“President” Donald Trump has been busy spouting off nonsense about how Michael Flynn is being punished for a “process crime” and that it is all because the FBI somehow convinced Flynn that he was lying. Today’s news that two ex-Flynn associates have been indicted should pop that “fake news” balloon.
CNN and other real news outlets are reporting that Bijan Rafiekian and Kamil Alptekin have been charged with conspiracy as well as acting as agents of a foreign government. Both of these men are former business associates of Flynn. Their charges are related to the attempts to have a Turkish cleric extradited.
Trump’s gang of sycophants, including Congressman Devin “Just Say Nyet” Nunes and “Judge” Jeanine Pirro, have been carrying Trump’s water on this issue, arguing that Flynn somehow was pressured and cajoled into cooperating in the Special Counsel investigation. Washington Post reporter Aaron Blake made it clear this all debunks the conspiracy theories that Trump and his posse have been trying to sell, writing: “The indictment is further evidence that the idea Flynn was just some guy going about his business who waltzed into an FBI trap is fanciful. It implicates his own eponymous business in an illegal lobbying operation.”
What all of this means for Flynn remains unclear, but the latest news shows that like everything that has come out of the special investigation to date, it is not a “nothing sandwich” or a “hoax.” Trump had tweeted this about Flynn: “They gave General Flynn a great deal because they were embarrassed by the way he was treated – the FBI said he didn’t lie and they overrode the FBI. They want to scare everybody into making up stories that are not true by catching them in the smallest of misstatements. Sad! WITCH HUNT!” Trump as always is wrong, and there’s more to come on what this means for Trump and for Flynn.
