. Jeff Sessions is the only witness listed. However the juicy part comes not from the official calendar itself, but from a letter which nine Democrats on the committee have jointly sent Sessions. In short, the letter lambasts Sessions for having inappropriately cited executive privilege during his appearance before the Senate Intelligence Committee this summer, as he was attempting to avoid giving anything away about his likely illegal conversations with Donald Trump.

The letter in question isn’t signed by a single Republican on the committee, meaning that none of them are willing to hold Sessions to any official consequences. But with the way these hearings work, each Democrat on the committee will have an opportunity to grill Sessions individually, and it’s clear they intend to hammer away at him. Oh and by the way, this particular hearing is a public one, meaning that they’ll get to roast Sessions in front of a live audience watching at home.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions is set to testify this Wednesday, October 18th, beginning at 10:00am eastern time. According to the Senate Judiciary Committee’s official website, the hearing will be streamed live online (link). That means it will also air live on television; certainly on CSPAN and likely on CNN and MSNBC as well. You can read the angry letter from the Senate Democrats to Jeff Sessions here.

The real calm before the storm

Nothing about anything in America has been calm since the day Donald Trump stole a rigged election, and for that matter, since the day he embarrassingly entered the race. But within the context of the turbo berserk roller coaster weve all been stuck on since that time, and the manner in which its been accelerating for the past month, this weekend has been less about the roller coaster and more about the fact that we all know a Shaquille ONeal sized shoe is about to drop on someone.

Lets be honest. We dont even know for sure how some of these latest pieces fit together; we only know that theyre not all happening by coincidence. Robert Mueller has skipped all the way to interviewing Trumps former chief of staff, even as its exposed that Trumps former campaign chairman was committing treason level crimes. In these same past few days, Trump has suddenly begun frantically torching America like a drunken patron who knows hes about to get thrown out of the bar and figures he might as well trash the place on the way out the door.

Trump has unilaterally taken desperate moves to try to destroy everything from health care to peace with Iran, and for no reason other than the fact that hes always wanted to destroy these things because they have President Obamas name on them. Trump is an unhinged sociopath; weve always known this. But why torch these things now? Why not last month? Why not next month? Something is going on here. We cant quite put out r finger yet on what it is. Trump, despite his largely failed mental function, seems to know simething we dont for once. what we dont.

So what happens next? In the tragedy that is the Donald Trump reign of terror, things were always going to have to get worse before they could get better. Things are now bottoming out in a manner that wont be sustainable for long. Trump knows it too; its why hes trying to take a flamethrower to the country while he still can. Something is about to give on his end. As utterly chaotic as things are in this moment, its still the relative calm before the storm. Buckle up. But keep in mind that its always darkest before the sunrise.

Potential voter data backchannel uncovered between Donald Trump campaign and Russian hackers

As investigators and the media continue to try to pinpoint how the Donald Trump campaign and the Russian government were conspiring to use voter data to rig the 2016 election, much of the focus has been on data analysis company Cambridge Analytica. Now a data scientist has uncovered what could have been a backchannel for the Trump campaign to use the company to steer Russian hackers in the right direction.

Professor Jonathan Albright has discovered that a Cambridge Analytica intern posted the company’s voter targeting algorithms to an online personal account just after Super Tuesday, and then bizarrely left them there for the entirety of the election. The intern listed them as “work samples” but it’s difficult to believe that any intern would have been publicly posting his company’s secret algorithms just to show off his skills. It raises the question of whether this was how the company was clandestinely making its secret algorithms available to Russian hackers in plain sight.

Cambridge Analytica has largely been funded by the Mercer family, which also heavily funded the Donald Trump campaign. Furthermore, Steve Bannon was running Cambridge Analytica at the time he was hired to run the Trump campaign. It has long been widely suspected, but never proven, that the company was working with U.S. voter data that had been supplied by the Russian hackers who tried to get into the voter registration databases of dozens of states during the election. Proving this suspicion would require uncovering potential communication channels between the company and the Russians.

If it turns out the Cambridge Analytica intern’s posting was indeed an intentional method of backdoor communication between the company and Russian hackers, it may open the door to exposing the full extent of the collusion that’s suspected to have taken place. You can read Professor Albright’s full research findings link).

Reince Priebus and White House Counsel Don McGahn may have both flipped on Donald Trump today

Donald Trump’s former White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus was interviewed by Special Counsel Robert Mueller today, in a shocking move that raised questions about everything we thought we knew about Mueller’s progress in his Trump-Russia investigation. Priebus is too far up the food chain for Mueller to be interviewing this early unless it was because Priebus was ready to flip on Trump. There’s another detail which suggests Priebus may not have done it in solo fashion.

