1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: Donald Trump just had his “I am not a crook” moment – and he blew it

It was November 17, 1973, when then president Richard Nixon disavowed any involvement in the Watergate scandal with the now infamous invocation, “I am not a crook.” In like manner on Thursday Donald Trump had his own “I am not a crook” moment, when he tweeted, “I never directed Michael Cohen to break the law.” Trump’s quote, to be sure, is hardly as memorable as Nixon’s, but it is every bit as disingenuous.

Nixon, like Trump, was also exasperated by the press. The reporting in the Watergate Era was thin on the ground for anything other than Watergate itself, even when the news was justifiably favorable for Nixon. After all, it was Nixon who deftly parlayed his anti-communist credentials in a tightrope walk that opened China and built an historic detente with the Soviet Union. And it was Nixon who presided over the end of the Vietnam war.

So it was with an eerily Nixonian importunity when Thursday Trump whined to Fox News, “I think it’s amazing, because I only get bad news. I only get bad stories. You look at the papers, it’s all nonsense.” Of course, Trump doesn’t have the long list of achievements Nixon had.

Unlike Nixon, Trump has in fact very few accomplishments to crow about at all, and none that required any real talent from him. The few achievements his administration can boast of are largely hijacked from the undertakings of others. The two SCOTUS candidates were confirmed principally due to the partisan efforts and perfidy of the Republican Senate. His tax scam for the wealthy was written and passed by the Republican majority in the House.

All other Donald Trump “achievements” are good old fashioned lies. Despite his claims to the contrary, there is no wall. The good economic and unemployment figures are holdovers from the spectacular achievements of the Obama era. It would not be unfair to think of Trump in terms of Nixon, provided it’s a tawdry, lazy, far less intelligent and far more criminal version of Nixon. Apt or not, one comparison will be inevitable. Like Nixon’s, Trump’s presidency will end in disgrace and infamy.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: FBI just conducted a second raid against Donald Trump’s former tax attorney

  •
  •
  •
  •

Palmer Report previously reported that Edward Burke’s offices had been raided by the FBI in late November. At that time we didn’t have any conclusive evidence that the raids were connected or related in any way to Burke’s having spent several years serving as “President” Donald Trump’s tax attorney in connection with the Trump Tower Chicago – and we still don’t. But we do have important new information about the raid.

Yesterday the FBI conducted a second raid of the Chicago alderman’s offices after having reportedly confiscated Burke’s phone. Chicago television reporter Carol Marin tweeted on Thursday: “NBC5 confirms new FBI raid of [Alderman] Ed Burke’s Finance Committee at City Hall!”

We still don’t know what is being investigated or what potential trouble Alderman Burke faces, or whether it is related to Trump in any way. Such a followup raid is not usual, and to do so, the FBI would have likely needed a second warrant to conduct the second raid. Burke represented Trump (and many other clients) for years, specializing in property tax assessments and trying to obtain reductions. Burke withdrew his representation of Trump earlier in the year based on “irreconcilable differences.”

As noted, there may be no direct connection to Donald Trump in any of this FBI activity against Burke. But like most news coming out these days, it does not bode well for Trump, because if Burke has serious trouble he is facing, he could trade what he knows about Trump in order to bargain with the prosecutors.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: A few more details surface about Robert Mueller’s mystery grand jury court hearing today

  •
  •
  •
  •

This morning a court hearing took place in the ongoing, yet super secret, grand jury proceedings that have long appeared to involve Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s team and their investigation into Donald Trump’s criminal scandals. Security was so tight for these proceedings that reporters on site said the entire floor was cleared beforehand. But now a few details have surfaced about the proceedings.

This sentence from CNN should scare the crap out of whoever is being targeted: “About 10 minutes after the court activity appeared to wrap for the day, a black Justice Department car rolled into Mueller’s office building, bringing attorneys including [Michael] Dreeben and Zainab Ahmad back to their home base.” Dreeben is Mueller’s top appellate court attorney, which makes sense, as this is an appeals court case. Ahmad is another matter.

When Robert Mueller assembled his team, he chose prosecutors who have varying specialties, in order to pursue the various alleged crimes involved. Zainab Ahmad is known for her background in prosecuting cases involving cyber crime and – get this – terrorism. Here’s the thing. This case is being treated as such a big deal by the court, and such a top secret, it has to involve a target who is a huge prosecutorial priority for the United States. That makes for a rather short list.

