1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: Donald Trump’s swamp now has a Confederacy scandal too

“President” Donald Trump sits and stews and blames the Democrats for the shutdown, gloating that many of the employees that are not being paid, if not most of them, are Democrats. This latter assertion is incorrect, and one example is federal judges, where funding runs out next Friday, and a majority of those judges are Republican-appointed, including approximately 20% of them by Trump himself.

Today, another one of Trump’s appointees lied. Yes, unlike with most of the mainstream media, the four-letter word – “lies” – is used here at Palmer Report. In a report by CNN, it appears that Trump’s Veterans Affairs Secretary, Robert Wilkie, who has denied paying any heed to the Mar-A-Lago crowd that has tried to influence VA policies, failed to disclose speeches he gave to a chapter of the Sons of Confederate Veterans in 2009, and earlier had praised Confederate President Jefferson Davis in a speech he gave at the U.S. Capitol.

Wilkie had been a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. However, notwithstanding the ugly nature of these connections, the bottom line is that Wilkie failed in his requirement to disclose “his public statements, published materials and memberships he held in organizations.” A spokesman for Wilkie gave some mealy-mouthed response about Wilkie’s “best recollection” and that he stopped when the “issue became divisive.”

Wilkie must be a vampire or time traveler, because last anyone checked, Confederate group membership and praise for Davis has been out of style for at least one hundred years. This is what is meant by the term “deplorables” and it applies. Wilkie was listed not very long ago as still being a member. And he left it off his form, just as so many in Trump’s orbit left their interactions with the Russians off their resumes and disclosures. Wilkie’s spokesman also noted that Wilkie had fully disclosed the ties he had to the Sons of Confederate Veterans. However, at best, he misled the Senate.

Wilkie’s 1995 speech referred to Jefferson Davis as a “martyr to ‘The Lost Cause’” and continued, “We can’t surrender American history to an enforced political orthodoxy dictated to our children by attention-starved politicians, street corner demagogues, and tenured campus radicals.” He also referred to abolitionists “as mendacious as the Jacobins of Revolutionary France” and those who funded John Brown’s raid at Harper Ferry as “enemies of liberty.” One is very surprised that Wilkie was not prouder of these statements and speeches and views, and astonished he did not list them in his disclosures. Not.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: Donald Trump’s emergency Camp David meeting has already turned into a bizarre debacle

  •
  •
  •
  •

Donald Trump is heading to Camp David on Sunday, a place he only ever slinks off to when his back is particularly against the wall, and he feels the need to hold an all-hands emergency meeting with his underlings. The trouble: this time around, it doesn’t appear Trump will actually be meeting with anyone.

Trump posted this tweet on Saturday evening: “Will be going to Camp David tomorrow morning for meetings on Border Security and many other topics with White House senior staff.” Okay, that’s all well and good. But there don’t appear to be any White House senior staff involved. The AP is reporting that the likes of Mike Pence, Kirstjen Nielsen, and Jared Kushner won’t be there.

Are there any other “White House senior staff” even left at this point? The only other people who even vaguely fit the description are Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who doesn’t participate in policy meetings, Kellyanne Conway, who has never had any discernible role, and Mick Mulvaney, who now has roughly seventeen job titles.

So what is this meeting, exactly? It sounds like Donald Trump, Mick Mulvaney, the twin brother of Mick Mulvaney, and the ghost of Mick Mulvaney are going to sit around Camp David and stare at a potted plant while pretending to come up with a plan to magically get their imaginary border wall funded. Come to think of it, there’s no confirmation that Mulvaney will even be there, either. This just keeps getting stranger.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: Everyone piles on after Donald Trump has idiotic meltdown

  •
  •
  •
  •

Donald Trump has failed in his effort to convince Americans that his racist border wall is necessary. He’s failed to convince Americans that his government shutdown is necessary, or that his shutdown is somehow the fault of the Democrats. He’s failed to stop Robert Mueller from closing in on him. He’s failed to stop Democrats from taking control of the House. So what does the biggest failure in American history do for an encore? An idiotic meltdown, of course.

After a few weird tweets patting himself on the back for no apparent reason, Donald Trump finally posted the centerpiece of his evening’s argument for how great he is: an image of his wall/fence/landfill monstrosity, with a giant image of his face superimposed behind it. Take a look at this stupid thing:

No one was particularly kind when it came to the responses. Several people pointed out that despite the “wall is coming” caption, the thing depicted in the image was clearly not a wall. Others pointed out that Trump had just unwittingly placed himself behind what looked a lot like prison bars. Still others pointed out that Trump clearly hadn’t watched Game of Thrones.

So this is how Donald Trump ends, not with a bang, but with a delusion. There will be no wall – ever – and soon there will be no Trump presidency, as he gets ousted and hauled off to prison. As long as Trump is content to stage idiotic meltdowns and post nonsense like this graphic, it means he has no plan for saving himself from his inevitable downfall. The prison walls are coming.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: Donald Trump reduced to groveling to Nancy Pelosi behind the scenes

  •
  •
  •
  •

Earlier today, Palmer Report explained why Donald Trump has been so afraid to publicly attack Speaker Nancy Pelosi: she’s the one who will decide when and how his impeachment begins, and he knows that she holds his fate in her hands. Now it turns out Trump is doing more than merely avoiding attacking her in public; he’s also groveling to her behind the scenes.