Mueller’s strategy would be to interview everyone under Reince Priebus before even thinking about sitting down with him, so Mueller could take as much evidence and leverage into that meeting as possible. Even if Priebus volunteered to testify early, Mueller would likely turn him down unless Priebus was looking to make a deal. Priebus witnessed Trump’s obstruction of justice and may have even participated in it, but it’s easy to picture Mueller giving Priebus a free pass in exchange for damning testimony about Trump’s crimes. Here’s the catch: Priebus is inexorably tied to White House Counsel Don McGahn.

Not only did Reince Priebus and Don McGahn spend several years working closely together for the Republican National Committee, they also currently share the same attorney in the Trump-Russia scandal. If Priebus did flip on Friday, in legal terms it would mean that he flipped on everyone involved, including technically McGahn. This would make it impossible for them to have the same attorney, unless McGahn also flipped.

In fact their decision to share an attorney, in a scandal where they’re both potentially implicated for crimes, has screamed from the start that they’d end up making any decisions jointly. Reince Priebus’ meeting with Robert Mueller today probably means he’s flipped on Donald Trump and by extension, it means Don McGahn has also probably flipped on Trump.

The post Reince Priebus and White House Counsel Don McGahn may have both flipped on Donald Trump today appeared first on Palmer Report.

Palmer Report: Donald Trumps defense strategy in the Trump-Russia scandal just completely imploded

Jeff Sessions is about to testify publicly before a very angry Senate committee
Sun, 15 Oct 2017 12:02:03 -0400

The post Jeff Sessions is about to testify publicly before a very angry Senate committee appeared first on Palmer Report.

Newt Gingrich: ‘Death to America’ — Why Trump’s Iran policy is right

mikenova shared this story .

Here are examples from 201320142015, and 2017.

The same analysts reassure us that when senior Hamas leaders are quoted saying “not a single Jew will remain” in Israel, they are really communicating symbolically.

As a historian, I am always amazed at the sophistry of well-educated establishments that hide from reality through the use of convoluted thinking and clever language.

In my experience, dictators and revolutionary movements mean exactly what they say. In this case, the Iranians would like to destroy both America and Israel.

Thankfully, President Trump understands this reality better than many so-called experts.

The president did exactly the right thing Friday when he announced that he would renew sanctions on the Iranian regime and decline to certify the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (also known as the Iran Deal) negotiated by President Obama.

President Trump has previously referred to the deal as “an embarrassment to the United States,” and called it “one of the worst and most one-sided transactions the United States has ever entered into.”

Since he was a candidate, the President understood that America is today with the Iranian dictatorship where it was in 1994 with the North Korean dictatorship. We now know that during 23 years of talking, posturing, and diplomatic maneuvering, the North Koreans simply kept building their nuclear weapon and missile programs.

As the president said Friday “History has shown that the longer we ignore a threat, the more dangerous that threat becomes.”

The president saw that we are today faced with the same choice with Iran that we had in North Korea in 1994. He decided to show the courage to tell the truth and act on it.

This will be a big surprise to Iran – and North Korea. Having been conditioned by eight years of President Obama to assume that America will always posture and then cave, neither of these rogue nations knows how to deal with a super power that is serious.

The weaknesses of the Obama agreement with Iran are simply symptoms of the weakness and self-delusion behind the entire Obama team approach to the Iranian dictatorship and its revolutionary terrorist strategies.

Iran has proved that appeasement and negotiation fail time and again.

Starting in 1979, when Ayatollah Khomeini established a religious dictatorship that exported terror and saw itself at war with America (‘the Great Satan”) and Israel (“the Little Satan”), American policy became increasingly hostile to the regime.

During the 1979-1981 Iranian hostage crisis, which was itself a total violation of international law, the Jimmy Carter Administration attempted a rational negotiating strategy. It was completely rejected by the mullahs.

During the Reagan administration in 1983, truck bombs driven by Iranian-sponsored operatives killed 241 U.S. service personnel (220 marine and 21 other personnel) and 58 French paratroopers in Lebanon, and the United States quietly helped the Iraqis with intelligence and military equipment in their war with Iran.

From 1987 to 1988 the United States provided naval support to help Kuwaiti tankers get through the straits of Hormuz. In that process, the Iranians tried to mine the Persian Gulf, and an American warship shot down an Iranian airliner it thought was on a dangerous course.

Throughout the period of 1979 to 2008, the United States had a consistent policy of containing the Iranian dictatorship. It was clear that Iranians killed 19 Americans with a bomb at Khobar Towers in Saudi Arabia. Iran was consistently labeled the leading state sponsor of terrorism in the world by every administration (including Obama’s).

President George W. Bush identified the Iranian dictatorship, along with Iraq and North Korea, as part of an “Axis of Evil.” During our efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan the Iranians worked hard to establish their own zones of influence.

