1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: Wow these two guys are idiots

There’s a popular and arguably overused meme on social media in which one public figure says or does something incredibly stupid, and then another public figure says “Hold my beer” before doing something even more incredibly stupid. I can’t recall an instance of that meme fitting any situation better than when it came to Donald Trump and Roger Stone today.

Donald Trump woke up this morning and decided that his best move was to threaten “retribution” against Alec Baldwin over his Saturday Night Live portrayals. This went over about as well as one might have expected. Trump was condemned for it from all sides, as he managed to come off as both weak and dangerously out of control. Baldwin, never one to back down, will surely respond by portraying Trump on SNL more frequently. It was a disaster for Trump. But then Roger Stone had his “Hold my beer” moment.

Roger Stone is currently out on bail as he awaits trial for seven (and counting) felony charges. He’s very likely to be convicted and sent to prison for the rest of his natural life. The reality is that his time out on bail is probably the last freedom he’ll ever taste. So what did he do? Instead of enjoying it while he still can, he posted an image of the trial judge with a crosshair over her head.

Roger Stone’s lawyers have clearly already explained to him that he’s in severe danger of having his bail revoked, as Stone has since issued a formal apology to the judge in a court filing. Stone could be in jail by tomorrow, and if that happens, he’ll likely never spend another day outside of a cell. Donald Trump started this day by making an idiotic threat, and his buddy Stone somehow managed to top him.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: Matt Whitaker’s eerie silence

  •
  •
  •
  •

On Thursday, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler publicly informed Matt Whitaker that the committee had found proof that Whitaker had lied about his communications with Donald Trump. Nadler demanded that Whitaker come back and tell the truth. The clear implication: we have you nailed on felony perjury, and you can sell Trump out, or you can go to prison.

Tellingly, the next day, the Donald Trump regime announced that Whitaker – whose time as Acting Attorney General was ending – had been given a pointless new job at the Department of Justice. Trump was clearly attempting to keep Whitaker in the fold, and prevent him from cutting any sort of plea deal. But just because Whitaker (apparently) accepted the job, it doesn’t mean he’s still playing for Team Trump at his own expense.

By now we would have expected Matt Whitaker to publicly respond to the House Judiciary Committee, if only to tell them to buzz off. Yet Whitaker has publicly said nothing. It’s been four days, so one would think that if Whitaker were simply ignoring the committee’s demand letter, we’d have seen Nadler making even more noise about it. Yet Nadler has also been silent. So what’s going on here?

It’s possible Matt Whitaker has responded to the committee privately. If so, that would suggest he’s looking to cooperate and maybe save his own butt, and he’s doing it privately because he doesn’t want Donald trump to find out. It’s also possible Whitaker is indeed ignoring the letter, and Nadler is silently preparing to drop the legal hammer on him instead of merely responding with words. We don’t know what’s going on here, and that’s the odd part. Considering what’s at stake here – Whitaker could end up arrested over this – the eerie silence is speaking rather loudly.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: Donald Trump has deranged late night meltdown about going to the bathroom

  •
  •
  •
  •

Donald Trump is having a bad day, to put it mildly. His threats against Alec Baldwin didn’t get him anywhere. His buddy Roger Stone just finished himself off by making threats against a federal judge, thus probably increasing the odds that Stone will end up desperately flipping on Trump to try to save himself. So how is Trump handling things? By tweeting about – we’re not kidding about this – going to the bathroom.

Even as former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe was airing Donald Trump’s dirty laundry tonight for all to see, Trump was busy tweeting this: “Remember this, Andrew McCabe didn’t go to the bathroom without the approval of Leakin’ James Comey!” Hey look, Trump made a joke. Go to the bathroom. Leakin’. We get it. The thing is, no one is laughing – at least not for the reasons Trump wishes people were laughing.