Various observers have floated a few theories, all of them valid. Is Robert Mueller attempting to unseal a grand jury indictment against Donald Trump or Mike Pence? Is he seeking an arrest warrant for one of Trump’s kids? Then again, considering the focus on cyber terrorism, is Mueller attempting to extradite Julian Assange based on an existing sealed indictment? Anything short of something this big, and the DC Court of Appeals wouldn’t be bending over backward like this.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: Donald Trump goes berserk after everyone laughs at him for not being able to find anyone better than Mick Mulvaney

  •
  •
  •
  •

Donald Trump’s search for a new White House Chief of staff has been a chaotic and humiliating process, which has seen him getting turned down by less and less qualified candidates. Tonight, Trump finally convinced right wing bottom feeder Mick Mulvaney to be his acting Chief of Staff, meaning no one wanted the job. After everyone laughed at the announcement, Trump promptly went off the deep end.

What’s remarkable is that Donald Trump had previously offered the job to Mick Mulvaney, who turned it down. Trump has clearly gone back and begged Mulvaney to take the gig on a temporary basis, to buy him more time to try to find a permanent replacement. When you can’t even get the ‘I hate Meals on Wheels’ guy to sign on to captain your sinking ship, you’re in trouble – and everyone knows it.

After the news broke and everyone chuckled accordingly, Donald Trump ended up tweeting “For the record, there were MANY people who wanted to be the White House Chief of Staff. Mick M will do a GREAT job!” There are a couple of interesting takeaways from this surreal tweet. First, it’s clear that Trump is so confused by how to spell “Mulvaney” he wasn’t even willing to give it a try.

Second, no one can even figure out who these other supposed candidates are supposed to be. Chris Christie publicly turned down the job earlier today. Nick Ayers turned him down. Mark Meadows turned him down. Rick Santorum turned him down. Newt Gingrich apparently turned him down. We know that there was no one who wanted to take the job, or else Trump wouldn’t have had to ask Mulvaney to temporarily do double duty on an acting basis.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: Exposed: Ivanka Trump at center of Trump inauguration criminal scandal

  •
  •
  •
  •

Yesterday we learned that federal prosecutors are criminally investigating the money trail from Donald Trump’s inauguration. That report from the Wall Street Journal was focused primarily on where the donations came from and where they went. Now we’re learning that Ivanka Trump was at the center of that scandal – and it’s ugly.

ProPublica and WNYC have obtained internal emails which reveal that the Trump inaugural committee used donations to pay for hotel rooms at the Trump-owned hotel in Washington DC, a violation of the Emoluments Clause. But it gets worse. Much worse. The Trump hotel was wildly overcharging the Trump inaugural committee for the rooms. It got bad enough that a top Trump inauguration planner emailed Ivanka Trump to express concern about the price gouging ending up being audited.

So how bad is this? ProPublica thinks the Trump hotel, which is owned by the Trump Organization and thus owned by the Trump family, may have violated tax laws by charging the inauguration more than the going rate. Ivanka Trump was an official at the Trump Organization at the time, making her legally responsible for the matter. Her rep is claiming that Ivanka intervened and demanded that a fair rate be charged. But the emails obtained by ProPublica don’t offer any hint of this, and Ivanka’s people aren’t bothering to provide any evidence of it either.

This alone does not prove that Ivanka Trump committed a crime. But it does prove that someone in the Trump Organization was trying to commit a crime, and it proves that Ivanka Trump knew it was happening. Trump Organization CFO Allen Weisselberg has been granted an immunity deal in the SDNY investigation. This suggests that whatever went on, prosecutors already know about it.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: Donald Trump scrapes the bottom of the Chief of Staff barrel, finds Mick Mulvaney underneath it

  •
  •
  •
  •

Donald Trump just finished bragging that he had a long list of people lined up who wanted to be his new White House Chief of Staff, including some recognizable names. It looks like they all turned him down, because Trump ended up scraping as far toward the bottom of the barrel as anyone can go – and even the person who took the job is declining to keep it.

If you thought Donald Trump was desperate when it surfaced that he was considering the unpopular Chris Christie for the job, things got even more humiliating when Christie made a point of publicly taking himself out of the running today. But that wasn’t because Trump had decided to give the job to someone else. We know this, because he ended up naming Mick Mulvaney as his new acting Chief of Staff. That’s right, acting.

Mick Mulvaney is the obscure White House budget director who’s best known for a weird press conference in which he attacked Meals on Wheels. Trump had to go that low to find someone. But it gets worse. Trump previously offered Mulvaney the job, and he turned it down. So now Trump has had to cajole Mulvaney into temporarily taking a job he doesn’t want.

This means Donald Trump will go into the new year with no White House Chief of Staff, as John Kelly heads for the hills and Mick Mulvaney temporarily does double duty, with no apparent prospects for being able to find anyone to permanently take the job. Then again, with the felony counts against Trump adding up, how far into the new year will he last anyway?