Donald Trump keeps holding private meetings with Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer, in an ongoing failed effort to convince them to fund his imaginary border wall. According to CBS News, during their latest such meeting, Trump was less focused on the wall or the shutdown, and more focused on his own inevitable impeachment. In fact he went so far as to ask, “Why does everyone want to impeach me, Nancy?”

Make no mistake: Donald Trump knows that Nancy Pelosi controls his fate. When you’re asking the person in charge of impeachment why everyone wants to impeach you, it means you’re asking not to be impeached. It’s like asking the sheriff why the police are all trying to arrest you. Trump is groveling here, and he’s not even being all that subtle about it.

Donald Trump is groveling behind the scenes, and he seems to be too addled to understand that these things are always going to leak. So he’s not groveling in public – at least not yet. But this is the guy who famously tweeted that the GOP should “DO SOMETHING” to save him back when the party was still in position to do so. That means we can expect Trump to start publicly begging Pelosi to save him eventually. She won’t oblige.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: Donald Trump suffers yet another high profile U.S. military resignation

  •
  •
  •
  •

When widely respected Secretary of Defense James Mattis resigned in protest of Donald Trump a few weeks ago, it felt like like a harbinger of things to come. It was widely expected that the U.S. military would turn against Trump; it was just a question of how soon and how strongly. Now it appears we’re starting to get our answer.

Rear Admiral Kevin Sweeney is the Department of Defense Chief of Staff. Or at least he was, because he just announced his resignation. Sweeney isn’t specifically citing Donald Trump in his resignation letter, saying this instead: “After two years in the Pentagon, I’ve decided the time is right to return to the private sector. It has been an honor to serve again alongside the men and women of the Department of Defense.” It’s notable that he did not say it was an honor to serve under the President.

Of course Sweeney isn’t even the first to resign this week. The official spokesperson for the Department of Defense, Dana White, announced her resignation a few days ago. Turnover is reality in these kinds of jobs, particularly once you get a couple years into an administration. But this is not merely business as usual.

What makes this different is that it comes within the context of Donald Trump having suffered whole number multiples more resignations than any past U.S. President, and that it comes after General Mattis basically told the U.S. military to turn against Trump. Sure enough, military leaders are abandoning this guy by the day, and that can only serve to help finish him off sooner.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: Elijah Cummings spells out what he’s about to do to Donald Trump

  •
  •
  •
  •

Democratic Congressman Elijah Cummings has a long and influential history in the House of Representatives, but he’s most broadly known for having tried to put lying sack of crap Trey Gowdy in his place during the GOP’s fraudulent email/Benghazi hearings aimed at sabotaging Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign. Now the tables are turned, as Gowdy has left Congress in disgrace, and Cummings is the new Chairman of the House Oversight Committee.

This means Elijah Cummings is now in position to launch investigations into any and all of Donald Trump’s scandals, because by definition, the House Oversight Committee has jurisdiction to examine everything the Executive Branch does. Cummings won’t run every investigation, as some of Trump’s scandals are more suited to be investigated by Adam Schiff’s House Intel Committee, or Jerry Nadler’s House Judiciary Committee, or Maxine Waters’ House Financial Services Committee, for instance. But Cummings is spelling out what he’s about to take on.

Here’s what Elijah Cummings posted online after officially becoming the House Oversight Committee Chairman: “I am humbled and honored to be the next Chairman of the primary investigative body of Congress. The American people spoke clearly in this election. They voted for the checks and balances that are mandated by the Constitution, and they voted for greater transparency and accountability in government. My priority will be to restore rigorous, responsible, and fact-based oversight while focusing on issues that affect the American people every single day. I hope we can exercise the powers of the Oversight Committee in a bipartisan way to do what we all swore to do less than 24 hours ago—fulfill our duty to uphold the Constitution and serve as a truly independent check on the Executive Branch.”

Elijah Cummings is a savvy political figure, and he’s not going to put all of his cards on the table just yet, where Donald Trump can see them. But his words above make clear that he’s going after Trump in the most aggressive manner possible. Of course the big difference between what Gowdy did to Clinton, and what Cummings is about to do to Trump, is that Cummings cares about the truth.

“Welcome to Donald Trump’s nightmare.

When the 116th Congress is sworn in on Thursday, the Democratic Party will control the House of Representatives ― and the new committee chairs are ready to finally conduct rigorous oversight of the president’s administration for the first time.

‘For the last two years, the president has had no oversight, no accountability from Congress,’ Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.), the new chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, said on ‘CBS This Morning’ on Wednesday. ‘We’re going to provide that oversight. We’re going to use the subpoena power if we have to.’

Democrats will almost immediately begin to investigate the many controversial policies and scandals of the Trump administration.”
