1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: Here’s how the Virginia Democrat debacle is going to end

  •
  •
  •
  •

It’s a scandal that’s become equal parts embarrassing, shameful, absurd, suspicious, and untenable. The top three elected officials in Virginia, all of whom are Democrats, are all suddenly facing very ugly scandals that appear to be legitimate – but are years old – and suddenly came out of nowhere. No one can seem to figure out how this is going to end, but I’m going to make it easy for you, because there are only specific two ways this can end, and one is far more likely than the other

First, let’s be clear: there is literally zero chance this ends with a Republican magically inheriting the Governor’s mansion. How can I be so sure? Simply put, there’s no reason the Democrats have to allow that to happen, so they won’t allow it to happen. A trap door won’t open up under these three Democrats tomorrow morning, whisking them out of office, simply because they have ugly scandals. So let’s talk about how the line of succession is actually going to play out.

Whether you think it’s fair or unfair, Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax will be the first to go. The Democrats in the Virginia legislature have called for his resignation, as has the Black Caucus in the Virginia legislature. That’s not surprising, considering he stands accused of multiple felonies, while Governor Ralph Northam and Attorney General Mark Herring merely stand accused of being jackasses.

From there, Ralph Northam will attempt to appoint a Democrat with a spotless record as the new Lieutenant Governor. Everyone involved will understand that this person is going to become Governor. The Republican legislature in Virginia will naturally want to fight this appointment. But it’s not going to come down to what the law says about these matters; it’ll come down to the court of public opinion.

If Northam is trying to get his racist self off the stage by appointing his own replacement so he can resign, and the Virginia Republicans try to hold up that process, it’ll then become their scandal. The national media narrative will shift from “what’s the deal with these awful Virginia Democrats” to “why are the Virginia Republicans trying to prevent this mess from being resolved.”

At that point the Virginia Republicans will probably cave, but only if Northam agrees to appoint someone who is not a rising star, and who pledges not to run in the inevitable special election for Governor in November. Then Northam will resign, the new Democrat will become Governor, and Attorney General Herring will likely resign quietly as well. Virginia Democrats will call it a victory, because they’ll get to retain the Governor’s mansion through November. Virginia Republicans will call it a victory because they’ll get a shot at winning the Governor race in November.

The less likely scenario is that The Virginia Republicans dig in and simply refuse to allow Northam to appoint a new Lieutenant Governor. At that point Northam would call for a special election in November, which he won’t run in, thus giving him and the Democrats the relative high ground in this debacle. In such case the national media would likely move on from the story.

There are a lot of moving parts here, but most of those parts are only able to move in one direction. The media feeding frenzy won’t end until someone resigns, but all three of them won’t resign unless the Democrats can retain control for now. So it’ll end up being some variation of the above. You may or may not see this as the fair outcome, or the ideal outcome; it’s merely the inevitable outcome.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: Mike Pence goes off the deep end

  •
  •
  •
  •

Sentient WWJD bracelet and possible SDNY investigation target Mike Pence obfuscated when asked about the prospect of another disastrous government shutdown if Donald Trump continues to desperately grasp for ways to pay for his vanity wall no one wants. Pence said he “can’t make that guarantee” ahead of the upcoming closure of the three-week post-shutdown negotiation window.

That bit of “wisdom,” via a lengthy interview with CBS Evening News anchor Jeff Glor, revealed that Pence has no clue what Trump’s plans are (much like Trump himself). And a recent report from CNN all but puts to rest any nonsensical plan to stage Act II of the 35-day shutdown tragedy that left 800,000 federal workers without paychecks and, among many other real consequences, affected the safety and efficiency of air travel.

The report claims that it only took ten air traffic controllers to cause a ground stop at La Guardia and “delays at other major hubs” when six ATCs from northern Virginia and four from Florida decided to call in rather than work another day without pay. Let that sink in. Ten air traffic controllers had the power to end Trump’s surreal and desperate attempt to force Dems to cave on the wall.

