1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: Julian Assange’s mother has apparently bailed on him after learning of criminal charges

Twenty-four hours ago, an errant (or perhaps not so errant) filing from federal prosecutors revealed that WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has already been secretly criminally charged. That’s set off a whole lot of debate about what comes next as far as extradition, along with speculation about what Robert Mueller’s prosecutorial allies may have already secretly done in that regard. Now here comes Assange’s mother.

Julian Assange’s mom is named Christine Assange. There is a popular Twitter account claiming to be her, and while it’s not a Twitter-verified account, it’s widely believed that it really is her. This evening, Mrs. Assange tweeted this:

“Dear followers & supporters of my son Julian. Regretfully I am no longer involved in the campaign to free my son or available for comment. Don’t worry, I’m ok. Many thanks to everyone for your all your work, kind wishes & support.”

She then included links to two other Twitter accounts aimed at defending and/or protecting Julian Assange. So it’s clear that she hasn’t turned against her son; instead she’s simply bailing on him. Why? Only she knows. But you can’t overlook the timing here. Last night she learned, along with the rest of us, that Julian has been criminally charged in the United States. Now she’s suddenly stepping out of the picture. What’s going on here? Stay tuned.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: Donald Trump screws up his written answers for Robert Mueller

  •
  •
  •
  •

There are several recent signs that Special Counsel Robert Mueller is preparing to make major moves in the Trump Russia scandal – including indictment and arrests of big fish – within days. Even as this plays out, Mueller has also clearly given Donald Trump a hard deadline for answering his written questions, as Trump bragged today that he has finished answering the questions. In the process of bragging, legal experts believe he screwed up.

According to Josh Campbell of CNN, Donald Trump said this today about Robert Mueller’s questions: “I write the answers. My lawyers don’t write answers. I write answers. I was asked a series of questions. I’ve answered them very easily – very easily.” Okay, we’re not sure what kind of student stops to brag about having finished his homework on time before turning it in, but so be it. Except wait a minute, it turns out Trump just said something really stupid.

Respected former federal prosecutor Joyce Vance summed it up this way on Twitter: “This could potentially be helpful to the Mueller investigation, as the President is publicly adopting the answers as his own. One of the reasons to answer in writing is to create some distance. His lawyers won’t be happy to see this.”

So there you have it. In his eagerness to brag about how he was smart enough to have done his own homework without the help of his legal tutors, Donald Trump just made it easier for Robert Mueller to nail him. Trump just keeps making this easier for Mueller.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: Trump’s acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker is under FBI criminal investigation

  •
  •
  •
  •

We’ve all had fun these past few days watching new Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker’s embarrassingly fraudulent antics get exposed, from his “masculine toilet” to his phony time machines. And we’ve known from the start of this that Whitaker’s scam company has been shut down by the Federal Trade Commission. But now, as confirmed by Rachel Maddow on-air on MSNBC this evening, it turns out Whitaker and his company are under active FBI criminal investigation.

This may be a bit of a problem, considering that Donald Trump has illegally put Matthew Whitaker in charge of the Department of Justice, which oversees the FBI. That’s right, Whitaker is now technically in charge of the criminal investigation into himself. So where does this go from here?

Numerous legal challenges to the legitimacy of Whitaker’s appointment are playing out in court as we speak; the court system could end up ruling that Whitaker isn’t the legitimate Acting Attorney General; current Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein is instead. But the House Democrats are also taking a different approach, which appears to be aimed at scaring Whitaker into submission during what is expected to be a brief tenure.

The incoming chairs of several House committees have formally announced that they’re launching an investigation into Matthew Whitaker’s scam company. They’ve already begun requesting documents, and that’ll translate into subpoenas the minute they officially take control in early January. The message to Whitaker is fairly clear: if you mess with Robert Mueller, we’ll expose your lifetime of crimes, and you’ll go to prison for them. We’ll see if Whitaker blinks.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: Donald Trump gives away that Robert Mueller is about to pounce

  •
  •
  •
  •

It’s Friday night, and in the Donald Trump criminal scandal era, that usually means major news. Despite huge clues dropped in three different court filings over the past twenty-four hours that everything is going to explode within the next several days, it’s been a comparatively quiet evening for Trump-Russia news thus far. That was, of course, until Trump went and tipped off that Mueller is about to pounce.

Remember back before the midterm elections, when Donald Trump was obsessed with mischaracterizing a Central American migrant caravan in scary and racist fashion? He stopped talking about it entirely, the minute he lost the midterms. After all, the entire narrative was never anything more than a failed election stunt. But now, suddenly, out of nowhere, Trump is breaking glass in case of emergency.

Trump just posted this bizarre meltdown: “Isn’t it ironic that large Caravans of people are marching to our border wanting U.S.A. asylum because they are fearful of being in their country – yet they are proudly waving their country’s flag. Can this be possible? Yes, because it is all a BIG CON, and the American taxpayer is paying for it!” At this point there is, of course, only one reason he would be desperate enough to try to reignite this dormant narrative.

Donald Trump clearly thinks that Robert Mueller is about to make a move tonight or tomorrow, and he’s hoping that his new caravan rant will prompt the media to divert some of its coverage. We don’t think the media will bite, but it’s clear that Trump has decided he’s in desperate need of a media distraction for the next twenty-four hours. What does he know that we don’t?

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: Donald Trump’s defense mechanisms have truly failed him

  •
  •
  •
  •

Psychologists call them defense mechanisms. There are around fifteen or so common defense mechanisms and they range in manifestation from denial to rationalization to reaction formation. In mentally healthy humans they are often positive psychological contrivances utilized to preserve mental and emotional stability.

In mentally unstable humans who sometimes present with exaggerated defense mechanisms, the behavior of such individuals can be consequently problematic. An unstable person in denial can become so deeply entrenched in that defense mechanism as to be incapable of dealing with their difficulties directly, as they refuse to acknowledge (that is, they deny) any problem to begin with.

Donald Trump is a deeply mentally unstable person whose most common defense mechanism presents as projection. “Projection,” according to psychologist Kevin FitzMaurice, “is the attribution to others of your own negative self-concepts. This occurs when you want to avoid facing negative self-concepts about your behaviors or intentions, and you do so by seeing them in other people instead.”

For example, in recent reports about chaos in the White House, Donald Trump pushed back directly when he tweeted on November 15th: “The White House is running very smoothly and the results for our Nation are obviously very good. We are the envy of the world.” Yet, on the same day Trump tweeted, “The inner workings of the Mueller investigation are a total mess … They are screaming and shouting at people, horribly threatening them to come up with the answers they want. They are a disgrace to our Nation …”

Notice Trump’s choice of violent or chaotic words: “total mess,” “screaming and shouting,” “horribly threatening,” “a disgrace.” Trump, through the defense mechanism of denial, is describing his own administration. Trump is witnessing his own frenetic and besieged White House coming apart and trying to project the chaos he sees to where he desperately needs it to be, in the offices of the Mueller investigation. Meanwhile, back in reality, the Mueller investigation is proceeding apace, ticking over like the well-oiled machine that it is, moving forward with the very glacial, competent, relentless iciness that Donald Trump can only dream about for his own chaotic, ruined presidency.
