1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (197 sites): Palmer Report: Donald Trump is taking water from all sides

  •

  •
  •

Donald Trump is getting it from all sides right about now. I can honestly say that I couldn’t wish anything better for him. With Michael Cohen’s testimony and the crimes it has uncovered distracting him, Trump hasn’t even mentioned his “national emergency.” Some Republican Senators, however, are trying to remind him that it’s still hanging out there – and more importantly they’re not planning to support him.

The most vocal of these Republicans is Lamar Alexander. Last week, he publicly called out Donald Trump: “Withdraw your national emergency declaration at the border or face a potential rebellion from the GOP.” While Alexander did not indicate whether he will be that elusive fourth vote needed from the Republican Senators, he is clear that he neither agrees with nor appreciates Trump’s “national emergency” declaration.

According to Politico, Lamar is one of 10 Republicans who might well vote against the declaration. When reporters asked Alexander how the GOP can avoid an all-out battle with Trump, an unnamed senator stated succinctly, “He can change his mind.” Even “Lyin’ Ted Cruz,” as Trump called him during the campaign, sounds reluctant to allow the national emergency declaration to proceed: “I have long believed and advocated that every president, Republican and Democrat, should act consistent with the Constitution and federal law.” As much as I hate to agree with Cruz on anything, I do in this case.

Alexander suggests an alternative to Trump: take $1.37 from the Homeland Security Appropriations Bill, $601 million from the Treasury Forfeiture fund, and $3.7 billion from the Department of Defense counter drug enforcement fund. That’s all well and good, but the vast majority of Americans don’t want a wall – period. If these funds are truly available, they should be put to better use, such as infrastructure, updated border security, real tax relief for the middle class, and I could go on.

I’m sorry, but a border wall is the least of our problems. Interestingly, Alexander is not running for reelection, so he is very free to say how he feels. The problem will be getting enough others to go along with his plan. Rand Paul says he’s voting against Trump, so that will take the resolution to Trump’s desk, where he will veto it. Then, the real Republicans who truly want to support their constituents and this country should step up and override his veto. I doubt very seriously that they have the balls to do that.

It still puzzles me why so many of them continue to support Donald Trump, including those who support him with their silence. But Alexander makes the most valid point: if this declaration goes through, what’s to stop a Democratic president from doing the same thing on a different issue? Our Constitution was designed with checks and balances to prevent this type of thing. No man – including one who thinks he’s the best thing since sliced bread–has the right or power to undo what is written. They all need to stand up for our Constitution and for us.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (197 sites): Palmer Report: Donald Trump is falling to pieces in real time

  •

  •

“President” Donald Trump met with North Korean President Kim Jong-un in Vietnam last week, and the summit broke up suddenly and quickly. Trump is now making an effort to discredit Michael Cohen, as well as to deflect blame from himself for not being able to effectively have any art to his deal making.

On Sunday evening, Trump took once again to Twitter, and tweeted: “For the Democrats to interview in open hearings a convicted liar & fraudster, at the same time as the very important Nuclear Summit with North Korea, is perhaps a new low in American politics and may have contributed to the “walk.” Never done when a president is overseas. Shame!”

Trump is right on one thing, as many have pointed out on Twitter – this has never done when a president is overseas, but we have never had a sitting president accused of crimes and obstruction that involved his personal lawyer who also happened to be the Deputy Vice Chair of his party’s finance committee. His tweet is preposterous. Trump has no basis to suggest that somehow the hearings impacted the ability to get a deal done.

First, number one of deal making is, until you have a signed deal or agreement, you don’t announce that a big deal signing ceremony will be held. It deleverages your position and enables the other side to seek additional concessions and benefits. Second, the likelihood of reaching an agreement on denuclearization, when the two countries did not have an agreement as to what that term means, was little to none.

Trump in his mind can do no wrong, and can never be on the bad end of a transaction or interaction. But like with much of his seventy-plus years on this earth, he did not achieve what he bragged he could. Now, he wants to blame hearings in the United States, which had absolutely zero to do with the failure to reach a deal. Like most in the Trump repertoire, it another example of a non sequitur.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (197 sites): Palmer Report: Ted Lieu lays out the details of “massive” new House Judiciary Committee investigation into Donald Trump

  •
  •
  •
  •

There’s a reason the House Judiciary Committee is sometimes informally called the House Impeachment Committee: it’s where the impeachment process begins. On Sunday morning, Chairman Jerry Nadler announced that the committee is sending document requests to more than sixty Trump-related people and entities. By Sunday afternoon, we learned that the list included four of Donald Trump’s family members. Now Ted Lieu, who also sits on the committee, is offering additional insight into the probe. Ted Lieu’s statement reads:

The House Judiciary Committee is starting a massive investigation into whether Donald Trump and his family and associates committed crimes or engaged in unethical misconduct. We cannot avert our eyes to the evidence plainly before us that crimes and other misconduct may have been committed by Trump and those within his orbit.