If there is another attempt to shut down the government, it isn’t hard to figure out how to end it. If ten air traffic controllers have that much influence, they and many of their friends will have the same influence prior to any further shutdown shenanigans. And they know it.

Mike Pence, at this point, is on autopilot as the administration continues to implode. If he’s hoping to ride the snake and take over after Trump is ousted, he’s delusional. Chris Christie recently indicated that, when he led Trump’s transition team, he wasn’t willing to break the law to facilitate the apparent widespread inauguration grift that is now being investigated. Christie is a windbag, but he knows the law and he isn’t stupid.

It’s impossible to say the same of Pence, who took over the transition team from Christie days after the election. He’s clueless on the prospect of another shutdown, he’s clueless about his future prospects, and he may have stumbled into some serious crimes playing Paul Manafort’s stooge. Another cruel and useless shutdown and Mike Pence’s future are both looking like loser’s bets.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: There’s something really suspicious going on right now with Donald Trump and Sean Hannity

  •
  •
  •
  •

Donald Trump woke up this morning and promptly spent forty minutes ranting about his political adversaries before he seemingly ran out of gas. At that point he simply retweeted some nonsense that had been tweeted by Fox News grand buffoon Sean Hannity. Then he retweeted another Hannity tweet. Then another.

Okay, so maybe Donald Trump just had Sean Hannity on the brain. After all, Hannity spews more pro-Trump propaganda than anyone on television. But then I remembered something I’d seen about Trump and Hannity two days ago which stood out as weird, and suddenly it took on a whole new context.

On Thursday evening, New York Times writer Maggie Haberman posted this tweet: “Spotted at the White House – Sean Hannity.” It’s not the first time Hannity has been spotted at Trump’s White House. But this was the night before Matt Whitaker’s big public testimony before the House Judiciary Committee. And as we all saw, Whitaker tried to use his testimony to promote the kind of deranged pro-Trump conspiracy theories that are most often heard on Hannity’s show.

So was Sean Hannity there specifically to tutor Matt Whitaker on which lines of BS to spew in front of the television cameras on Friday? In any case, Hannity’s presence at the White House on Thursday must have been such a big help to Donald Trump, he woke up this morning and decided to return the favor by sending a whole lot of traffic to Hannity’s Twitter account and articles.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: This mess with the Virginia Democrats takes a suspicious new turn

  •
  •
  •
  •

Former Navy Intelligence Officer Malcolm Nance appeared on HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher this week. Along with two other guests and Maher, he discussed the mess that is Virginia state politics. In Virginia, within the same week, the Governor, the Lieutenant Governor, and the third in line, the Attorney General, all had potential career-ending scandals surface.

In his typically understated, yet always commanding style, Malcolm Nance delivered one line about the crazy week in Virginia government that explains it all: It takes a lot of planning to pull off a coincidence like that.

Think about what the brilliant Malcolm Nance is suggesting. Virginia is a very important swing state, and in one week, somehow all this very bad but very old behavior was uncovered about all three of the leaders of the state, and pressure is building for all three to resign. I certainly found the scandals bad enough to justify their departures. But it’s notable that all three of these leaders are Democrats, and the fourth in line is a Republican. Ousting all three at once would turn control of the state over to Republican hands. It might just be time to take into consideration who will control the state of Virginia during the all-important 2020 elections.

As we saw in the state of Georgia, it is possible to get away with a lot of election dirty tricks like purging voter roles, and causing delays and problems with voting in minority districts. We certainly don’t want any of that going on in the very important swing state of Virginia during the 2020 elections. We must get to the bottom of these Democratic scandals, but also get to the bottom of how they were unearthed.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: In defense of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

  •
  •
  •
  •

Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez doesn’t need my advice, or my help. She’s been in Congress for about five minutes and she’s already secured a seat on the House Oversight Committee and a seat on the House Financial Services Committee, so she must be doing something right. She’s said and done a lot of things I agree with, and a few things I disagree with, so I’ve been taking something of a wait and see approach; she’s a rookie, after all. But one thing is not up for debate.

