Palmer Report: Donald Trump’s fatwa of hate

  •
  •
  •
  •

It was precisely thirty years ago this Valentine’s Day that the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, in a rhapsody of stupefying ignorance and insufferably wicked intolerance astonishing even for him, decreed a fatwa ordering the murder of Salman Rushdie. Rushdie’s “crime” was writing a book, “The Satanic Verses,” detailing verses that were supposedly spoken by Mohammad as part of the Qur’an, and then withdrawn on the grounds that the devil had sent them to deceive him.

Not to be outdone, many in the world press matched the Ayatollah’s absurdity with eye-poppingly craven capitulation, refusing to call it what it was: a state sponsored mob hit ordered by a religious lunatic. Instead they collectively scratched their heads feebleheadedly and wondered aloud at the moral maze presented by religious “freedoms” and our helplessness in the face of them. As if that weren’t enough, they even dared to ask what role of responsibility in all this was played by Rushdie himself, who, understandably, went into hiding.

When at a Trump rally on Monday, when a BBC cameraman was attacked by a Trump supporter, that MAGA hat-wearing imbecile was responding to a Trump fatwa of his own. Donald Trump is fully aware of the power of his words and the hate his fanatical, evil regime has inspired. Yet he continues to use the language of hatred and intolerance, directed at America’s press in particular, and all who disagree with him in general.

The response from the press has remained impotent. Very little is being said condemnatory of Trump and his continuing characterizations of the press as “fake news” and “enemy of the people.” And what is being said doesn’t go far enough, nor does it demand enough.

The White House did issue a statement, deliberately lackluster and predictably insincere. “President Trump condemns all acts of violence against any individual or group of people – including members of the press. We ask that anyone attending an event do so in a peaceful and respectful manner.”

Donald Trump’s greedy, exigent demand for uncritical praise is matched by his pathological hatred for criticism. Like the Ayatollah’s God he is simply too weak to endure the ordinary onslaught of criticism that all who took the job before him acknowledged as an inevitable hazard of the occupation. Forget the flaccid disavowal from the White House: Donald Trump’s fatwa of evil is still in force.

Palmer Report: Matt Whitaker just got what was coming to him

  •
  •
  •
  •

Before Acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker was even done testifying for the House Judiciary Committee, Palmer Report wrote that he had already committed perjury during his testimony, and that he was very likely to get rung up for it. Sure enough, the Chairman of the committee just did precisely that.

In a development that’s entirely expected yet nonetheless stunning, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler has published a letter to Matt Whitaker, informing him that he’s been nailed for felony perjury. When Whitaker claimed under oath that he hadn’t discussed the Robert Mueller probe with Donald Trump, Palmer Report predicted that proof would soon surface that they had in fact discussed it. It’s not that we had any inside information or a crystal ball. It’s just that the Democrats had zeroed in on this question in a manner which suggested they already had proof, and they were merely daring Whitaker to lie. So what now?

Jerry Nadler’s letter to Matt Whitaker says that the committee has “identified several individuals with direct knowledge of the phone calls you denied receiving from the White House.” For the moment, Nadler is merely asking Whitaker to come back and “clarify” his answers under oath. This is, in effect, an offer to maybe not send Whitaker to prison, if he promptly comes back and tells the incriminating truth about Donald Trump.

The ball is now very briefly in Matt Whitaker’s court. If he doesn’t immediately to come back and tell the truth, Jerry Nadler will ring him up for felony perjury. If Nadler doesn’t feel that referring Whitaker to the DOJ will get the job done, he can simply turn Whitaker’s transcript over to Robert Mueller, who can then indict and arrest him, and push him to cut a plea deal against Trump. Either way, the point is to get Whitaker to sell Trump out, as Whitaker is a peon, and Trump is the real target.

Protesters’ need for recognition has been harnessed to a darker, divisive movement and new heroes promising them greatness

Thousands of people in Tahrir Square chanted the slogan: “Bread! Dignity! Freedom!” It was 2011, and the height of the Arab spring. Standing on my own in the crowd, I recalled a middle-aged worker I’d met in Buenos Aires a decade earlier telling me why he and his colleagues had taken over a factory during Argentina’s economic collapse. He rattled off reasons such as hunger, poverty and inequality. But then his voice changed: “And the boss … ” he said. “Well, he never said good morning to us and, you know, that destroys your dignity.”

Defending one’s dignity sometimes tastes sweeter than the bread – yes, even when you’re hungry

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: House Democrats just nailed Matt Whitaker to the wall

  •
  •
  •
  •

In a waste of a few hours, Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker appeared on February 8, 2019, before the House Judiciary Committee. Bombastic, smart mouthed, condescending, Whitaker fought for the entire day when he was not guzzling almost a case of water.
Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler issued a letter to Whitaker on Wednesday evening basically calling out Whitaker as being “full of Shitaker.”

Nadler wrote in part: “Although the Committee appreciates your decision to appear, Members on both sides of the aisle found many of your answers to be unsatisfactory, incomplete, or contradicted by other evidence. You repeatedly refused to offer clear responses regarding your communications with the White House, and you were inconsistent in your application of the Department’s policy related to the discussion of ongoing investigations.”

In a few days, after William Barr is confirmed by the Senate (the likelihood of that not happening is infinitesimal), Whitaker will no longer be part of the Attorney General’s office and may well not be a governmental employee. If he fails to clarify or respond to the Nadler letter, he likely will be subjected to a formal deposition, as Nadler makes abundantly clear.

On the same day that the Nadler letter was sent, “President” Donald “T-Rex” Trump and his Homeland Security team quietly pulled funding for protections of the 2020 elections from foreign interference. This move is troubling because while we don’t know the full extent yet of meddling in 2016, we know it existed to a large extent and may well have influenced who sits in the White House today.

To remove these protections and not fund it, after Donald Trump’s intelligence chiefs testified recently that the threat continues and is a valid and disturbing one, is a dangerous next step in a dangerous administration. We look forward to Nadler enforcing some disclosure upon Whitaker and threatening to ramp up the process should Whitaker not be forthcoming. And the Nadler committee might next investigate why it is that Trump and his administration are refusing to take knowledge of Russian (and other foreign actors) meddling seriously.
