1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: Donald Trump settles for petty revenge as he circles the drain

Donald Trump, somewhere in his delusional brain, has figured out that it’s over for him. How do we know this? It’s not the fact that he’s having tantrums and throwing things behind the scenes, or that he refused to get out of bed yesterday morning. It’s that he’s now settling for the kind of petty revenge moves that you wouldn’t bother with if you thought you had a future. Two moves in particular today stand out.

First, Donald Trump canceled the White House Christmas party for the press. Sure, he regularly spreads vicious lies about the media, in the hope of distracting from their important reporting on his criminal scandals. That’s evil, but at least it’s a strategy for trying to gain the upper hand. Canceling the party is just stupid. It’s the kind of thing that could motivate reporters to stay up later at night, dig even deeper into his scandals, in the hope of breaking things open. Canceling the party is not something you do if you’re expecting to have to deal with these same reporters after the holidays.

Then Trump did a midday interview on Fox News. He spent a little time offering a dishonest and incoherent argument as to why his campaign finance felonies aren’t crimes. But he put more effort into pushing the accusation, without offering any evidence to support it, that Michael Cohen went to prison to cover for his father-in-law. In other words, Trump doesn’t think he can recover from the damage that Cohen just did to him, so instead he’s going to try to smear and/or destroy Cohen’s family.

There are only two times when petty revenge makes sense. The first is that you’re in such commanding control of everything, you can get away with being petty. The second is when you know you’re circling the drain, and you want to take your adversaries down with you. For Donald Trump, it’s clearly the latter. With his limited time remaining to try to save himself, his actions reveal that he doesn’t think he can save himself.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: Is this the criminal scandal that takes down Melania Trump?

  •
  •
  •
  •

Even as everyone around Donald Trump keeps getting sent to prison, and it’s becoming clear that Donald Trump and his kids will have a hard time avoiding prison, one of the questions in the background has been whether Melania Trump will also end up being taken down. That would require a criminal scandal, of course – and now there finally is one.

Earlier this year it was widely reported that the Donald Trump inauguration committee paid an astonishing $26 million dollars to a friend of Melania Trump for “event production services.” This amounted to roughly one-fourth of the $107 million that was raised for the inauguration in total. This was clearly corrupt in the moral sense, but at the time it seemed to be just that. Now, as it turns out, the overall Trump inauguration is being investigated as a criminal financial scandal.

The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday that the Southern District of New York is investigating both where the Trump inauguration money came from and where it went. The SDNY also has a tape of Melania’s friend calling Michael Cohen and expressing concern over the money flow. Harry Litman, former U.S. Attorney and former Deputy Assistant Attorney General, appeared on MSNBC on Thursday night and stated his view that based on what the WSJ reported, Melania could indeed be facing criminal exposure over this.

There are some key questions that must be answered. Did Melania Trump personally push for her friend to be paid $26 million for services that didn’t appear to be worth nearly that much? Did the money come from outside the United States, which would be illegal? If so, did Melania know that the money came from outside the U.S.? The SDNY will have to answer these questions with its investigation. But it’s fascinating that a former high ranking DOJ official thinks Melania may end up facing criminal exposure here.

Michael Cohen did not have a good day yesterday. But no headline captured the discontent of Trump’s former personal lawyer, sentenced to three years in prison for financial crimes and lying to Congress, quite as well as this courtroom sketch.

His despairing eyes and deep frown lines caught the attention of Stephen Colbert, who called it the “saddest” of all the images we’ve seen of Cohen’s “slow descent into finding out what the law is”.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: SDNY drops hint that it has recordings of Donald Trump incriminating himself

  •
  •
  •
  •

The investigation and prosecution of Donald Trump’s lifelong crime spree has reached the stage where new revelations are now dropping by the hour – and that’s not by accident. It’s clear that Robert Mueller, the SDNY, the state of New York, and House Democrats are pushing out this information in coordinated fashion, in order to lay the groundwork for Trump’s ouster. Just in the past couple hours, everything has changed.

First came Maria Butina’s guilty plea in court, which cements her cooperating plea deal, which we all expected to happen today. But as it turns out, that was just the beginning of the day’s bombshells. Immediately after Donald Trump appeared on Fox News and insisted that he didn’t instruct Michael Cohen to make felony payoffs during the election, someone leaked to NBC News that Trump was in fact in the room while Cohen and David Pecker were plotting this felony. Then came more.