Simply put, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has quickly become the most lied-about person in Congress. Each day I read new and ridiculous false accusations about her, always coming from the Republicans, because they need a designated bogey man. These lies are often parroted by the major media outlets, who naturally don’t bother to point out that these lies are lies, because the controversy is good for ratings.

AOC has generally done very well whenever she’s pushed back against this crap, which is impressive when you consider that she’s a rookie, and many of her Republican attackers have ten or twenty years of political experience. It’ll take time for us to see just how smart and savvy she ends up being, but it’s already clear that she’s smarter and savvier than her GOP attackers will ever be. The thing is, it’s not enough that she’s winning these fights whenever the GOP goes after her. Regardless of how these fights actually play out, too many in the media are naming the “winner” in these fights based on whatever they think gives them the biggest ratings boost on any given day.

This phenomenon is already wildly out of control. Yesterday AOC posted this tweet: “It’s pretty wild that the GOP can’t decide whether they’re going to run with the conspiracy theory that I’m secretly rich, or the exaggeration & mockery of my family’s struggle after my dad died during the financial crisis. Instead, they decide to defy logic and run with both.”

She’s absolutely right; the Republicans are pegging her as being simultaneously rich and poor, so they can attack her for both things. And yet when the GOP pegs her as secretly rich one day, and then pegs her as being irresponsibly flat broke the next day, too few TV pundits (on any channel) are willing to point out that at least one of these GOP assertions has to be a lie.

For that reason alone, we all have a responsibility to defend Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez against these outright lies about her, whether we’re fans of hers or not, because the Republicans can’t be allowed to make lies like this stick against anyone in the party. We’ve seen how horribly that can go wrong. During the 2016 election, the GOP floated nonstop lies about Hillary Clinton (email, Benghazi, health, imaginary indictments, etc), and the media played up those lies for ratings on a daily basis. Plenty of liberals knew that these lies were lies, but didn’t feel inclined to defend Hillary against these lies, because she wasn’t their favorite Democrat. It’s part of why Trump is in power.

We’re seeing the same thing start to happen already with leading 2020 candidates like Kamala Harris and Elizabeth Warren. The GOP floats lies about them, and then counts on the media to play up those phony controversies for ratings, while counting on liberals to insufficiently push back against those lies. Enough is enough. This kind of thing is just so dangerous, and we simply must to fight back against it.

We can debate whether Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez should be as front-and-center as she is, considering that she’s just one of a large number of potential-laden rookie House Democrats. But the reality is that she is front and center. The Republicans are going to find a way to keep her there, because they think that spreading lies about an outspoken liberal Hispanic woman like her is their best bet for taking down the entire Democratic Party.

You don’t have to agree with AOC’s policies, positions, or approach to liberal politics. She might be your favorite Democrat, or your least favorite Democrat. But if we want the Democrats and the liberals to succeed in the coming months and in the next election, we must push back against the lies being floated about her. It’s not about protecting or defending her; she’s doing fine in that regard. It’s about preventing the GOP from using those lies about her to gain an unfair advantage over the entire liberal movement.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: Donald Trump Jr’s bad habit is catching up to him

  •
  •
  •
  •

Donald Trump Jr has a bad habit. Whenever a story comes out that seems to either prop up his unpopular father or debunk a report that lends credibility to the Mueller investigation, he retweets and celebrates the “victory” with his MAGA hordes. Latest evidence: The CBS poll that indicated 97% of Republicans said ‘yes’ when asked if they liked Trump’s latest nationally broadcast dribble.

To Junior, this is irrefutable proof that the liberals have been “owned.” Meanwhile, in reality, the investigations into Trump are gaining steam. There’s no speech or tweet that will have any impact on any Mueller subpoena or SDNY indictment.

