1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: How Nancy Pelosi pulled it off

  •
  •

  •

When a centrist-led handful of House Democrats released a letter on Monday announcing that they would refuse to vote for Nancy Pelosi as Speaker of the House, it revealed that they had a problem: Congresswoman Marcia Fudge, the only potential Pelosi challenger they could find, hadn’t signed it. Sure enough, Fudge announced today that she was endorsing Pelosi. So how did Pelosi pull it off?

It’s not that centrist Democrats Tim Ryan and Seth Moulton truly wanted Marcia Fudge to be Speaker; it’s just that they’ve long wanted to topple Nancy Pelosi, and in the current climate, they know they can’t challenge her from her right. So instead they’ve been trying to find someone, anyone, to challenge Pelosi from the left. Fudge was the only one who seemed interested in taking them up on it. But in hindsight, it appears that Fudge simply realized she could use them to get the one thing she truly wanted.

If you look at Marcia Fudge’s recent public remarks, it’s clear that she considers African American voting rights to be a priority. And if you look the blatantly racist voter suppression that just happened the midterms, it’s easy to understand why Fudge justifiably sees this as such a priority (as should we all). Nancy Pelosi, who always manages to get straight to the salient part, figured out that she could get Fudge on her side, simply by reinstating the subcommittee on elections (which the GOP had gotten rid of), and by making Fudge its Chair.

Congressional movement is based on wheeling and dealing in general. But this wasn’t simply a matter of Nancy Pelosi giving Marcia Fudge something to get her on board. Pelosi knows how crucial it is, both for the Democratic Party and for the good of America, to crack down on racist voter suppression. Fudge considers it to be a huge priority, so she’s clearly the right person to lead the charge. And because this is a subcommittee that hasn’t existed for years, Pelosi isn’t taking the job away from someone else to give it to Fudge.

This is precisely what congressional wheeling and dealing should look like. It’s a reminder that Nancy Pelosi knows how to get members of Congress on her side, and she knows how to go about it in the right way. It’s precisely what the Democrats needs in a Speaker of the House – particularly at this crucial time in which Democratic-controlled House committees are about to be tasked with working together to blow open every last one of Donald Trump’s criminal scandals.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: Robert Mueller makes major new filing in the mysterious grand jury proceedings that appear to be against Donald Trump

  •
  •
  •
  •

A few weeks ago, we all became aware that Special Counsel Robert Mueller has spent the past couple months pushing the courts to compel someone to comply with a grand jury subpoena. The person’s identity is top secret, and the legal battle itself has been given unprecedented priority by the courts. Numerous legal experts suspect that Mueller is trying to force Trump himself to testify before a grand jury. In any case, Mueller just made a major new court filing in the matter.

Robert Mueller’s new filing is three thousand words long, and for better or worse, we can’t see what it says, because it’s under seal. But the most important clue here is the timing. Donald Trump keeps telling reporters that he’s finished answering Mueller’s questions in writing, while adding that he hasn’t turned them in yet. The question is why he’d do it this way.

One of the most plausible explanations is that Trump and Mueller were both waiting to see which way the courts rule on this matter. If Trump is ordered to testify before a grand jury, then his written answers may be irrelevant. If the courts side with Trump, then Mueller will have to accept his written answers and nothing more. But here’s the kicker: shortly after Mueller made this filing, Trump’s legal team told ABC News that they’ve preemptively submitted Trump’s written answers to Mueller. This could be a last ditch effort at appeasing the court and preventing it from siding with Mueller.

Earlier this month, thanks to a legal challenge, the long-secret roadmap was revealed for ousting Richard Nixon, which never was carried out because he resigned. That roadmap showed that Special Prosecutor Leon Jaworski was planning to have a grand jury conclude that Nixon should be indicted, and then turn those findings over to the House for impeachment proceedings.

If Robert Mueller is following this roadmap, there is every reason to believe that he’s trying to compel Donald Trump to testify before a grand jury that is then going to turn around and declare that he should be indicted. Trump could try to plead the Fifth, and that may be his current argument in court. But the bottom line is that something big is secretly going on in court right now between Mueller and Trump that could end up dictating how everything else plays out.

It’s also notable that, while we can’t see the contents of Robert Mueller’s new filing today, the sheer length of the document suggests that Robert Mueller is moving forward against Donald Trump full steam ahead, without any meaningful interference from illegitimate Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker. This comes one day after another Mueller court filing, against Roger Stone associate Andrew Miller, suggested the same thing.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: Donald Trump just committed treason with the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia

  •
  •
  •
  •

Donald Trump and his White House released an official statement today which, in short, said that the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia is off the hook for his role in the murder of American journalist Jamal Khashoggi, just because. By now it’s painfully clear that Trump and/or his family are financial puppets of the Crown Prince, and that Trump is taking this position accordingly. Let’s not mince worse: this is treason.

A few of you are already sharpening your pencils, preparing to write in (as usual) and lecture me about how it’s not “treason” unless there’s a formal declaration or war. Put your pencils down. First, you’re wrong; the legal definition of treason only requires that an act of war be committed against the United States, not a declaration of war on either side. So if the state-sponsored assassination of an American journalist and American resident is an act of war, than this does meet the legal definition of treason. Second, this isn’t about legalities.

We all know what treason is in the real-world sense. It’s when a United States citizen goes out of his way to help a foreign enemy sabotage the United States. That is, simply put, what Donald Trump did here. If an average American plotted with the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia to assassinate an American journalist for political and monetary reasons, we’d all agree that the average American in question should never set foot outside a prison cell again. The fact that Trump conspired to commit this treason while masquerading as President of the United States? That makes it even worse.

So yeah, Donald Trump just committed treason with the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia. We still don’t know for sure if Donald Trump was in on this treasonous murder plot ahead of time, or if he entered the treasonous plot after the fact in an attempt at allowing the Crown Prince to get away with it. Either way, Trump’s statement today proves that he’s a traitor – and he belongs in Guantanamo.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Donald Trump | The Guardian: Could a 2100BC sex epic show us how to handle Trump? | Alex Clark

  •

Newly discovered fragments of an ancient text reveal an unusual strategy for dealing with an out-of-control leader

A new bit of The Epic of Gilgamesh, the world’s oldest literary text, has turned up, which is no great news in itself: fragments of clay tablet telling the story of the tyrannical Sumerian king are periodically unearthed, and there is a thrilling expectation that they will continue to be so indefinitely. The narrative has therefore been subject to change, expansion and gap-plugging from its beginnings, in 2100BC, to the Akkadian versions made by copyists (often prisoners of war) in the scriptorium of Nineveh for the pleasure of King Ashurbanipal.

But the latest twist has piqued the interest. Why? Because it is about sex. It tells us that Enkidu – a very hairy man who grazed with gazelles and freed the beasts from hunters’ traps – was civilised after a mammoth Mesopotamian shagging session that lasted not, as previously thought, a mere week, but an entire fortnight. Ouch.