However, When President Obama came into office, nearly 30 years of hostility was replaced by a new vision of developing a relationship with the Iranian dictatorship. This is the delusional fantasy that has allowed Iran to dominate much of the Middle East, especially after Iraq was weakened by war. It also emboldened Iran.

Even after President Trump’s historic and amazing United Nations speech when he condemned the JCPOA and said Iran is a “reckless regime – one that speaks openly of mass murder, vowing death to America, destruction to Israel, and ruin for many leaders and nations in this room,” the Iranians responded by building more missiles.

Consider this report by Reuters titled “Defying Trump, Iran says will boost missile capabilities”:

“Iran will strengthen its missile capabilities and not seek any country’s permission, President Hassan Rouhani said on Friday rejecting demands from U.S. President Donald Trump.

“Rouhani spoke at a military parade where an Iranian news agency said one of the weapons on display was a new ballistic missile with range of 1,200 miles, capable of carrying several warheads. …

“In a speech broadcast on state television, Rouhani said: ‘We will increase our military power as a deterrent. We will strengthen our missile capabilities … We will not seek permission from anyone to defend our country.’”

For those who wonder how big the Iranian missile program is, AP reported that, “Brigadier General Hossein Salami of the Revolutionary Guard boasted that ‘the rate of our missile production is so high that we are faced with the problem of space’ to keep them in.”

President Trump also realizes his administration must not consider the JCPOA in isolation.

The failure of the JCPOA is simply one component of a disastrous Obama policy which has enabled Iran to break out and begin to develop a hegemonic position across Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon (with a dangerous extension to Gaza).

For instance, Iranians have been desperate to build a land corridor to connect with Lebanon since the Reagan Administration was dueling with the Iranian-sponsored terrorists there. Obama’s myopic policy of focusing only on the JCPOA gave Iran the opportunity it needed to gain that corridor.

As a result, we are currently faced with preparations for war on a scale the Middle East has not seen since the Yom Kippur War in 1973.

Hezbollah, the Iranian front group in South Lebanon, has more than 100,000 missiles that can be fired into Israel. As though that isn’t enough of a threat, the Iranians plan to build missile factories in Syria and Lebanon. In addition, they are talking about developing an Iranian port in Lebanon.

The weakness and confusion America has shown in Syria has created a Russian-Iranian-Assad-Hezbollah alliance that will push the threat to Israel to a totally new and dangerous level.

Flush with money from Obama (including an airplane full of cash flown in like a drug cartel run), Iran has funded a proxy war in Yemen against the Saudis. More Iranian money has been sent to prop up Hamas after the various Sunni funders began to cut them off.

On every front, Iran is a dangerous nation seeking to build up its capacity to wage war, project power, and intimidate its neighbors.

Meanwhile, the JCPOA is another absurdity that illustrates how weak the Obama team was and how eager its members were to get an Iranian agreement to “something.”

Congress should move forward with initiatives to strengthen it.

Under the current agreement, the Iranians have reserved the right to keep their military installations secret. Thus, international inspectors can look for violations anywhere except on military facilities. This means the inspections can have no validity, because inspectors will never know what they are not allowed to see.

Finally, the United Nations agreement limiting Iranian missile development is being blatantly and publicly violated. That strikes at the very heart of the Corker-Cardin requirement that Iran must be fully implementing the related agreements. Iran’s failed launch of a missile in January (which was based on North Korean designs) and its faked launch in September, are a blatant violations of the agreement.

The terms of the Corker-Cardin “Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act” (INARA/ PL 114-17) require the president to certify Iran’s compliance with the JCPOA every 90 days.

Full compliance under this law requires the United States to certify that: (1) Iran is fully implementing the JCPOA and all related agreements; (2) Iran has not committed (or if committed, has cured) a material breach; (3) Iran has taken no action to significantly advance its nuclear weapons program; and (4) that continued suspension of nuclear-related sanctions is both appropriate and vital to our national security interests.

It is impossible to argue that criterion four has been met when Iran’s behavior in its totality is taken into account. This is exactly the logic the president followed on Friday.

How can you take President Trump’s strong, clear denunciation of the dictatorship and argue that continued suspension of sanctions on Iran is both appropriate and vital to our national interest? It’s impossible.

Unlike President Obama, whose posture was all talk and no action, President Trump has begun to establish a pattern of taking real actions, creating real pressures, and insisting on real results.

President Trump’s decision to decertify is a clear and forceful articulation of the comprehensive Trump policy toward Iran.

However, he didn’t come to this decision alone. The President spent months working with his Cabinet to make this decision. Confronting the totality of the Iranian threat, while remaining in the JCPOA with an eye toward improving it, substantially reflects the influence of Secretary of State Rex Tillerson. In helping shape a new Iran policy that better provides for America’s security interests, Tillerson has proved to be an able advisor to the president, and has de-bunked media myths about a Trump-Tillerson rift in the process.

