1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: Donald Trump and Rudy Giuliani are lost in the weeds as they circle the drain

This week Michael Flynn made the surprise move of accusing former FBI agent Peter Strzok of having essentially tricked him into lying. It’s a desperate move by Flynn aimed at ensuring that the judge doesn’t give him any prison time, and various legal experts believe it could work against him. It’s also handed a talking point to Donald Trump and Rudy Giuliani, who are naturally screwing up the whole thing.

Trump and Rudy are now trying to spin a fictional version of events in which Robert Mueller couldn’t nail Michael Flynn for anything but lying to the FBI, and he recommended a lenient sentence because Strzok screwed that up. Back in the real world, Flynn was facing charges along the lines of espionage, treason, and conspiracy to commit kidnapping. The man is one of the worst criminals in American history. But because he gave up evidence that will take down Donald Trump, the worst criminal in American history, he was given a free pass.

Once Mueller begins rolling out the evidence that Flynn provided against Trump and others, which should be fairly soon, the argument currently being made by Trump and Rudy will look asinine. Further, Flynn’s sentencing memo reveals that Trump committed felony obstruction of justice by targeting and harassing Strzok because he was the first FBI agent to figure out that the Trump-Russia scandal existed. So the more Trump and Rudy harp on Strzok now, the worse it’ll backfire on them.

Not only are Donald Trump and Rudy Giuliani relying on one of the most idiotic defense strategies of all time, they’re doing it with what could be charitably described as fading cognitive abilities. There are a lot of people who don’t know how to spell Peter Strzok’s name. But when your strategy for staying out of prison is based on publicly attacking him, you’d think you’d take a moment to learn the spelling – or perhaps not.

Rudy Giuliani has made six mentions on Twitter this week of someone named “Stroyk” instead of Peter Strzok. Donald Trump seems to be afraid to even try, as he’s now reduced to referring to him as “Peter S.” This would be like making an argument that Donald Trump is a criminal, but repeatedly and accidentally referring to him as “Ronald Turnip.”

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: Now the New Jersey Attorney General is going after Donald Trump

  •
  •
  •
  •

Back when the race for Governor of New Jersey was playing out a year ago, Palmer Report pointed out that the results could end up having an impact on the ongoing criminal investigations into Donald Trump, his family, and his businesses. Why? The Governor gets to appoint the Attorney General of New Jersey, and sure enough, new Democratic Governor Phil Murphy has appointed someone who’s now investigating Trump.

The New Jersey Attorney General’s office is now investigating claims of “widespread harassment and immigration fraud” at Donald Trump’s golf property in Bedminster, according to a new report from the New York Daily News. Suffice it to say that if New Jersey had elected a Republican Governor, the New Jersey Attorney General would probably not be pursuing this. So where’s it going?

At the least, it’s a black eye for Donald Trump. Several of his current and former golf resort employees are alleging “racially-charged mistreatment” which could end up being a civil matter. But here’s the thing: each of these employees is either currently an undocumented immigrant, or was one at the time the harassment took place. In other words, Trump was illegally hiring undocumented immigrants, making this a potentially criminal matter.

We’ll see where this goes. But at a time when incoming New York Attorney General Tish James is vowing to criminally pursue Donald Trump on every level possible, now the New Jersey Attorney General is piling on as well. It should be noted that since taking office, Trump has spent a significant amount of time at the Bedminster property, which could make it harder to argue that he wasn’t aware of the harassment and fraud going on at his property.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: Mike Pence caught up in Trump inauguration fundraising criminal scandal

  •
  •
  •
  •

Now that Donald Trump has a new and escalating criminal scandal just about every day, it can be tricky to parse them all in real time. Recently we all learned that Trump’s inaugural committee fundraising is being criminally investigated, both in terms of where the money came from, and where it went. Now it turns out Mike Pence is caught smack in the middle of the scandal.

Donald Trump originally put Chris Christie in charge of the transition, but then quickly fired him and replaced him with Mike Pence. Various supposed explanations have surfaced for this, but none of them have ever been confirmed. Here’s the thing. According to the Michael Lewis book The Fifth Risk, as unearthed by Daily Kos, it turns out Trump’s decision to fire Christie had something to do with Trump’s desire to pocket the money. Check out this rather profane passage from the book:

Trump was apoplectic, actually yelling, You’re stealing my money! You’re stealing my fucking money! What the fuck is this?? Seeing Bannon, Trump turned on him and screamed, Why are you letting him steal my fucking money? Bannon and Christie together set out to explain to Trump federal law. […] To which Trump replied, Fuck the law. I don’t give a fuck about the law. I want my fucking money. Bannon and Christie tried to explain that Trump couldn’t have both his money and a transition.

Follow the logic here. Donald Trump fired Chris Christie as the head of the transition team, because Christie wouldn’t let him simply steal the money. Trump then decided to put Mike Pence in his place, and then allegedly proceeded to steal the money. Did Trump think Pence was too stupid to realize the money was being stolen? Or did Trump put Pence in charge because he knew Pence would help him steal the money? Pence looks dirtier by the minute.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: Maria Butina is already preparing to testify for the Trump-Russia grand jury

  •
  •
  •
  •

It was just a couple days ago that Russian spy Maria Butina pleaded guilty and formalized a full cooperation deal with federal prosecutors. In a sign of just how important her role is in unraveling the Trump-Russia scandal, according to NPR, the Feds are already preparing to have her testify to the grand jury. The question, of course, is who all she’s going to sell out – and what that’ll mean for the Trump-Russia probe.

This week’s Maria Butina court filings only clearly identify two people. One is Russian banker Alexander Torshin, a close ally of Vladimir Putin, who mysteriously disappeared just as Butina’s deal was being negotiated. The Feds could be looking to indict him from afar in order to establish a criminal conspiracy which can then be expanded to include Americans. But the more likely initial target is the other person named in the filings, Republican operative Paul Erickson, who is (or was) Butina’s boyfriend.

Erickson may not sound like a crucial target, but that’s only because most of the public hasn’t heard of him. He’s a behind the scenes guy who has run campaigns for Republican candidates and other similar roles. The filings allege that Erickson was serving as a conduit between the Kremlin, the NRA, and the Republican Party. Butina’s testimony against Erickson could leave him with no choice but to cut a plea deal of his own, and he would have to give up everyone in the GOP and NRA who was knowingly working with the Kremlin through his channels.

It’s still not clear how Maria Butina connects back to Donald Trump and his campaign. For instance the NRA, which claims to be broke, somehow had $30 million to spend on pro-Trump advertisements during the 2016 election. Butina also had social interactions with multiple big name Republicans including Scott Walker, John Bolton, and Dana Rohrabacher. What went on between them? Did they know she was a Russian spy? We’ll find out soon enough.