“Unlike the narrow scope of the Special Counsel’s investigation–whether there is enough evidence to charge a person with a crime related to Russian interference–the Judiciary Committee’s oversight mission is far more broad. We want to know if Executive Branch officials, including the President, committed any crimes or engaged in any unethical misconduct.

“We will hold hearings, interview witnesses, analyze documents and build a record. Our investigation will either exonerate Trump and those around him, or it won’t. We will then have a conversation with the American people on how to proceed after we conclude our investigation. I want to commend Chairman Jerry Nadler for his strong and steady leadership, and look forward to working with him on this critical investigation.

So what does this really tell us? Well, Congressman Lieu’s use of the word “massive” is a pretty good clue as to the sheer size and scope of the investigation. But here’s the key sentence: “We will then have a conversation with the American people on how to proceed after we conclude our investigation.” It’s not too difficult to figure out that the “conversation” will be about impeachment, indictment, ouster, and whatever else fits the bill.

It’s fair to say that the impeachment process against Donald Trump has now begun, even if no one involved is officially calling it that. Again, the House Judiciary Committee is where the impeachment process begins. They’re not launching this “massive” investigation out of mere curiosity. We all know it’s going to turn up a metric ton of incriminating evidence, and we know the impeachment/ouster hammer is coming. When Robert Mueller weighs in, he’ll just be piling on.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (197 sites): Palmer Report: The mysterious new bombshell from the closed-door Michael Cohen hearings

  •
  •
  •
  •

The day after the stunning public Michael Cohen hearing with the House Oversight Committee took place, he appeared again in a closed-door session with the House Intelligence Committee. In that hearing, Cohen revealed something mysterious that had the Congressmen at the “edge of our seats.” It was something that Cohen originally did not seem to think was a big deal, but ended up being very important. The Washington Post reported it could be that Trump dangled a pardon in front of Michael Cohen in order to keep him on his side after his office was raided.

The Post could be right, and if they are, that would mean that Donald Trump committed felony obstruction of justice. However, before the Post reported pardon-dangling as the mysterious new bombshell that came out of the closed-door hearing, I had thought of and dismissed this idea because both Cohen’s lawyer Lanny Davis, and Eric Swalwell reported on MSNBC that whatever this revelation was, it was something Cohen had not originally reported because he did not realize it was a big deal.

As a lawyer who has been talking with the SDNY and Mueller’s team for hundreds of hours, Cohen would know that the president dangling a pardon in front of him would be very significant. If he did not realize it based on his own training as a lawyer, then surely he would understand after the SDNY and Mueller’s team asked him about it, and questioned him about every aspect of the last conversation he had with Trump, and the pardon offer, which they undeniably have done.

Another reason the description of the mysterious new bombshell doesn’t completely fit with the dangling of a pardon is that Michael Cohen is reportedly coming back to meet with the congressional committee again on Monday, because he thinks he can find and deliver proof of this new revelation. What proof would Cohen have of this phone conversation? Phone records? Did he record the conversation? If there is a recording, then it would have been turned over to or seized by authorities, which means this would definitely have come up before, and Cohen would know it was significant. While it is possible that the big new information Cohen provided Congress was that Trump offered him a pardon, it just doesn’t fit well with the description given by Lanny Davis and Congressman Eric Swalwell.

Something I read on Palmer Report quite some time ago does fit: Michael Cohen was asked in the public hearing if he had ever been to Prague and he answered, no. Behind closed doors, it would make sense for a Congressman to ask again, and to explain to him what information they have that suggests he was there. Perhaps the Congressman told Cohen that intelligence had picked up signals from a phone registered to him near Prague, and perhaps a congressman asked Cohen if anyone else could have been in possession of a phone registered to him.

As Palmer Report pointed months ago, Cohen had so many phones seized from his office, it makes sense that some of them may have been purchased by Cohen as “burner” phones for Trump and his family. This line of questioning and conversation could have led Cohen to put pieces together that he had not thought of before, i.e., that someone from the Trump family could have traveled to Prague with a phone that was registered to him. While Mueller may already know who went to Prague and when, if Cohen did not know anything about Prague, Mueller would not have shared what he knows with Cohen. It just doesn’t work that way. So, Cohen may not have put the pieces together until Friday in the closed-door session.

While we don’t know if this is the new bombshell, it fits what we know about this mysterious new discovery. It is very possible that Michael Cohen would not have understood the significance of one of a Team Trump member taking a burner phone, and he might not have known that a signal from a phone registered to him was picked up in Prague.

Additionally, Michael Cohen may have a lot of credit card and financial statements and records in his “boxes” of materials that could relate to any travel expenses incurred by the Trump Organization, and he could have kept records of who had the phones registered to him. Either way, someone is going to be facing prison time for this new bombshell revelation.