The administration should continue to oppose Iran’s aggression in the region and seek to eliminate the fundamental flaws of the nuclear deal (starting with the sunset clauses).

As United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley made clear in her recent speech at the American Enterprise Institute, certification and the US continuation of the JCPOA are two separate decisions. Decertification leaves the President with continued flexibility and a number of options. In fact, decertification will increase the Administration’s leverage to fix the nuclear deal by clarifying that the US will not be satisfied to remain indefinitely in an agreement that is not in our national security interests.

Conversely, signing recertification would have undermined every strong signal we have sent about the Iranian dictatorship. They would interpret it as America flinching and pulling back. It would have made the President’s powerful indictment of Iran and North Korea at the United Nations seem hollow.

President Trump’s decisive refusal to recertify the JCPOA has drawn a line and communicated clearly that the rollback of Iranian influence has begun. It was a brave and historically necessary step.

Gerson: Growing danger in the White House

mikenova shared this story from Boston Herald – Boston Herald.

WASHINGTON — In the midst of a governing crisis, House Speaker Paul Ryan has once again risen to his role as the voice of bland complacency. Concerning the open warfare between President Trump and Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., Ryan advises “these two gentlemen to sit down and just talk through their issues.”

But what are Corker’s “issues”? He has asserted that Trump requires constant handling to control his volatility: “I know for a fact that every single day at the White House, it’s a situation of trying to contain him.” Corker has accused Trump of lacking strategic thinking: “A lot of people think that there is some kind of ‘good cop, bad cop’ act underway, but that’s just not true.” Corker has called out Trump’s routine deceptions: “I don’t know why the president tweets out things that are not true.” Corker has talked of Trump’s vacuity: He acts “like he’s doing ‘The Apprentice’ or something.” Corker, who chairs the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has expressed the fear that Trump’s instability could lead to conflict: “We could be headed toward World War III with the kind of comments that he’s making.”

So how does Ryan imagine that a Corker/Trump conversation might unfold? Over dinner, Corker accuses the president of being a chaotic, directionless, shallow liar who could start a nuclear war. Trump passes the peas and attacks Corker for being short. This is, after all, the way gentlemen resolve their differences.

GOP denial about Trump has generally taken Ryan’s form. The president may be eccentric and divisive, but Republicans need to keep their heads down and think of tax reform. This assumes that the main challenge is to avoid distraction from essential tasks.

But the real problem has always been Trump’s fundamental unfitness for high office. It is not Trump’s indiscipline and lack of leadership, which make carrying a legislative agenda forward nearly impossible. It is not his vulgarity and smallness, which have been the equivalent of spray painting graffiti on the Washington Monument. It is not his nearly complete ignorance of policy and history, which condemns him to live in the eternal present of his own immediate desires.

No, Corker has given public permission to raise the most serious questions: Is Trump psychologically and morally equipped to be president? And could his unfitness cause permanent damage to the country?

It is no longer possible to safely ignore the leaked cries for help coming from within the administration. They reveal a president raging against enemies, obsessed by slights, deeply uninformed and incurious, unable to focus, and subject to destructive whims. A main task of the chief of staff seems to be to shield him from dinner guests and telephone calls that might set him off on a foolish or dangerous tangent. Much of the White House senior staff seems bound, not by loyalty to the president, but by a duty to protect the nation from the president. Trump, in turn, is reported to have said: “I hate everyone in the White House.” And also, presumably, at the State Department, headed by a secretary of state who apparently regards his boss as a “moron.”

It was once urged, “Let Reagan be Reagan.” Who, besides the oleaginous Sean Hannity, would say, “Let Trump be Trump”? The security of our country — and potentially the lives of millions of people abroad — depends on Trump being someone else entirely. It depends on the president being some wise, strategic, restrained leader he has never been.

The time for whispered criticisms and quiet snickering is over. The time for panic and decision is upon us. The thin line of sane, responsible advisers at the White House — such as chief of staff John Kelly, Defense Secretary James Mattis and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson — could break at any moment. Already, Trump’s protests of eternal love for Kelly are a bad sign for the general’s future. The American government now has a dangerous fragility at its very center. Its welfare is as thin as an eggshell — perhaps as thin as Donald Trump’s skin.

Any elected Republican who shares Corker’s concerns has a political and moral duty to state them in public. If Corker is correct, many of his colleagues do have such fears. Their silence is deafening and damning.

“Brave men are all vertebrates,” said G.K. Chesterton. “They have their softness on the surface and their toughness in the middle. But these modern cowards are all crustaceans; their hardness is all on the cover, and their softness is inside.”

More than anything else at this moment, the nation has need of Republican vertebrates.