A similar premature celebration happened when the Special Counsel’s office issued a statement weeks ago that, at first glance, appeared to call into question Buzzfeed’s story claiming Donald Trump directed Michael Cohen’s activity regarding Trump Tower Moscow. Though Mueller didn’t present specific evidence pertaining to what Buzzfeed was wrong about, it was enough for Junior and his followers to gloat, enabled by familiar bloviators like Gingrich and Hannity.

However, weeks later, the Buzzfeed story still stands with no retraction. Why? For one, court filings support the story. Despite the pervasive “lol Buzzfeed” blasts seen on MAGA Twitter, unnamed sources aren’t solely providing the key information. Also, it’s important to remember that the Buzzfeed story landed with such asteroid-like impact that House Dems seemed close to launching at least one investigation based on it.

That impact may be the key. Buzzfeed’s story may have contained imperfections that are unrelated to its substance, namely Trump’s directives to Cohen regarding Trump Tower Moscow, and all illegalities therein. Like life, news stories are almost never perfect. What exactly Mueller’s office was referring to may, in fact, seem relatively trivial when/if it eventually comes to light. So why would Don Jr bother celebrating?

Though we know little about the inner workings of the Mueller investigation, we have observed a disciplined, motivated, smart, and thorough team that by all appearances seems hellbent on exploring every angle of Trump and the broad range of probable (considering the voluminous evidence) crimes connected to his presidency and who exactly helped make it so.

It may be that the Mueller team saw the Buzzfeed story land hard, read the tea leaves, and released the statement to “pump the brakes” on any House notions of moving forward on a separate investigation, hearings, etc. That doesn’t mean that Mueller released an outwardly false statement, and indeed it would make no sense for the him to endanger his office’s credibility just to run interference on one story, no matter how impactful.

Much more likely is that Mueller’s disciplined and comprehensive approach required that he maintain the lead on the larger investigation. The House, Mueller, and SDNY are after the same goal. They have no reason to step on each other’s toes. So, when Don Jr and the MAGAs dance on the grave of the investigation, independent journalism, or simple decency, remember: they’re grasping at any scraps they can get their claws on. Mueller has all the meat and the patience to pick the bones clean.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: The real reason Maria Butina’s sentencing was just delayed

  •
  •
  •
  •

When Russian spy Maria Butina cut a cooperating plea deal, the big question was whether she’d actually go through with the requirements and sell out everyone involved, or if she’d end up cowering to Vladimir Putin instead. If you’re rooting for her to take down as many people as possible, then you just got some very good news: she’s still at it.

Earlier this week the Feds in South Dakota arrested Maria Butina’s boyfriend, Republican operative Paul Erickson, on felony fraud charges that don’t necessarily appear to have anything to do with Russia. We don’t know if it was Butina who sold out Erickson for his fraud schemes, or if the Feds got the goods on Erickson through other methods. But what we do know is that Butina is still working on taking down other people.

Butina has asked the judge in her case for a fourteen day delay before sentencing, so she can continue providing cooperation, according to an MSN report. Why does this matter? By definition, when Butina was first cutting her plea deal, she would have needed to give up everything she knew on every criminal in her life during her initial proffer sessions. But now, in at least one of the cases against these other people, things have progressed to the point that Butina thinks she can help more.

Typically this would involve prosecutors finding new evidence against one of the Butina-related targets, then circling back to Butina and asking her if she knows anything about it, and then her realizing that something she previously didn’t think to mention is now relevant. We still have no way of knowing who’s being targeted in this instance, but there are some clues.

Maria Butina courted personal relationships with a number of Republican politicians, Republican operatives, NRA officials, and others. It’s a long list, and we don’t know which of those relationships ended up being criminal in nature. But it’s someone important enough that Butina thinks her additional cooperation might reduce her sentence. Whoever it is, it looks like they may be going down within the next fourteen days.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: Evidence piles up that Donald Trump greenlighted the murder the Jamal Khashoggi

  •
  •
  •
  •

Did Donald Trump greenlight the murder of Jamal Khashoggi? We don’t know, but the circumstantial evidence that he may indeed have done so is quite compelling. Certainly, if true, it makes Trump an accessory to murder. While we know of no other instance of Donald Trump allegedly involving himself in murder, persons with much smaller criminal resumes than Trump have turned out to be killers. But let’s examine the evidence.

