1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: Here’s the thing about Matthew Whitaker’s testimony that everyone is missing

I would love nothing more than to watch Matt Whitaker dissolve into a puddle of sweat tomorrow while nervously blurting out incriminating things that Donald Trump didn’t want him to say. In fact I might even make popcorn. But amid all the back-and-forth about whether he’ll answer the most important questions, or whether he’ll even show up, there’s something we’re all in danger of overlooking here: it doesn’t matter.

Not really, anyway. It does marginally matter, in the sense that Whitaker’s bumbling public testimony could help paint him as guilty in the eyes of the general public, and in the sense that he might screw up and give away some of Trump’s dirty secrets for all to hear. But public congressional hearings are generally grandstanding affairs, full of made for television moments, as politicians on both sides try to use their questions to score points.

If Matt Whitaker were scheduled to testify in private, that would be more of a fact finding mission, where no one was playing for the cameras, and the answers might help steer the real prosecutors out there in the right direction. In fact I would argue that the whole reason the Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee targeted Whitaker as their first witness was to scare the living crap out of him. Trump is in Whitaker’s one ear, telling him to commit obstruction of justice crimes. Now the House Democrats are in his other ear, reminding him that they’re watching him very carefully.

So if Whitaker finds a way to dodge showing up tomorrow and then tries to run out the clock by fighting the subpoena, or if he shows up and refuses to answer questions, it won’t mean he’s “gotten away” with anything. The point is not to bring him in and publicly humiliate him, though he deserves as much. The point is to scare him into staying out of Robert Mueller’s way for the rest of his tenure as Acting Attorney General.

Don’t worry, if Matthew Whitaker has in fact broken the law, either at Donald Trump’s instruction or with his own prior toilet scam, Whitaker will go down for it. But that’ll be the handiwork of Robert Mueller or a U.S. Attorney’s office, and it’ll happen without regard for what happens tomorrow. Whitaker’s testimony in front of the House tomorrow, or even just the fact that the House has been breathing down his neck all week, is really about scaring him into leaving Mueller alone.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: The sheer genius of what Jeff Bezos just did to Donald Trump

Amazon CEO and Washington Post owner Jeff Bezos found himself in the ultimate no-win situation. National Enquirer and its boss David Pecker had already exposed his affair and ruined his marriage. Bezos tried to investigate whether his enemy and Pecker’s friend Donald Trump was behind the whole thing. In response, the Enquirer threatened to publish Bezos’ compromising photos unless Bezos stopped digging.

So what did Jeff Bezos do in response to this no-win situation? He screamed as loudly as possible, for all to hear, that the National Enquirer had compromising photos of him. Then he published the emails that proved the Enquirer was trying to blackmail him. Then he made the case that Donald Trump was involved in it. Then he also made the case that Saudi Arabia was involved in it. Bezos set the whole thing on fire and made sure everyone was watching.

Now we all know that there are dick pics of Jeff Bezos out there. That’s probably something that the CEO of a major company would want to have known about himself. But by going public about it, not only did Bezos take a blowtorch to Pecker and Trump, he’s probably ensured that the photos won’t become public.

If Jeff Bezos had caved to David Pecker’s demands, Pecker would have continued to blackmail him on other matters going forward. Eventually Pecker would have run out of things to blackmail Bezos over, and Pecker would have published or sold the photos for profit. The pictures would have come out eventually.

But by going public about the whole thing, Jeff Bezos has ensured that David Pecker will go to prison for a long time, because this extortion attempt will blow up his immunity plea deal with the SDNY. Further, Pecker’s lawyers are surely explaining to him right now that if he does sell or publish these pictures, it’ll exacerbate the circumstances of the crime, and ensure that Pecker will go to prison for even longer.

Whatever you think of Jeff Bezos in general, he’s found a way to win in what was supposed to be a no-win situation. He’ll come out of this okay, and he just sent his would-be blackmailer David Pecker to prison. Bezos also found a way to blow this directly back onto Donald Trump, as the SDNY now has an angle for investigating and exposing Trump’s criminal culpability in the scandal. These kinds of Trump scandals usually tend to involve members of his family as well. It’ll all come out.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: No wonder Michael Cohen’s testimony got postponed

Yesterday the House Intelligence Committee announced at nearly the last minute that Michael Cohen’s private testimony was being postponed for three weeks. Palmer Report pointed to some clues that strongly hinted about why it happened, and now a federal judge has come out and publicly revealed the reason.

Palmer Report pointed to two key clues. First, a sealed item in the “USA v. Cohen” case was posted to the court docket at nearly the same time Michael Cohen’s testimony was postponed. That item was later withdrawn, but we took it as a sign that Cohen is still cooperating in ongoing criminal investigations into other key Trump people, and the fruits of those investigations are about to surface, so the House Intel Committee decided it was better off to wait a bit before Cohen testifies so he can discuss them.

The second clue was that the key Democrats on the House Intel Committee were all smiles while discussing the postponement, meaning they viewed it as a good thing that was going to work out in their favor. Now the judge in the Cohen case has essentially confirmed all of the above.

The judge revealed today that the criminal investigation involving Michael Cohen is still ongoing and is now focused on “other subjects” who remain unnamed. It’s not difficult to parse that Cohen is cooperating against these subjects (almost certainly Trump underlings and/or family members), and that he can’t spill the beans until they’ve been rung up. That means everyone involved expects them to be indicted and arrested within three weeks max, whoever they might be.

The big question here is whether tonight’s news about David Pecker’s attempted blackmail of Jeff Bezos is related to this. Pecker originally cut an immunity plea deal against Michael Cohen and Donald Trump. Now Pecker has been caught allegedly violating that detail in extreme fashion. If so, Cohen could be testifying against Pecker as we speak. Or it could be some other target, unrelated to Pecker.
