Helton: 20 Out of 20: Iowa is getting crowded fast. Can Kamala Harris stand out?  UI The Daily Iowan

Most of us have spent our winter break relaxing, visiting family, and drinking hot chocolate. But most of us aren’t running for president of the United States.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: Tulsi Gabbard already in trouble for her anti-gay remarks

When Tulsi Gabbard announced her 2020 campaign for president on Friday, Palmer Report pointed out that she’s a “Democrat” in name only. She praises Putin while bashing Obama, she loves Assad, she’s actively buddied up to Trump, his base loves her, and Russia Today has heaped praise on her. In addition, she’s made absolutely horrible anti-gay remarks in the past. We wondered when this would catch up with her. It looks like it’s already happening.

Here’s what Tulsi Gabbard said in 2004. Yes, it was years ago, but she was already an elected office holder by that time: “To try to act as if there is a difference between ‘civil unions’ and same-sex marriage is dishonest, cowardly and extremely disrespectful to the people of Hawaii … As Democrats, we should be representing the views of the people, not a small number of homosexual extremists.”

Fortunately, it looks like the media isn’t willing to give Tulsi Gabbard a free pass for this. Huffington Post put out an article highlighting her bigoted remarks, and the article ended up being shared by prominent actor and activist D.L. Hughley. CNN is also making some rumblings about the matter. Andrew “KFILE” Kaczynski of CNN tweeted this: “I realized Tulsi Gabbard was anti-gay, but didn’t quite realize how anti-gay she was in the 2000s.” Interestingly, the only people defending Gabbard on this matter are the likes of pro-Trump political strategist Chris R. Barron.

The question now is whether cable news is willing to expose Gabbard on-air for who she is. It’s one thing to tweet about it. It’s another to put the scandal on the air, where it would probably bring a swift end to her presidential campaign. If Gabbard remains in the race as a “Democrat” who’s hated by most everyone on the left, the resulting controversy will be a ratings goldmine for CNN and MSNBC. Are they willing to do the right thing and report the ugly truth about her now, or are they going to drag this out for six months before finally flashing the “breaking news” across the screen that Gabbard has an entire warehouse full of skeletons?

This is not someone who was slow to acknowledge gay rights. This is someone who said vicious things about gay people, and actively campaigned against their civil rights, while trying (and failing) to convince the entire Democratic Party to support her bigotry on the issue. Tulsi Gabbard’s more recent voting record suggests that she’s done a 180 on this. But we’ve thrown people out of office, out of the movie industry, and out of public life in some instances, for having said things roughly this horrible in the past. Even if you want to forgive her because she’s sorry for it, you don’t turn around and make someone like her President of the United States. And that’s before getting to her love of Assad, Putin, Trump, and her overall right-wing views.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: Adam Schiff reveals he’s going for Donald Trump’s jugular

When Donald Trump met privately with Vladimir Putin last year, he didn’t even allow any of his own advisers in the room. Last night we learned, thanks to the Washington Post, that Trump went so far as to seize the translator’s notes, and to instruct him not to discuss the matter with anyone. Now Adam Schiff is taking things precisely where we’d been hoping.

The obvious solution all along has been for Congress to subpoena the translator, thus leaving the translator with a choice of either testifying or getting arrested for contempt of Congress. In such case the translator would likely show up to testify in a heartbeat.

Sure enough, Adam Schiff says that’s precisely what he plans to do: “Last year, we sought to obtain the interpreter’s notes or testimony, from the private meeting between Trump and Putin. The Republicans on our committee voted us down. Will they join us now? Shouldn’t we find out whether our president is really putting ‘America first?’”

Although Schiff is asking the Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee to join him in doing the right thing, he doesn’t need them. He and the Democrats on the committee have unilateral subpoena power, and now we know that they intend to use it to get to the bottom of Trump’s treason meeting with Putin.