Donald Trump is a guy who is closer than ever to being ousted and sent to prison. Skeptics said Paul Manafort would never go down, but he’s currently rotting away behind bars. Those same skeptics then said Roger Stone would never go down, but his life is now also over. There’s no reason to expect that Trump won’t end up suffering the same fate. Perhaps that’s why Trump has been going to uniquely bonkers all evening.

It’s not just the bathroom joke. Donald Trump also retweeted a video of a guy bouncing a ball on his head, which Trump thought was “Amazing!” The trouble: the person Trump retweeted appears to be a participant in a Bitcoin scam. Hey, Trump sure can pick ’em. We think Trump’s tweets tonight are a bunch of crap.

Justice department says deputy attorney general who brought in special counsel is likely to leave in mid-March

Rod Rosenstein, the US deputy attorney general who appointed a special counsel to investigate possible ties between Russia and President Donald Trump’s campaign, is expected to step down by mid March, a Justice Department official has said.

Rosenstein had been expected to depart shortly after new Attorney General William Barr assumed office. Barr was confirmed for the role by the US Senate last week.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: Enough with this nonsense about Rod Rosenstein resigning

  •
  •
  •
  •

It’s happened yet again tonight. Someone has told a major media outlet that Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein is about to resign, and that media outlet has giddily reported the story as if it were fact, even though it’s obvious that the story is a load of horse crap.

Every few months, this same cycle repeats itself. It’s the same story about Rod Rosenstein resigning, and it never ends up happening. It’s painfully obvious by now that the “source” is Donald Trump and/or his own people, because Trump wishes Rosenstein would resign, and he figures the best way to destabilize Rosenstein’s position is to create the false narrative that he’s about to resign.

The last time this nonsense happened in early January, Rod Rosenstein let it be known through his associates that he wasn’t going anywhere until after Robert Mueller finished his work. Yet even after Rosenstein shot down the report about his imminent resignation, most major media outlets continued to cite the false report.

Now we have yet another report about Rod Rosenstein resigning, and it’s as clear as ever that the people reporting the story never even so much as asked Rosenstein about whether it’s true. Enough of this nonsense. The media keeps putting out this crap about Rosenstein because it’s scary, and therefore great for ratings – but it’s about as credible as the major media reports every few weeks that Donald Trump is about to fire Robert Mueller and/or magically pardon everyone at any moment.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: This is a fight Donald Trump won’t win

  •
  •
  •
  •

Donald Trump’s declaration of a national emergency over his vanity wall has already triggered several lawsuits. Now, three Texas landowners have filed suit against Trump’s fake national emergency declaration. According to Al Jazeera, they are joined in the suit by Frontera Audobon Society, an environmental nonprofit “that acts as a haven for birds, butterflies and other wildlife.” The three citizens who are part of the suit are residents of Starr County, which sits on the Texas border with Mexico. The county’s immediate proximity to the Mexican border puts it directly in the path of the proposed border wall, which if built, would deprive them of access to their lands.

As I pointed out earlier, California is filing suit and California’s Attorney General told ABC’s George Stephanoplous that the state is “ready to go” with its case and expects to be joined by several other states, including New Mexico, Oregon, Minnesota, New Jersey, Hawaii and Connecticut. Becerra believes that the states have “clear legal standing” and that Trump “knows he’s going to lose.” So, why do it?

It’s difficult to understand Trump’s moves amid his faltering attempts at governing the country. He has been an unapologetic failure since the inception of his presidency. It’s obvious that he’s pandering to his base (or what’s left of it these days), but just how stupid does he really think they are? That wall is not going to be built. Perhaps he thinks he can just give them another dog and pony show and they’ll be happy. In the meantime, the rest of us are suffering.

He cost the American people well in excess of the $5.7 billion he initially requested when he shut down our government for 35 days, causing damage to many American families. He will expend additional funds defending the already-filed and coming lawsuits against his fake emergency, which will ultimately be stricken down by his own words: “I didn’t need to do this. But I’d rather do it much faster.”

