Palmer Report: This is why Donald Trump and his criminal henchmen must be made to pay a hefty price

One of the biggest headlines of the day today is the FBI bust of dozens of wealthy parents who bribed school officials, SAT administrators and coaches to get their children into elite schools. My first reaction to the pictures of soccer moms in the headlines of all the major news outlets was, I wonder if the overzealous moms qualify for the “otherwise blameless life” discount.

Here’s the problem with that reaction. Three years ago this scandal would have been much bigger news than it is today, and my first reaction would have been anger. Our country and our economy were founded on the idea of individual mobility and opportunity. At its best our country operates as a meritocracy: people are able to rise or fall based on their level of ability, merit, determination and effort. Equal opportunity is our ideal. We have fallen dreadfully short of this goal.

Wealth conveys societal opportunity that’s not available to those without it, and over the last twenty years there has been a dramatic decrease in the ability of those not born into wealth to obtain it. Opportunities for social mobility are getting more scarce. Our colleges and universities are supposed to be a gateway for opportunity. The system for entry into these institutions is supposed to be merit based.

The idea that the wealthy can illegally purchase a coveted slot into the best universities for their otherwise unqualified child, gives another precious advantage to an already advantaged child, and takes that opportunity away from a gifted child more intellectually equipped to make use of a fine education.

This should be a big deal, but let’s face it. When the President’s campaign manager was secretly working as an agent of the Ukraine and Russia, when he laundered money, when he evaded paying taxes on his earnings from that secret agency, and he lied to FBI agents, and then he gets off with only four years in prison, and is referred to by a judge as, “otherwise blameless,” it’s hard to get worked up over a mom cheating to get her child into a university.

And, that is why Donald Trump and his criminal conspirators have to be stopped and they have to pay serious consequences, because if selling out your country and abusing public trust is not a really big deal, then nothing else is.

Palmer Report: Tucker Carlson’s suspicious Fox News “vacation”

  • 3
  •
  •
  •

By now you’ve surely heard the remarks that Fox News host Tucker Carlson made in newly unearthed radio appearances from years ago. There’s the one where he appeared to endorse child rape. Then there’s the one where he used the worst of gender slurs and homophobic slurs. The question was whether mainstream Americans could convince enough of Carlson’s advertisers to bail, such that Fox would conclude he was no longer profitable to keep on the air.

We know this because it’s the calculus that was used when other Fox News hosts got into scandalous trouble. Laura Ingraham narrowly survived the loss of several advertisers, while Bill O’Reilly didn’t survive that math. Even as we wait for that process to play out with Tucker Carlson, he’s suddenly talking about “vacation.”

On Fox News tonight, Sean Hannity claimed that Tucker Carlson was supposed to be on vacation this week, and that Carlson only showed up to work this week in order to fight back against the haters. Hannity made it sound like Carlson was heading out on vacation tomorrow, but now Fox News is confirming that Carlson will be on the air all week. Wait, so where did his “vacation” go? Are we really supposed to believe Hannity’s story?

Here’s the thing. Back when Laura Ingraham attacked the Parkland school shooting survivors and started losing advertisers by the bucketload, she suddenly went on a supposed pre-planned “vacation” as well. Shortly after Megyn Kelly had her feud with Donald Trump, she suddenly went on “vacation.” And of course O’Reilly went on “vacation” just before he got fired. Funny how these Fox people are always going on vacation just as their scandals are exploding. We don’t know if Tucker Carlson is going on vacation or not, but the fact that he was supposedly supposed to be on vacation this week is, well, convenient.

Palmer Report: Airplanes are falling out of the sky, and it may actually be Donald Trump’s fault

  • 3

  •

Donald Trump’s negligence, incompetence, and criminal corruption are responsible for so many things that go wrong these days, it’s tempting to just assume that every new scandal or problem is going to trace back to him. That’s overly presumptive without evidence, of course. But when it comes to this new crisis where a particular model of Boeing aircraft keeps crashing, there is now solid evidence that this is indeed at least partly Trump’s fault.

To be clear, the problem originated with Boeing itself. The company essentially admitted as much when it promised to develop and release a software update to compensate for the apparent hardware defect that’s been causing the 737 MAX 8 to abruptly fall out of the sky and crash, for lack of a better way of putting it. But this evening Rachel Maddow reported on MSNBC that Boeing has been working on this software update for months, and that the work actually stopped for five weeks during Trump’s government shutdown.

To be clear, the first crash happened in October 2018, long before the shutdown. But there’s real reason to believe that this week’s second crash might have been prevented if the software patch hadn’t been delayed by five weeks. When you throw in the fact that the United States has had no FAA Administrator for more than a year because Trump refused to appoint one after Congress wouldn’t allow him to install his own personal pilot in the position, the whole thing gets uglier.

Yes, it’s entirely possible that this second crash would have happened even if the President of the United States weren’t a negligent criminal. But the five week delay on the software patch is indeed Donald Trump’s fault. Considering that the Trump regime still has yet to ground the Boeing 737 MAX 8, even as most other nations have, and that Trump is buddies with the CEO of Boeing, the whole thing is a nightmare.
