1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: Here’s how the Virginia Democrat debacle is going to end

It’s a scandal that’s become equal parts embarrassing, shameful, absurd, suspicious, and untenable. The top three elected officials in Virginia, all of whom are Democrats, are all suddenly facing very ugly scandals that appear to be legitimate – but are years old – and suddenly came out of nowhere. No one can seem to figure out how this is going to end, but I’m going to make it easy for you, because there are only specific two ways this can end, and one is far more likely than the other

First, let’s be clear: there is literally zero chance this ends with a Republican magically inheriting the Governor’s mansion. How can I be so sure? Simply put, there’s no reason the Democrats have to allow that to happen, so they won’t allow it to happen. A trap door won’t open up under these three Democrats tomorrow morning, whisking them out of office, simply because they have ugly scandals. So let’s talk about how the line of succession is actually going to play out.

Whether you think it’s fair or unfair, Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax will be the first to go. The Democrats in the Virginia legislature have called for his resignation, as has the Black Caucus in the Virginia legislature. That’s not surprising, considering he stands accused of multiple felonies, while Governor Ralph Northam and Attorney General Mark Herring merely stand accused of being jackasses.

From there, Ralph Northam will attempt to appoint a Democrat with a spotless record as the new Lieutenant Governor. Everyone involved will understand that this person is going to become Governor. The Republican legislature in Virginia will naturally want to fight this appointment. But it’s not going to come down to what the law says about these matters; it’ll come down to the court of public opinion.

If Northam is trying to get his racist self off the stage by appointing his own replacement so he can resign, and the Virginia Republicans try to hold up that process, it’ll then become their scandal. The national media narrative will shift from “what’s the deal with these awful Virginia Democrats” to “why are the Virginia Republicans trying to prevent this mess from being resolved.”

At that point the Virginia Republicans will probably cave, but only if Northam agrees to appoint someone who is not a rising star, and who pledges not to run in the inevitable special election for Governor in November. Then Northam will resign, the new Democrat will become Governor, and Attorney General Herring will likely resign quietly as well. Virginia Democrats will call it a victory, because they’ll get to retain the Governor’s mansion through November. Virginia Republicans will call it a victory because they’ll get a shot at winning the Governor race in November.

The less likely scenario is that The Virginia Republicans dig in and simply refuse to allow Northam to appoint a new Lieutenant Governor. At that point Northam would call for a special election in November, which he won’t run in, thus giving him and the Democrats the relative high ground in this debacle. In such case the national media would likely move on from the story.

There are a lot of moving parts here, but most of those parts are only able to move in one direction. The media feeding frenzy won’t end until someone resigns, but all three of them won’t resign unless the Democrats can retain control for now. So it’ll end up being some variation of the above. You may or may not see this as the fair outcome, or the ideal outcome; it’s merely the inevitable outcome.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: Mike Pence goes off the deep end

Sentient WWJD bracelet and possible SDNY investigation target Mike Pence obfuscated when asked about the prospect of another disastrous government shutdown if Donald Trump continues to desperately grasp for ways to pay for his vanity wall no one wants. Pence said he “can’t make that guarantee” ahead of the upcoming closure of the three-week post-shutdown negotiation window.

That bit of “wisdom,” via a lengthy interview with CBS Evening News anchor Jeff Glor, revealed that Pence has no clue what Trump’s plans are (much like Trump himself). And a recent report from CNN all but puts to rest any nonsensical plan to stage Act II of the 35-day shutdown tragedy that left 800,000 federal workers without paychecks and, among many other real consequences, affected the safety and efficiency of air travel.

The report claims that it only took ten air traffic controllers to cause a ground stop at La Guardia and “delays at other major hubs” when six ATCs from northern Virginia and four from Florida decided to call in rather than work another day without pay. Let that sink in. Ten air traffic controllers had the power to end Trump’s surreal and desperate attempt to force Dems to cave on the wall.

If there is another attempt to shut down the government, it isn’t hard to figure out how to end it. If ten air traffic controllers have that much influence, they and many of their friends will have the same influence prior to any further shutdown shenanigans. And they know it.

Mike Pence, at this point, is on autopilot as the administration continues to implode. If he’s hoping to ride the snake and take over after Trump is ousted, he’s delusional. Chris Christie recently indicated that, when he led Trump’s transition team, he wasn’t willing to break the law to facilitate the apparent widespread inauguration grift that is now being investigated. Christie is a windbag, but he knows the law and he isn’t stupid.

It’s impossible to say the same of Pence, who took over the transition team from Christie days after the election. He’s clueless on the prospect of another shutdown, he’s clueless about his future prospects, and he may have stumbled into some serious crimes playing Paul Manafort’s stooge. Another cruel and useless shutdown and Mike Pence’s future are both looking like loser’s bets.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: There’s something really suspicious going on right now with Donald Trump and Sean Hannity

Donald Trump woke up this morning and promptly spent forty minutes ranting about his political adversaries before he seemingly ran out of gas. At that point he simply retweeted some nonsense that had been tweeted by Fox News grand buffoon Sean Hannity. Then he retweeted another Hannity tweet. Then another.

Okay, so maybe Donald Trump just had Sean Hannity on the brain. After all, Hannity spews more pro-Trump propaganda than anyone on television. But then I remembered something I’d seen about Trump and Hannity two days ago which stood out as weird, and suddenly it took on a whole new context.

On Thursday evening, New York Times writer Maggie Haberman posted this tweet: “Spotted at the White House – Sean Hannity.” It’s not the first time Hannity has been spotted at Trump’s White House. But this was the night before Matt Whitaker’s big public testimony before the House Judiciary Committee. And as we all saw, Whitaker tried to use his testimony to promote the kind of deranged pro-Trump conspiracy theories that are most often heard on Hannity’s show.

So was Sean Hannity there specifically to tutor Matt Whitaker on which lines of BS to spew in front of the television cameras on Friday? In any case, Hannity’s presence at the White House on Thursday must have been such a big help to Donald Trump, he woke up this morning and decided to return the favor by sending a whole lot of traffic to Hannity’s Twitter account and articles.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: This mess with the Virginia Democrats takes a suspicious new turn

Former Navy Intelligence Officer Malcolm Nance appeared on HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher this week. Along with two other guests and Maher, he discussed the mess that is Virginia state politics. In Virginia, within the same week, the Governor, the Lieutenant Governor, and the third in line, the Attorney General, all had potential career-ending scandals surface.

In his typically understated, yet always commanding style, Malcolm Nance delivered one line about the crazy week in Virginia government that explains it all: It takes a lot of planning to pull off a coincidence like that.

Think about what the brilliant Malcolm Nance is suggesting. Virginia is a very important swing state, and in one week, somehow all this very bad but very old behavior was uncovered about all three of the leaders of the state, and pressure is building for all three to resign. I certainly found the scandals bad enough to justify their departures. But it’s notable that all three of these leaders are Democrats, and the fourth in line is a Republican. Ousting all three at once would turn control of the state over to Republican hands. It might just be time to take into consideration who will control the state of Virginia during the all-important 2020 elections.

As we saw in the state of Georgia, it is possible to get away with a lot of election dirty tricks like purging voter roles, and causing delays and problems with voting in minority districts. We certainly don’t want any of that going on in the very important swing state of Virginia during the 2020 elections. We must get to the bottom of these Democratic scandals, but also get to the bottom of how they were unearthed.