Trump has no clue about running our government, or much of anything else for that matter, as evidenced by his multiple bankruptcies. And to what end? It has been shown time and again that the bulk of drugs in this country do not come across the Mexican border. Governor Gavin Newsom summed it up best when he referred to the wall as a “vanity project” and a “monument to stupidity” and further characterizes Trump’s move as “a blatant political ploy that he engineered after being embarrassed by House Speaker Pelosi.”

Rather than learning to do the job for which he was not legitimately elected to begin with, Donald Trump thrives on being a bully. The American people will not be bullied by him. We will stand together and see that he is out of office as soon as humanly possible while we pray that he doesn’t do so much damage that it can’t be undone.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: Something big must be about to blow for Donald Trump

  •
  •
  •
  •

“President” Donald “Dictator Donnie” Trump must be in trouble again. Something big must be about to blow. How do we know this? His tweets, lashing out at the media. On Sunday, he once again labeled the media the “enemy of the people,” emphasizing the attribution in all caps: “THE RIGGED AND CORRUPT MEDIA IS THE ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE!”

This followed his attacks on Saturday Night Live, calling for retribution for daring to make fun of Corruptus Maximus: “Nothing funny about tired Saturday Night Live on Fake News NBC! Question is, how do the Networks get away with these total Republican hit jobs without retribution? Likewise for many other shows? Very unfair and should be looked into. This is the real Collusion!”

Notwithstanding that the statement on its face is absurd, that a political satire program can somehow be a form of collusion (which Trump and his legal team repeatedly state when it comes to him is not a thing), the tweets are dangerous. They are the ramblings and wishes of a dictator, someone who is not open to criticism or questioning, sort of the treatment his idols Putin and Kim and MBS get from their home media outlets.

At one point in our nation’s history, not long after we established our new nation under the United States Constitution, Congress passed laws known as the Alien and Sedition Acts. Passed in 1798, the laws focused on certain behaviors by immigrants. The alien parts of the laws remain in effect today, more than 200 years later. However, the sedition acts, which prohibited public opposition to the government, including parody and criticism, and imposed liability against those who “write, print, utter, or publish . . . any false, scandalous and malicious writing” against the government, expired in the early 1800s. Over the decades, the laws have changed, and we are permitted to criticize the President and others. (If that were not permissible, the 24/7 channels including CNN, Fox, and MSNBC, would quickly be out of business.)

The real enemy of the people, the one who is most dangerous to our nation and who has poisoned his base against the media, against federal law enforcement, against all our cherished institutions and bedrocks, is “Dictator Donnie.” His language is dangerous, and we must all call him out for the danger it is.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: Roger Stone was always going to go out like this

  •
  •
  •
  •

Roger Stone learned on Friday that Robert Mueller has the evidence to easily send him to prison for the rest of his life. Today, in what is probably not a coincidence, Stone made an Instagram post threatening the physical well being of the judge in his case. There’s a strong chance this stunt will get his bail revoked, and if this one doesn’t, his next out of control stunt will. You see, Stone was always going to go out like this.

I have some first hand experience with the guy, thanks to the fact that I’ve been covering his role in the Trump-Russia scandal from the start. Back when Roger Stone still had a Twitter account, he repeatedly used it to call me “fake news.” Okay, fine. This was all a game to him. Then he made vicious sexist threats against multiple female pundits, and got himself banned from Twitter entirely, because he didn’t understand that this wasn’t a game.

That’s when Roger Stone shifted his focus to Instagram, because it was all he had left. At one point he posted a cartoon image that appeared to depict him preparing to murder Robert Mueller. When I wrote about it, he called me a “piece of human excrement” in response.

Again, Roger Stone can hurl whatever insults he wants at me. But the guy doesn’t understand where the line is. It’s why no one is surprised that he conspired with Russian government hackers and sloppily left behind an evidence trail, or that he’s threatening violence against the judge now that he’s learned he’s going down anyway. Stone still thinks this is all a game – and he’s losing everything.
