1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: After Nancy Pelosi takes power, Donald Trump has bizarre Mr. Pillsbury meltdown

Nancy Pelosi officially became Speaker of the House today, as the Democrats took control of the House of Representatives. Donald Trump still hasn’t said much about today’s events, apart from a brief and meek appearance in the White House briefing room which saw him awkwardly heaping praise on Pelosi. Now Trump is finally melting down, but it’s not about Pelosi. Instead it’s about Trump’s old pal Mr. Pillsbury.

Back when Donald Trump infamously held a press conference involving an attack on George Washington and a reference to “Mr. Kurd,” he also referenced “Mr. Pillsbury.” The phrasing and context led a lot of people to believe that Trump was either making up a fake person or referencing the Pillsbury Dough Boy, but as it turns out, Mr. Pillsbury is a real person – and Trump has once again brought him back into the fold.

Michael Pillsbury is an American political operative who sometimes appears on Fox News in order to kiss up to Donald Trump. If his goal is to goad Trump into giving him free publicity, it’s working. This evening Trump launched into a bizarre meltdown which included this quote from Mr. Pillsbury: “They have the motive of making the President look bad – instead of President Trump being portrayed as a HERO. The first President to take China on, it’s 20 years overdue President Trump deserves a lot of credit, but again, you have the anti-Trump people who are not going to give him a lot of credit.”

This comes even as the stock market continues to plummet as a direct result of Donald Trump’s failed trade war against China, and Apple now says its sales will fail to meet expectations this quarter as a result of Trump’s failed tariffs. Trump can’t bring himself to attack Nancy Pelosi. Instead he’s apparently lying in bed, watching Fox News, and ranting about Mr. Pillsbury.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: Donald Trump may have just Schitt himself

Donald Trump may have “Schitt” himself today. Hours into the 116th Congress, Trump already appears to be going down for the count. Nancy Pelosi won the contest easily for Speaker of the House, and she made history by becoming the first and second woman to be Speaker. She also is one of the few people who has now been Speaker on two occasions, being the sixth. The last to have more than one term, Sam Rayburn, is one of the best. Another, Henry Clay, is known for his body of work as Speaker.

After Pelosi was sworn in, Adam Schiff officially took over the House Intelligence Committee. Let the investigations begin, and they will.
Democrats in the House promised to do their job duties as spelled out by the United States Constitution, and accordingly the Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee posted a job advertisement for “an attorney with several years of investigative or litigation experience.”

Representative Steve Cohen introduced two Constitutional amendments this evening, one to end the electoral college, and the other to prevent a president from pardoning himself or his family. For now, those amendments are not likely to go anywhere, but it is a warning to Trump that the game has changed and a new day is afoot.

Lest Trump believe he can blame his government shutdown on the Democrats, that notion too is falling apart. GOP Senators Cory Gardner and Susan Collins are revealing their desire to reopen the government without any fall wall funding, as both are up in 2020. In the House, Trump is not doing much winning on the efforts to reopen government. A six-bill passage with no wall funding passed by a vote of 241-190, with a short-term Homeland Security funding bill passing 239-192, with multiple Republicans voting for each item. Gardner advocated for the passage of the continuing resolution that the Senate had passed just before the shutdown.

Hours into the new Congress and there are cracks in the “Nyet Wall” because Republicans know that pleasing and placating Donald Trump could now come at the expense of the public turning on them and voting them out in two years. Sleep tight, Trumpy, and let the “Dem bugs” bite.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: There’s still a Kremlin operative in the Trump regime acting as a go-between for Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin

On Thursday evening, Rachel Maddow used her MSNBC show to connect a fascinating series of dots which revealed that Donald Trump is using decades-old Kremlin propaganda talking points about Afghanistan, and that Trump could only have gotten those talking points from the Kremlin. It was a brilliant piece of reporting, but Maddow left one question unasked: how is Putin still getting these talking points to Trump?

It’s not difficult to figure out how Vladimir Putin could have been feeding instructions to Donald Trump in the earlier days of the Trump White House. The likes of Paul Manafort and Michael Flynn were widely suspected of being Kremlin assets, but they hadn’t yet been indicted or arrested, and it’s easy to imagine that they could still have been acting as go-betweens to get Putin’s marching orders to Trump. But those folks have all been taken off the table. So who’s the go-between these days?

Donald Trump is now so cut off from the outside world, it pretty much has to be someone who’s officially in his administration. But at this point there are almost no White House officials left. There is every reason to have a very low opinion of the likes of Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Mick Mulvaney, and Kellyanne Conway, but there is no reason to suspect they’re Kremlin assets. So who is it?

Donald Trump’s National Security Adviser John Bolton is smack in the middle of the Trump-Russia scandal, thanks to his financial ties to Cambridge Analytica and his personal ties to Maria Butina. Is Putin using Bolton to get talking points to Trump? If it’s not Bolton, who else is left? Perhaps a member of Trump’s family? It’s got to be someone. Donald Trump isn’t just figuring out on his own that he’s supposed to pull out of Afghanistan while quoting decades-old Kremlin propaganda that has never been embraced anywhere on the American political spectrum. He still has a Kremlin go-between.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: Arrest of American “spy” in Russia takes surreal turn

Is Paul Whelan really an American spy who was caught snooping around in Russia, as Vladimir Putin claims? We have no idea. We’re certainly not willing to take Putin’s word for it. But even as Russia continues to detain Whelan, the saga keeps getting stranger. It seems obvious that Putin is hoping to trade Whelan to the U.S. in exchange for Maria Butina or some other Russian asset. But Whelan’s role in this just became rather strange.

Any cursory search of Paul Whelan’s background reveals that he’s a big fan of Donald Trump, as well as a big fan of Russia, and he appears to have done significant contracting work involving Russia. But even accounting for all of that, this new statement from Whelan about a potential prisoner exchange is more than a bit over the top: “I myself hope that we can rescue and bring home one Russian soul.” Wait, what?

Whelan doesn’t sound like an innocent American who’s been wrongly arrested by the Russian government for political purposes. He sounds like a Russian asset. It’s worth keeping in mind that he’s currently in custody, and that Russia doesn’t exactly have a reputation for treating its prisoners appropriately. So it’s possible he’s being coerced into saying this. But what if he’s not?

Paul Whelan has also hired a Russian attorney who represents Russian suspects. At this point we have to at least ask if it’s possible that Whelan is in on this with Russia, and that he helped choreograph his own arrest in order to give Putin leverage to get a Russian asset back in return. We’re not accusing Whelan of this; it’s just that based on his words, if he’s not being coerced, it would seemingly be the only other logical explanation.
