1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: Trump’s acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker just blinked

  •
  •
  •
  •

When Donald Trump announced last week that he was ousting Attorney General Jeff Sessions and replacing him with Matthew Whitaker in an acting capacity, it doesn’t appear Trump considered the possibility that Whitaker might have to recuse himself from theTrump-Russia probe. This is remarkable considering that Sessions recused himself the minute he got into trouble, and that Whitaker is arguably in an even more problematic position. After several days of taking a beating, Whitaker just very publicly blinked.

Matthew Whitaker just announced through a Department of Justice spokesperson, relayed by CBS News and others, that he’s planning to “consult with senior ethics officials at DOJ about possible recusal in Special Counsel investigation.” This doesn’t automatically mean that he’s going to recuse himself, but it means he’s figured out he’s looking at real trouble for himself if he doesn’t recuse. The key here is that he publicly announced it.

This means that Whitaker has blinked. If he ends up deciding not to recuse himself, after having publicly acknowledged that even he knows there are conflicts of interest, it’ll make it far easier for the Democrats to force him to recuse himself.

It’s not difficult to parse why Matthew Whitaker might be worried about his own fate. Before taking the gig, he announced via multiple media outlets that he thought the Trump-Russia investigation should be sabotaged from within. If he now goes ahead and does that, after having already admitted that he had bad faith intentions, he could easily end up facing felony obstruction of justice charges. Donald Trump surely told Whitaker that he’d be fine and not to worry about it – but Trump keeps telling his people that, and they keep ending up in prison.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: Roger Stone’s Trump-Russia pal Jerome Corsi says he’s days from being indicted. Here’s what it really means.

  •
  •
  •
  •

For the past few months, the ongoing tidbits surfacing out of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s grand jury have left little doubt that he’s looking to indict and arrest Donald Trump’s pal Roger Stone. The only question has been precisely when it’ll happen, and Mueller has been keeping that close to the vest. Now there’s a new twist, as Stone’s pal Jerome Corsi just announced that he expects to be indicted within days. So what’s really going on here?

Weeks ago it was reported that Jerome Corsi, a conspiracy theorist who’s long been popular on the far right, had been brought before the grand jury to testify against Roger Stone. At the time it appeared that Corsi was just another witness, and his storyline promptly went cold. But now Corsi says that he’s been informed that he’s about to be indicted for perjury, according to CNN and other news outlets.

Robert Mueller has long made clear that he doesn’t like it when people try to sabotage his work. But at this late date, why bother busting a relative peon like Corsi? For all we know, Mueller could be handing this case off to a U.S. Attorney so he doesn’t have to spend as much time on it. But still, why bust Corsi now? Further, why bother telling Corsi he’s about to be busted? Usually, you only tell someone they’re about to get popped if you’re hoping to get them to promptly cut a deal. So this suggests an urgency on Mueller’s part.

Jerome Corsi is asking his readers to fund his legal defense, but that’s not necessarily an indicator of whether he’s willing to cut a plea deal; he’d need lawyers either way. What this does tell us is that Robert Mueller is about to drop the hammer on at least two people at once – Stone and Corsi – which in turn seems to all us that he’s gearing up to indict a whole lot of people across the board, either simultaneously or in successive fashion.

Roger Stone associate has been under scrutiny in relation to hacking and leaking of Hillary Clinton emails

Jerome Corsi, a rightwing author and conspiracy theorist, has said he expects to be criminally indicted by Robert Mueller, the special counsel.

Corsi, an associate of the longtime Donald Trump adviser Roger Stone, said on his online live stream on Monday that he would soon be charged “for some form of lying” by Mueller’s team, which is investigating Russia’s interference in the 2016 election.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: Emmanuel Macron seems to know something about Donald Trump that we don’t

  •
  •
  •
  •

It’s time to play “What does Emmanuel Macron know that we do not?” This weekend, Trump was in France and so was Vladimir Putin. In uncharacteristic fashion, French President Emmanuel Macron, known for his genteel nature, lashed out at Trump in a public way, not once, not twice, but three times. All I have to say is “Way to go, Emmanuel.”

The occasion in France was to remember the lessons from World War I and to honor those who fought for democracy, as well as to celebrate the end of the war and our continued, albeit shaky at times, peace accord. President Macron of France did set the tone, stating that Europe needed to consider having a separate and distinct European army to protect them from rogue nations, including the United States. Trump, quick to respond, tweeted before landing in France, that he was insulted by the comment.

Apparently, the tone of contention has continued as the weekend progressed. Did President Macron discover something that Trump and Putin are up to in the meantime? Because he sure has been throwing some serious diplomatic shade in the City of Lights during the anniversary ceremonies in Paris. He made the comment about the army, which is a legitimate concern, prior to the ceremony. He also made the following statement in a speech, which was clearly aimed at both Trump and Putin who were also in attendance: “Patriotism is the exact opposite of nationalism: nationalism is treason. By saying “our interests first and what others import!”, we erase what a Nation has most precious, which makes it live: its moral values.” Macron’s office later tweeted this quote from his speech, showing he is capable of fighting fire with fire.

And finally, in his most endearing move yet, President Macron led Trump and Putin to believe they would be seated next to each other at a luncheon held on Sunday, and that would be the best time for them to collude, I mean hold bilateral discussions. However, Macron had a trick up his sleeve and at the last minute, switched the two, and had them sitting at opposite sides of the table. Supposedly, the Kremlin has already voiced their complaints to France regarding the “gaffe” but I doubt Macron is losing any sleep over it. He seems to know something we don’t.