US president says the timing of the Cohen hearing, while he was at the talks in Vietnam, was ‘a new low’ in politics

US president Donald Trump has blamed that the Democrats’ decision to interview his longtime fixer, lawyer Michael Cohen, on the same day as a meeting with Kim Jong-un for the fact that the North Korea summit ended with no deal.

“For the Democrats to interview in open hearings a convicted liar & fraudster, at the same time as the very important Nuclear Summit with North Korea, is perhaps a new low in American politics and may have contributed to the ‘walk.’” Trump said on Twitter, referring to his decision to walk away from what he previously said was a bad deal with Kim. “Never done when a president is overseas. Shame!”

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (197 sites): Donald Trump | The Guardian: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez: can the new star of the US left help beat Trump?

  •

All eyes are on Ocasio-Cortez, but what does her brand of politics actually mean for the Democrats as they head into the presidential elections next year? The Guardian’s Lauren Gambino reports from Washington. And Rupert Jones discusses the dangers of the rising number of windowless microflats

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is the youngest US congresswoman ever and has quickly become a household name. Renowned for bold challenges in Congress and radical policies such as her “Green New Deal” focusing on climate change, Ocasio-Cortez is not afraid of being heard – or of the backlash that might bring.

There is a lot of excitement around her but, as Democrats start gearing up for the 2020 presidential elections, some are concerned about her brand of politics. She has become a clear target for the far right in America, and for anyone seeking to portray the Democrats as radicals, or even communists.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (197 sites): Palmer Report: Donald Trump’s day from hell

  •
  •
  •
  •

“I am an innocent man…” Donald Trump tweeted these words earlier today. This is professional-grade whining as only Trump can whine. But now with an overriding edge of Defcon-1 panic. Is this a seismic shift? Well, let’s see. Adam Schiff, who is one of the chillest members of Congress to ever grace its halls, is now saying there is definite evidence of Trump/Russia collusion. The U.S. House is launching a probe into possible obstruction by Trump, and Senate Intel Committee ranking member Mark Warner is all out saying they have found, “enormous amounts of evidence” of potential collusion with the Trump campaign and Russia.

Let’s see. There’s also the fact that daughter-wife Ivanka has been named by Cohen as a person who should give testimony to Congress, Jared Kushner is fighting a wave of outrage after he was anointed with a Top Secret clearance, and finally there’s Donald Trump Jr doing what he usually does. Let’s just say in the words of a thug, it don’t look good.

And speaking of thugs, we now top off the week with of all things, Matthew Calamari. From lowlife bodyguard to glamorous Chief Operating Officer for the Trump Organization, Mr. Calamari embodies the American Dream of climbing the corporate ladder. And he did it all with the promise to kill for Trump, and a Ron Jeremy porn ‘stache. He’ll probably be speaking to the House Oversight Committee too, and that’s saying a lot given how he chokes in public speaking, and has a marked tendency to lose his train of thought.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has pegged him as a witness to Donald Trump inflating assets in order to get bank loans. If he gets called in, it will be painful to watch. He stammers. He chokes. But it will be absolutely stache-tastic. (Take all the time you need, Matty. We’ll wait. In fact, we can’t wait to wait!) Oh, and did you know Matthew Calamari budded off and produced a Matthew Calamari, Jr.? He’s now the Corporate Director of Security for the Trump Organization. I’d like to hear him stammer under oath too.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (197 sites): Palmer Report: Donald Trump Jr goes completely off the deep end after House Judiciary Committee formally targets him

  •
  •
  •
  •

In the several hours since we learned that the House Judiciary Committee has included all three of Donald Trump’s oldest kids in tomorrow’s massive formal document request, each of the kids has taken a different approach. Ivanka Trump hasn’t tweeted anything. Neither has Eric Trump, though we suspect he’s busy sticking his finger in an electric socket. Then there’s the curious case of Donald Trump Jr.

Donald Trump Jr seems to think that all of the criminal investigations into him and his family are rather humorous. His Twitter feed is a cross between completely witless punchlines and tinfoil hat conspiracy theories. So how is Junior doing, now that he’s learned he’s among those being formally targeted by Congress?

Donald Trump Jr launched juvenile zingers at Adam Schiff and a reporter, the latest evidence that he thinks he can truly make investigators go away by tweeting dumb things about them. But then came Junior’s weirdest moment of all. The official Meet The Press account made an unfortunate (and quickly deleted) error, referring to its own host Chuck Todd as the rather offensive “Cuck Todd.” Junior promptly retweeted this, adding “At least they finally got something right.”

So that’s right, Donald Trump Jr just said that Chuck Todd is a “cuck.” That’s how seriously this jackass is taking the mounting criminal case against him. Junior increasingly comes across like a guy who’s either high on laughing gas, or has simply cracked under the pressure and taken on a Joker-like persona. The trouble: he’s too stupid too pull it off.