First, there is Trump’s proven track record of recklessly endangering the lives of people he dislikes. Recall the times at rallies when he encouraged the crowd to “rough up” protestors, even offering to pay their legal fees. And despite exhortations from both political parties for him to desist, Trump stubbornly continues to invoke the incendiary hate speech phrase “enemy of the people” against the Constitutionally provisioned American free press. In so doing he has put at risk the lives of many journalists. Trump’s contempt for the lives, welfare and safety of people he regards as enemies is well-established.

Next, the Saudi Arabian crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman (or MbS), a known friend of Trump and his business empire, has been strongly implicated in Khashoggi’s murder. Khashoggi, after all, has been a journalistic thorn in MbS’s side for many years. That MbS is guilty of ordering that murder has been established virtually beyond doubt. Dependent as the Saudis are on the United States as an ally, it’s hard to believe he didn’t consult Trump first before murdering Khashoggi. And Trump is virtually alone in the American government in disputing the Crown Prince’s culpability.

Then there’s the fact that Khashoggi was employed by the Washington Post, which is owned by Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, a man Trump hates and frequently lampoons via Twitter as “Jeff Bozo.”

Finally there’s Khashoggi himself, a dark skinned devout Muslim, columnist for the Washington Post, the very quintessence of the kind of person Donald Trump hates and has spent his entire political life demonizing.

It is therefore perfectly reasonable that MbS spoke of his storied disaffection with Jamal Khashoggi to Donald Trump, and perhaps using the ambiguous language of euphemism, got Trump to promise there would be no consequences for arranging an “accident.” Certainly there have been no consequences. Trump has seen to that. If it can be proved that Trump is culpable in Khashoggi’s murder, Donald Trump’s troubles may turn out to be much worse than we have guessed.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: Things just got even uglier for Donald Trump and Jared Kushner

  •
  •
  •
  •

As is so often the case these days, a new fact reported about Donald Trump quickly got buried in the flood of daily news, and few in the media went back to connect the new information with other known facts about the Trump family. What we learned was that Donald Trump was seeking hundreds of millions of dollars in new loans from Deutsche Bank during the campaign.

What is public knowledge about Donald Trump – but not stressed in light of this new information from the New York Times – is that he was actively running a campaign for President of the United States, specifically on the premise of not needing money, of being so wealthy that he would fund his own campaign, and on being the only candidate so wealthy he could not be bought by special interests.

To properly convey the fraudulent basis upon which Donald Trump presented himself as a candidate in a unique position to fix government, the media would need to play clips of Donald Trump’s often repeated campaign line, “I Don’t Need Anybody’s Money. It’s Nice, I’m Really Rich,” and then point out that while he was saying this refrain at campaign rallies, he was applying and being turned down for hundreds of millions of dollars of loans from Deutsche Bank, the last known bank that would still do business with him.

To say you don’t need anybody’s money, while secretly seeking money from a foreign bank, is a lie, and it is a lie that is material to the qualifications Trump ran on. This could be considered fraud, and may be actionable. Add to this what we know about Jared Kushner’s desperate attempts to obtain millions in loans to save his real estate empire, allegedly from banks connected to foreign governments, and a clear picture begins to emerge of a family in dire financial straights.

It is in light of all these failed attempts to secure loans by both Donald Trump and Jared Kushner, that later media-covered stories should be viewed: the millions of missing dollars from Trump’s inauguration committee, and Jared Kushner’s scandal in which his family members allegedly offered to sell American visas, just to name two. Stay tuned. As Palmer Report has been reporting, it’s quite possible Trump’s scandals are worse than has been speculated and reported.
