1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: Don’t mess with Nancy Pelosi

We’re now just hours away from Nancy Pelosi officially becoming Speaker of the House. It now feels like such an obvious thing, it’s easy to forget that just a month ago, there was a concerted effort from moderate Democrats to try to block her from becoming Speaker. Not only has she overcome that, she’s won over some of the people who spearheaded that effort against her.

Congressman Tim Ryan, a moderate Democrat from Ohio, has been trying to replace Nancy Pelosi as the Democratic leader in the House since 2017. Ryan was one of the ringleaders behind last month’s effort to install someone – anyone – as Speaker instead of Pelosi. But now Tim Ryan is now emphatically singing Pelosi’s praises, appearing on MSNBC today just to drive his point home about how much he now supports Pelosi. How did this happen?

In short, Nancy Pelosi is just that good when it comes to negotiating things and pulling her party together. That’s half the battle when it comes to the job of Speaker of the House. The other half the battle consists of outmaneuvering the opposing party. We saw Pelosi stymie George W. Bush during his final two years. More recently we saw Pelosi completely own Donald Trump in front of the television cameras during their White House showdown.

Now we get to see what Nancy Pelosi can do once she officially gets the gavel back in her hand tomorrow, with a slew of Democratic heavyweights set to take over every House committee this week, and a clear public mandate giving the Democrats the go-ahead to go after Donald Trump with all their might. You don’t mess with Nancy Pelosi. Everyone who takes her on ends up figuring that out eventually.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: Donald Trump hits the wall

Donald Trump gambled that he could somehow get Congress to fund his border wall by forcing a government shutdown during the transition period. He’s now officially lost that gamble. As of Thursday morning, the transition period is over. Trump didn’t get his wall. He’s failed to generate public support for a wall, and he’s failed to convince most Americans that the shutdown is the fault of the Democrats. Now he’s hit the proverbial wall, and he knows it.

Not that he’s going to admit it, of course. Even as the Democrats formally take control of the House tomorrow, and Nancy Pelosi becomes Speaker of the House, she and her party are facing virtually no public pressure at all to give in to Trump’s wall demands. In fact they’ll immediately pass legislation to reopen the government with no wall funding, and assuming the Senate sticks to its current position, Trump will have to decide whether he wants to use a veto to force the government to remain closed.

Trump seems to know he’s lost his gambit. Instead of trying to pretend he’s won his fight against the Democrats, he’s reverting to his earlier lies: “Mexico is paying for the Wall through the new USMCA Trade Deal. Much of the Wall has already been fully renovated or built. We have done a lot of work. $5.6 Billion Dollars that House has approved is very little in comparison to the benefits of National Security. Quick payback!”

Really? Donald Trump still expects anyone outside of his clown show base to believe that Mexico is somehow paying for the wall even as he’s demanding that the Democrats pay for the wall? Now the wall has already been renovated? Does anyone even know what that means? Trump certainly doesn’t. He’s hit the wall – or perhaps he’s hit a steel slat barrier.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: Mitt Romney has already caved to Donald Trump after just one day

Yesterday, incoming Republican Senator Mitt Romney turned a lot of heads when he vowed to stand up against Donald Trump’s racism and anti-immigrant stance at every turn. Earlier today, Palmer Report predicted that Romney would end up caving to Trump, because Romney is a puppet of the conservative billionaires who control the Republican Party, and in turn, the party is under Trump’s control. We just didn’t know he’d cave this quickly.

Just one day after Mitt Romney published his anti-Trump op-ed, he appeared on CNN this afternoon with host Jake Tapper. During the interview, Romney flatly stated that he supports Donald Trump’s border wall. Well, there goes that. Romney vowed to push back against anything Trump did that was racist or anti-immigrant, yet he’s immediately caving on the centerpiece of Trump’s racist and anti-immigrant agenda.

It’s not just that Mitt Romney is a corrupt, weak-willed flip flopper, though he is in fact all of these things. It’s that Romney is a party line kind of guy. The current Republican Party leadership wants to give Donald Trump his border wall, so Romney is automatically for it. It’s a reminder that no one can get anywhere in the GOP these days by defying the party’s highly centralized power base.

This is also a reminder that, while Mitt Romney is polite and eloquent, he is a polite and eloquent bigot. We saw this during the 2016 presidential election, when Romney pushed an extremist anti-gay agenda while trying to obscure his bigotry by using gentle language. Now Romney is very politely endorsing Donald Trump’s racist wall. It’s not that Romney is just like Trump; he’s not. It’s that Romney is just like Mike Pence, which on some level makes him scarier.
