1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: Donald Trump has bizarre late night meltdown after failed Oval Office speech

It’s generally a bad sign when the “President” of the United States gives an Oval Office speech during prime time television, and it’s such a tepid and incoherent dud, no one can even figure out why he bothered giving it. Donald Trump’s border wall speech was full of sniffing and half-awake script reading, and completely devoid of anything resembling a pulse. Now Trump is having a bizarre late night meltdown about it.

Two hours after his failed Oval Office speech, Donald Trump posted this very strange tweet: “Thank you for soooo many nice comments regarding my Oval Office speech. A very interesting experience!” Okay, wait a minute. First of all, who supposedly gave these nice comments to Trump? And there was certainly nothing “interesting” about his brief and listless speech. So what gives?

Let’s be clear here: considering that he was already visibly half asleep by the time he gave this speech, to the point that he seriously sounded like he was doped up on sedatives or tranquilizers, there’s no possible way he was still conscious two hours later. So either this tweet was pre-scheduled before the speech, which would explain why it was so oddly generic, or someone on Trump’s staff wrote it.

We think we’ve discovered a pattern in which Donald Trump’s occasional tweets containing the word “soooo” are actually being posted by Sarah Huckabee Sanders. For that matter, this sounds like the kind of lifeless gibberish she would come up with. But it’s probably more fun to imagine Trump lying in bed, worried about the fallout from his crapola speech, and not being able to come up with anything wittier than it was an “interesting experience!”

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: Everyone piles on after Donald Trump gives the lamest Oval Office speech of all time

  •
  •

Donald Trump spent all day goading the mainstream media into hyping his prime time speech as if it were going to be some kind of history-altering event. Instead it ended up being an eight minute nothing burger which saw Trump sniffing his way through the same old talking points, while seemingly half asleep. Suffice it to say that the nation’s response to the speech was less than kind.

Larry Sabato of the UVA Center for Politics quipped “Now I see why Trump has never before given an Oval Office address. Just…bloody…awful.” Pastor John Pavlovitz tweeted this about Donald Trump: “How can someone with no soul, talk about the crisis of one?” Television writer Bryan Behar suggested Trump’s speech was “delivered with all the credibility and gravitas of a snake oil salesman in every episode of Bonanza.”

One of the leading Donald Trump parody accounts offered this send-up: “I gave my speech! In the Oval Office! Did you see me? It was on TV! Everybody says I did REALLY good! But Nancy and Chuck HATED it! There very mean to me! I got to use a telaprompter thingie! It had lots of words! I used it to say LOTS of stuff!” Joe Biden’s former Chief of Staff Ron Klain joked that Trump sounded like the animatronic version of Trump from Disney’s Hall of Presidents.

But really, most people simply couldn’t figure out why Donald Trump went to all the trouble of hyping this speech, only to give a total nothing burger of a speech. Even the New York Times opinion section ended up quipping “Well there’s nine minutes of my life I’m never getting back.” We couldn’t have said it better.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: We now know a whole lot more about the identity of Robert Mueller’s mystery foreign government owned company

  •
  •
  •
  •

The Supreme Court decided today that it has no interest in hearing the appeal from the mystery foreign government-owned company that’s been trying to dodge an evidence subpoena from Special Counsel Robert Mueller. This essentially means that Mueller has won the battle once and for all, as there is no higher court for the company to appeal to. We’ve also learned a lot more today about the company’s identity.

Various major media outlets have collectively revealed a number of details about the company today. For instance, while this comes as no surprise, it’s now confirmed that the company is a financial institution. In addition, the company has at least one branch in New York, which is where the subpoena was first delivered to. This narrows things down significantly.

We’ve already managed to rule out Donald Trump’s favorite money laundering bank, Deutsche Bank in Germany, as well as Alfa Bank in Russia, because they’re not owned by their respective governments. On the other hand, Sberbank is owned by the Russian government, and it has an office in New York City, and it tried to fund Trump Tower Moscow, so it completely fits the description. VEB Bank is also owned by the Kremlin, and it funded Trump’s failed real estate project in Toronto, but VEB doesn’t appear to have any presence in New York.

We still don’t have a definitive name, but the list of possibilities keeps getting shorter, and Sberbank fits the description the most closely. But the bigger story is that Robert Mueller has now definitively won this battle, and he’ll get his evidence against Trump unless the bank wants to get squeezed to death by massive daily financial penalties. And once Mueller finishes his report, this evidence will be in it, which should reveal the company’s identity in the process.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: Donald Trump sniffs his way through pointless half-awake border wall speech

  •
  •
  •
  •

We told you Donald Trump’s speech tonight wouldn’t amount to much of anything. We knew he wouldn’t try to declare a “national emergency” during his speech tonight, because even he’s not stupid enough to think such a plan would get him anywhere. We also knew Trump would probably sniff his way through this speech, which he did. But even we didn’t think he would come off as this weak, listless, half-awake, and pretty much finished.