Less than an hour later, someone leaked to the Wall Street Journal that the SDNY is investigating the suspicious money trail coming in and out of the Trump inauguration committee. This story included the remarkable revelation that part of the evidence is a conversation that Michael Cohen recorded with an inauguration planner. This can’t be a coincidence.

Prosecutors are publicly revealing that they have Cohen tapes exposing certain Trump regime crimes, just after they revealed that they have proof Trump was in the room with Cohen and Pecker. The SDNY appears to be sending a strong hint to Donald Trump that they have Cohen recordings of him in the room with Cohen and Pecker. This would be a smoking gun – and the SDNY wants Trump to know they have it.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: “His goose is cooked” – Richard Painter talks Donald Trump plea deal and resignation

  •
  •
  •
  •

In the six days since the SDNY formally accused Donald Trump of two felonies, it’s become clear that he’ll be indicted and arrested the minute he’s no longer president. It’s also clear that his kids will be arrested while he’s still in office. Palmer Report has explained that this boxes Trump in, to where his only shot at criminal leniency is to negotiate a resignation deal. Now a legal expert is saying the same thing, only more forcefully.

Former White House ethics lawyer Richard Painter appeared on MSNBC and spelled it out like this: “Donald Trump is in serious trouble. His lawyers ought to be telling him to negotiate a plea deal. It’s time to negotiate a comprehensive plea deal for Donald Trump and his family members. Include federal and state charges. Reduced charges in exchange for his resignation.” Then he added, “It’s quite clear his goose is cooked here.”

This is, logically speaking, probably the only way this can end. For all his various psychological failings and delusions, every time he’s figured out that his business schemes have failed, and that he has no other way forward, he’s negotiated bankruptcy. While Trump is clearly slipping in the cognitive department, there is every reason to expect that – for all his bluster – he can be convinced to cut a resignation plea deal.

Donald Trump knows he can’t stop the legal process from closing in on him and his family, or he’d be making moves to try to stop it. Instead he’s just blustering, which means he knows he has no winning way out of this. In the end, the question will be how much prison time and asset forfeiture he’s willing to agree to as part of his resignation deal. If prosecutors are looking to jolt Trump into understanding that he’s lost and it’s over, arresting one of his kids would be the next logical step.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Donald Trump | The Guardian: US investigates whether Trump’s inaugural cash was spent improperly – report

  •

Legal woes mount as NBC also reports Trump was present for talks over National Enquirer payments

Donald Trump’s inaugural committee, which managed the $107m celebrations in Washington to mark the start of his presidency in 2017, has become the latest focus of federal prosecutors who, according to the Wall Street Journal, are now investigating whether the money was properly spent.

The Journal reports that Manhattan-based prosecutors are in the “early stages” of a criminal investigation into how the record sum for such a presidential inauguration was used, as well as whether huge donations were made in return for easy access to the Trump administration as it entered power. The newspaper says that were evidence found of improper spending or quid pro quo, it could amount to a criminal violation of US anti-corruption laws.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: SDNY targets Donald Trump’s family

  •
  •
  •
  •

We saw it coming earlier in the week. It started with the mention of Trump Organization “Executive 2” being criminally implicated in an SDNY court filing in relation to the Trump-Cohen hush money conspiracy. It wasn’t difficult to parse that this individual had to be one of Donald Trump’s three most prominent kids, because there were no other Trump Organization executives. Now the SDNY is pushing the issue much harder.

This evening MSNBC flashed this news across the chyron: “Feds looking at whether Trump Org. execs were involved in payments to women.” Apart from Donald Trump, the only people who were Trump Organization executives at the time of these payments were Donald Trump Jr, Eric Trump, and Ivanka Trump. The source of this news flash could only be SDNY itself. So what’s happening here?

The SDNY has been taking incremental steps to make clear to Donald Trump that it’s targeting his family. The previous filing told Trump that the Feds knew at least one of his kids was involved in the felonious hush money. Now it’s being explicitly stated that one or more of his kids is being specifically targeted. Of course Trump knows which kid or kids were involved, because he gave the order to begin with. So now Trump knows that there’s a very finite amount of time before SDNY starts arresting his family.

So why telegraph this, as opposed to employing the element of surprise? The point isn’t simply to lock up Donald Trump’s kids, although they’ll certainly end up in front of a judge and jury eventually. The point here is to get Trump to realize that his illegitimate presidency is over and he has to swiftly resign and lose a lot, or else he’ll lose everything. Look for SDNY to keep zeroing in on Trump’s kids in the coming hours and days.
