I knew with 100% certainty at 8:54am on November 4th that Joe Biden had won the 2020 presidential election. The TV networks took another four days to finally call it. As of tonight I’m not yet 100% sure that the Democrats have won both Georgia senate seats – but we’re amazingly close.
Most of the remaining uncounted votes in Georgia tonight are in heavily Democratic-leaning counties. That means Raphael Warnock, who is already ahead by about 35,000 votes, is basically a lock to win. It also means that Jon Ossoff, who is currently behind by just about 1,200 votes, is overwhelmingly likely to pull ahead and also win.
If these results hold up – and I’m almost sure they will – it’ll mean the Democrats will take control of the Senate. It’ll make Chuck Schumer the new Senate Majority Leader. And it’ll relegate Mitch McConnell to the powerless position of Senate Minority Leader. McConnell will not be able to use that position to hold anything over us. He’ll just be another whining member of the minority, who loses every vote because that’s how math works.
For what it’s worth, Decision Desk HQ has called the win for Warnock, while Cook Political Report has called the win for both Warnock and Ossoff. The New York Times is now giving Warnock and Ossoff each a greater than 95% chance of winning. There is no evidence whatsoever to suggest that Perdue and Loeffler have any chance of pulling it out.
So while I’m not 100% certain yet that we’ve won these races, I’m about as certain as I can be without being certain. If I’m proven correct, it’ll mean that the Democrats will now control the Presidency, the House, and the Senate for the next two years, meaning President Biden can now plow full speed ahead with his agenda. And it means we’ll have dethroned Trump and McConnell from their perches within a span of two months.