Donald Trump began by tepidly reading from a script, repeating his usual lie-filled talking points about immigration and the border. At no point did he ever sound fully conscious, instead sounding like one of his advisers slipped him a bunch of horse tranquilizers just before he went on the air. But as the speech went on, his heavy breathing turned into heavy sniffing, leading to the usual social media debates about whether it’s a nervous tic or evidence that he’s been snorting illegal drugs.

In any case, this speech was a complete non-event. Twenty-four hours from now, no one will even remember it happened, just as we predicted. Interestingly, Trump even tried to go out of his way to avoid using the word “wall” – perhaps in recognition of just how deeply unpopular the wall concept is, and perhaps because he’s now obsessively pushing some kind of steel slat monstrosity instead of a wall.

Today was a huge day for political news. The Supreme Court ruled in favor of Robert Mueller. Donald Trump Jr’s favorite Russian government operative was indicted. Paul Manafort accidentally admitted Russian hackers rigged the vote totals. This Donald Trump speech was absolutely nothing, just as we predicted.

President to deliver primetime speech from the Oval Office while media organisations fact-check his assertions

Donald Trump is set to use the first Oval Office address of his presidency to portray a national security “crisis” on the US-Mexico border and demand billions of dollars for a wall, arguably the central promise of his short political career.

In a made-for-TV-moment he relishes, the US president is likely to paint a dire picture of drugs, criminals and terrorists entering the country. Media reports suggest that he will stop short of declaring a national emergency on day 18 of a partial government shutdown.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: Kellyanne Conway has deranged profane meltdown

  •
  •
  •
  •

If you’re looking to take the temperature of the failing Donald Trump regime, just take a look at the reactions of his top remaining advisers. Sarah Huckabee Sanders performed miserably on Fox News this weekend, to the point that host Chris Wallace called her out for her lies. Now, with almost no one left, Kellyanne Conway has stepped to the plate – and she’s promptly humiliated herself.

CNN correspondent Jim Acosta, who takes an aggressive no-nonsense approach to his job, encountered Kellyanne Conway outside the White House today and asked her this question while the cameras rolled: “Can you promise that the president will tell the truth tonight? Will he tell the truth?” She fired back with some version of I know you are but what am I?, prompting Acosta to declare that “I’m not the one with the alternative-facts problem like you.” Then things got particularly ugly.

Kellyanne Conway snapped and angrily responded to Acosta, “You’re such a smartass most of the time and I know you want this to go viral.” Thanks to Conway’s profane and unhinged response, the video clip did indeed go viral, and has been all over social media today. Oops.

This was not the kind of distraction that Donald Trump wanted this evening, even as he was preparing to put all his chips down on a losing hand with his border wall speech. It also undermines Trump’s recent declaration that people in high government positions shouldn’t be using foul language. But the real upshot is that Trump’s own people are cracking under the pressure as his presidency nears its end.

US justices turn down bid from foreign-government-owned company to avoid fines for refusing to comply with a subpoena

The US supreme court has turned down a request from a foreign-government-owned company in a case that may be linked to Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian intervention in the 2016 presidential election.

In a brief order on Monday, the court turned down the company’s bid to avoid paying a daily fine of $50,000 imposed by a federal judge in Washington for refusing to comply with a subpoena. The name of the country and company and details of the investigation were not publicly disclosed.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: Here’s the thing about Donald Trump’s speech tonight

  •
  •
  •
  •

This evening Donald Trump will give a nationally televised speech in which he’ll declare a national emergency and use it to build his border wall, he’ll fire Robert Mueller and pardon everyone, and then he’ll pull out a magic wand and turn us all into leprechauns before riding off on a unicorn. None of that is within a million miles of being true, of course, but you’d be tempted to believe it all if you’ve spent the day listening to the wrong pundits.

Here’s what’s really about to happen. This evening Donald Trump will give an ineffective speech that won’t change a single mind about his border wall fantasy or his failed government shutdown, and within a day, the speech will have been forgotten. If he fills his speech with lies, which is nearly a given, no one outside his base will believe him. If he tries to declare a national emergency tonight, which is unlikely, the courts will immediately intervene, which means that such a declaration will have about as much real-world impact as if he declared that all giraffes now have to be taller.

Presidents only give nationally televised addresses about a partisan battle when 1) they realize they’ve already lost the battle, and 2) they’re too obsessed with the battle to simply lose quietly and move on. It’s a strategy that has a zero percent track record of success. We’ve seen various presidents try it on occasion, including the ones we like, and it didn’t work for them either.

So why are we hearing so much baseless fear mongering today? Simply put, it’s good for ratings. The pundits want you to remain glued to your television or your computer screen between now and the start of Donald Trump’s speech tonight, and the best way to do that is to scare the crap out of you. However, I’m not willing to play that game. Tonight’s speech is a complete nonstarter, as is anything Trump might try to implement tonight – and you deserve better than to be told otherwise.
