“Don Jr. and Jared Really Dislike Each Other”: In the Trump Campaign, It’s Son Versus Son-in-Law

After a 2020 campaign rollout that included weak polls and a pair of disastrous network interviews, Donald Trump needed some good news. He got some Tuesday when his campaign and the Republican National Committee announced they had raised $105 million in the second quarter, a number that far surpassed where Barack Obama and the DNC were at this point in Obama’s reelection bid. The massive fund-raising haul, a former West Wing official told me, “showed money isn’t going to be a problem.”

What is a problem for the campaign, though, is the escalating cold war between Jared Kushner and Donald Trump Jr. for control of the reelection, five sources close to the White House told me in recent days. Brad Parscale is the nominal campaign manager—but Jared and Don Jr., who both have good relationships with Parscale, are jockeying to be the ultimate decision makers. “Jared wants to take control of the campaign,” a person close to Don Jr. told me. “It’s about power,” the former West Wing official said. One place the fight is playing out is over fund-raising. According to sources, Kushner has been seeking to marginalize Don Jr.’s close friend Tommy Hicks Jr., who serves as co-chairman of the RNC. According to a source, Jared has told RNC Chairwoman Ronna Romney McDaniel not to be in touch with Hicks.

“None of this is true,” Ronna McDaniel replied in an email. “The president’s family, the campaign and RNC couldn’t be working any better together. This is a total team effort to re-elect the president and Tommy is an integral part of it.” Donald Trump Jr. and the White House did not respond to requests for comment by the time this article was published.

The tensions between Don Jr. and Kushner amplified beneath the glare of the Mueller investigation. “Don Jr. and Jared really dislike each other,” a Republican close to the White House told me. According to the source, Don Jr. has told people he suspected Kushner was behind the initial leak of Don Jr.’s infamous Trump Tower meeting with Russians to get dirt on Hillary Clinton. “Don was telling people Jared leaked it to hurt him. No one could figure out how it leaked. It was a closely guarded secret.” The source said Kushner has also told foreign dignitaries to steer clear of Don Jr. “Jared has told foreign people not to work through Don Jr. And Jared has said it’s on orders from the president,” the source said.

Paranoia about Kushner has set in among Don Jr.’s allies. According to one person close to Don Jr., his advisers were alarmed by Don Jr.’s now-deleted tweet questioning Senator Kamala Harris’s race. They worried Kushner would push the scandal to damage Don Jr. “We need to clean this up,” one adviser emailed another shortly after Don Jr. sent the tweet, according to the person, who was briefed on the exchange. “Don doesn’t want to give Jared any excuses to delegitimize him,” the person told me.

German prosecutors intensify Deutsche Bank client investigation: source

.

FRANKFURT (Reuters) – German prosecutors are escalating a money laundering inquiry involving Deutsche Bank (DBKGn.DE), including planned raids on wealthy former clients, a person with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters.

FILE PHOTO: Police vehicles are parked in front of Deutsche Bank headquarters as roughly 170 criminal police officers, prosecutors and tax inspectors searched Deutsche Bank offices in and around Frankfurt, Germany, November 29, 2018, on money laundering allegations, the public prosecutor said in a statement. REUTERS/Kai Pfaffenbach/File Photo

Frankfurt’s state prosecutors will in the coming months search the homes of people who it suspects of using a company formerly owned by Germany’s biggest bank for tax evasion and money laundering, the person said.

The intensified scrutiny of Deutsche Bank, which has said it has no indication of any misconduct, comes at a delicate time as the Frankfurt-based bank seeks to revamp its struggling business and repair a reputation ravaged by a series of scandals.

Deutsche Bank declined to comment on the investigation but referred to earlier comments by a senior official in which he defended its record, saying that it has invested in fighting money laundering and that it is cooperating with investigators.

Police searched the homes of eight people in Germany as part of the investigation in May, after a two-day search of Deutsche Bank’s headquarters by 170 police and investigators in November.

That high-profile raid tainted it for months, hitting its share price as well shaking confidence in the bank among government officials and its customers.

During the raid, police obtained the names of 900 clients suspected of using its Regula subsidiary to avoid taxes, the person said.

Prosecutors said at the time that they suspected Deutsche Bank had helped clients shift criminal money, identifying more than 300 million euros ($339 million) that had flowed to a British Virgin Islands registered vehicle in 2016.

The prosecutors also said they were investigating two members of Deutsche Bank staff.

Deutsche Bank executive Karl von Rohr said in February that it had acted to ensure the “tax honesty” of clients, and had no indication of any misconduct by the bank or staff.

Regula was highlighted in data leaks including the Panama Papers, which were uncovered by a consortium of journalists.

The regional government in the German state of Hesse and German federal police bought this data, which includes almost 290,000 documents relating to 1,500 offshore firms, in 2017. It is now in the hands of Frankfurt public prosecutors.

‘FLAGRANT OFFENDER’

Although Deutsche Bank sold Regula in early 2018 to a Bermuda-based bank, the evolving investigation puts it under further pressure following years of scrutiny and billions of dollars in fines for schemes, including so-called mirror trades.

Deutsche has agreed to pay more than $600 million in fines to the New York and British authorities for that scheme, one of its most recent scandals, that regulators said allowed Russian clients to covertly move money abroad.

That prompted lawmakers in the United States to send the bank a questionnaire asking about its money laundering controls.

“Deutsche Bank has been a flagrant offender of our money laundering laws,” U.S. Democratic Senator Chris Van Hollen told Reuters. “They are in a league of their own. So we want to look at it for that reason.”

Von Rohr said in a speech that Deutsche Bank had improved controls, tripling staff who fight money laundering and financial crime since 2015 and was maintaining close contact with regulators.

U.S. lawmakers have also asked questions about the bank’s relationship with Donald Trump, but Deutsche’s response has been held up by a legal challenge by the U.S. president, in which he accused House leaders of harassment.

In addition, the U.S. lawmakers are also seeking information about Deutsche Bank’s links to prominent Russians as well as its money laundering controls, one person with direct knowledge of the matter said.

The German bank has also come under pressure in a separate money laundering scandal involving Danske Bank (DANSKE.CO), prompting European lawmakers to call for it to reappear before the European Parliament over its money laundering controls.

Ana Gomes, a Portuguese EU parliamentarian, and Sven Giegold, a German EU lawmaker, said they were disappointed by an earlier appearance in parliament by Deutsche Bank.

“They did not answer in a way that would suggest they were reforming,” Gomes said.

from Augusta Free Press.

Don BeyerRep. Don Beyer today sent an oversight letter to Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross seeking details about communications and at least one meeting between Ross and white nationalist and Holocaust denier Charles C. Johnson.

The meeting was first revealed in emails, enclosed in Beyer’s letter and copied below, which were obtained by Democracy Forward via a Freedom of Information Act request.

Beyer wrote:

“I write seeking details on meeting(s) you held last year with Charles C. Johnson. Johnson, a white nationalist,  conspiracy theorist,  fake news purveyor,  and Holocaust denier,  exchanged emails with you requesting two separate meetings in June and October of 2018. … the meeting reportedly took place and you exchanged details about it with him from your personal email account.  I believe you owe the American people and their Representatives an explanation about this meeting, given the position of public trust which you hold.

“Johnson addressed requests to both your personal and official email accounts for meetings which Commerce Department staff seemed to regard as having a bearing on official business. …Conducting official business of this kind via personal email would be inappropriate and potentially illegal, as you are doubtless aware.

“Given the lack of clarity around these meetings, I ask that you respond with answers to the following questions:

1. How many times have you met with Charles C. Johnson, whether in your official capacity as Secretary of Commerce, or informally, since you became Secretary?

2. Where have these meetings taken place, and when?

3. Who participated in the June 25, 2018 meeting between Charles C. Johnson and yourself? What topics did you discuss, and what subsequent dialogue or policy changes resulted from the meeting(s)?

4. Please provide any emails sent from your personal account related to official business which you exchanged with Charles C. Johnson.

5. What came of Charles C. Johnson’s October 2018 request to discuss a “national security matter” with you? Why did he direct such a request to the Commerce Department?

Rep. Beyer is the sponsor in the House of the bipartisan NO HATE Act, legislation to strengthen the response by local, state, and federal law enforcement to the rising incidence of hate crimes.

IRAN
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani today issued a warning to Europe that Tehran will “take the next step” in increasing its uranium enrichment by Sunday. “If you want to express regret and issue a statement, you can do it now,” Rouhani said in comments carried by the state broadcaster, increasing pressure on European powers to salvage the 2015 nuclear deal that the U.S. withdrew from last year, AP reports.
Rouhani’s comments came after Iran breached the 300 kilogram (660 pound) limit for low-enriched uranium allowed under the deal Monday. That development did not put Iran significantly closer to holding enough high-enriched uranium to produce a nuclear weapon, whereas increasing uranium enrichment levels could, Loveday Morris reports at the Washington Post.
